My female cav does it pretty often too. We just give her a rub under the chin and tell her to have a drink too. She recovers pretty quickly.

So glad to know its not just us! Sorry about the back seat of your car though!

 It just pours out! Had to do the sneaky sand cover up.....had already picked up two separate poos from Stella and had to drag my unfit bum back to the carpark each time to put them in the bin!

I took the dogs to the beach today for about an hour. Stella pretty much goes off and does a bit of exploring but Cooper is mad for chasing the ball into the water with my friends cattle dog. We were there for about an hour. As we were leaving, the most amazing amount of water came out of coopers bottom....it was like a tap....my friend said her cattle dog gets 'the squirts' too and its from swallowing too much sea water. Does anyone know if there are any long term affects of the dog doing this? Both dogs are wormed and vaccinated. It just happens after being at the beach for a while. I could not believe how much came out....pretty clear liquid, slight yellowish but overall clear.

How Long Do You Leave Uneaten Dry Food Out?
cavmad replied to macka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dogs eat as soon as I put their food down. If they don't eat within about 10 minutes then I know there is something really wrong. I never ever leave food down as they are both total pigs and would glutton themselves all day long if they could. They have fought over biscuits before so I also wouldnt leave food down for that reason. I dont think dogs need to have food left out for them. They should eat when you feed them and thats it. Its good to have a routine. JMO. -
Just be aware that not all dogs can tolerate cow's milk, it will give some dogs diarrhoea. Most dogs handle lactose free milk better than ordinary milk. Have you thought of trying satin balls? You could substitute cooked potato or sweet potato for the cereal. There are recipes somewhere on this forum, just do a search. Thanks Miranda. I know about the milk thing and dont give them milk but might try the lactose free. I've never heard of satin balls! Will look into it. I'm a bit hesitant to increase the actual size of their meals as they always seem really full after they have eaten, they walk like they are both full and they sometimes make a bit of a regurgitation sound (although they never regurg)....just need to add more fat I think!

O.k so they are getting chicken necks and brisket bone and mince from time to time (which I forgot to add earlier). What other kinds of meat could I give him? I will try the raw chicken mince, he loves anything chicken. He is very lean, not skinny, no ribs showing or anything, just looks lean. I will try and post a pic later. Thanks guys.

Sorry to hear this. The poor driver and carer! RIP Harvey.

I pretty much feed my dogs vegetables, fruit, the odd egg and dollop of yoghurt here and there and brisket bones and chicken necks. I think they eat pretty healthy and due to the fact that they both have a wonky leg each, I am conscious of keeping their weight down. However, I think Cooper might be a little underweight though. He has always been quite a lean dog, very active when we go to the beach and walking but lately he seems to be thinning down a bit too much. What foods can I give him that would add a litlle bit of weight without filling him up on crap? I don't have scales but I might take him up to the vet to weigh him this afternoon. My OH came home from being away for a week and the first thing he noticed was how skinny he has got.

Thanks so much, that would be great!

I want to make my own dog bikkies. I think there was a thread on it a while ago. Anyone remember it? I don't feed BARF but I do only feed raw vegies, fresh fruit, meat and bones, occassionally an egg and some yoghurt so I want to stick to natural ingredients as much as possible. Anyone have any good recipes, keeping in mind that my Stella stacks on weight very very easily whereas Cooper is very muscly and lean. Thanks!

Sugar, I give my two a lamb shank probably every two weeks, usually on the weekend. Other than that they get brisket bones and chicken necks....that crunching makes my skin crawl though! I really didn't know that raw lamb shanks could splinter though. Sounds like you have good reason not to give them Haven...and you have big dogs. Certainly makes me think twice. I suppose its all about trial and error. I gave a pigs ear and nearly had a heart attack when I had to pry a big gluey mess out from the roof of Stellas mouth. Never again.

 cavs feet should be untouched but I always trim off excess hair underneath. I always check with the client whether they want the entire foot trimmed or not, and most of the time they want it all trimmed back, but shaved I know I know!!!! Apparently a lot of owners on the coast like their cavs shaved all over due to the heat etc. My husband would not stop going on about it for weeks and everytime I looked at them I wanted to cry. It was my fault though, I wasnt specific enough. Each time they go now, I leave a detailed list; belly and bottom short, ears tidied, tail tidied and feet tidied but NOT cut back. I am really anal. I want my cavs to look like cavs. Thankfully the lady listened to everything I said and does an awesome job. I really cannot tell you how devastated I was when they came back that first time though!

I would recommend that if you are going to get into the habit of cutting off the hair on their feet then do it from a young age. Some DOLers on here have me the advice and it was some of the best advice I have had. I tell both of my dogs to sit and roll over. When they are on their backs I just let them lay there and I trim off any skanky bits although I much much much prefer them with hair all over their feet. Once they came back from a groomer with totally shaved feet and I thought my life was over *L* I really love the cavvie look so when I send them to get groomed its really just for a tidy up rather than to have any feathering removed. I think you could use any smallish pair of scissors really. It doesn't matter too much, just don't cut too close to their pads.

I took some photos for a newspaper and emailed them through my hotmail account to the newspaper. I thought I used the highest resolution on my camera but they editor has emailed me back saying I need to email them in a higher resolution. Can I change the photo to a higher resolution or do I have to email them through a different email account. Does anyone know if hotmail changes the resolution of photos when they are emailed?

Yes, I am a teacher at the school. Every child attending the carnival has had a parental consent signed to say that photos will be taken of their child at numerous school sporting and other events throughout the year. Just thought Id better check, not everybody is aware of it. As for tips, Im not really going to be much help. Mine is a Nikon so not sure what functions are available on canon cameras. Thanks anyway. Yeah, the whole photo thing is very touchy. Thankfully we have this long form that all of the parents have to complete at the beginning of the year which has a section in it about their kids having their photo taken and it being used by the school. I just grabbed the swimming kids list and did a cross check and all had signed it...thank god. I can understand it from a parents point of view though, if they don't want their childs photo taken that's totally their right.

Thanks Ripley. I have used the TV button before and have had a go at experimenting with it this evening. (got some good practice shots of water splashing in the sink). I think I will go ahead and use the TV setting on a high number. Wasn't sure what ISO to use due to lighting. I don't think there will be much (or very good) lighting. I'll give 400 a go. Don't want to get too grainy. Just want some really good splashing shots. Will wrap in plastic. Thanks for the tip!

I have a digital slr canon 300d. We have our school swimming carnival tomorrow and I want to take some really excellent shots especially of the slpashing into the water etc ( they need to be really detailed for a foyer display). What do I set my camera to to get best results (indoor pool). Thanks!

So sad are some of those stories. Loving watching all this dog tv in my hols though!

Where Is The Cheapest Place To Buy A Dremel From?
cavmad replied to Chocolate's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am wondering this too. My dogs are happy to lay there and let me cut their nails and I've never cut too close to the quick. I always leave a little bit of nail. -
I am extremely particular about my dogs grooming as I have seen a lot of shaved cavs and I really don't like it. We had both of our dogs done last saturday and I was delighted with the results. The groomer we use runs a pick up and deliver service and after he had picked up both dogs at 8am, I immediately rang the shop and spoke to his wife, giving very explicit details. She was really thankful because afterall they just want to do what you as the owner wants. I think it depends on the dogs hair. Our boy has very very straight hair, has never been clipped really short, has always just had trims. His hair goes pretty much in the same direction and he doesn't matt too much. Our female however is a different story. We adopted her from the pound when she was 2 and I'm not sure if she had been shaved or not but her coat was a total mess and we are still trying to recover it. Her hair grows in what seems like a million different directions, grows really really long and just doesn't seem to sit tidy.It is also very thick and heavy. I am dead against shaving but we wanted it shorter for the summer. The groomer suggested and used a #7 on her and we were/are delighted. She looks like a gorgeous teddy bear. On both dogs she trimmed their ears, under their feet, the fringe on the back of front and back legs and tidied up the tail. We like the hair on top of the feet so she just trimmed that too, instead of shaving it all off. She also tidied up and trimmed the hair around their bottoms but didn't shave it off. I still really like my cavs to look like cavs. Will try and find some before and after shots of stella in particular. Its a big difference!

Oh god, how dreadful. I am so sorry for you. We take ours to an off leash part of our local beach regularly and I worry about them getting mauled by a bigger dog. I am so sorry for your loss. xxxx

I highly recommend this over the shark cartilage. MSM is said to have pain relieving and anti-inflam properties. It's tasteless, doesn't smell, as soon to be appearing in 'treat form', using Vets Best for flavour! Plus. its a little kinder to the sharks... Your'e probably right about the price. We pay $50 for powedered shark cartilage from the helath food store. It absolutely reeks and they get a levelled teaspoon in their dinner every night.
