  1. Does anyone know the breed of the dog in the Sunday Telegraph yesterday that was featured with Tom Williams? It was never mentioned in the article. Just curious as it looked massive!
  2. I have a cargo barrier but the dogs are in a crate in the boot area. If my female holds her breathe and sucks her gut in, she can just squeeze through the cargo barrier. hence the crate. I had them tethered in the boot behind the cargo barrier once and nearly crashed the car when Stella decided to squash herself through the gap at the side of the cargo barrier............of course she got stuck and looked very strange. Now its crate every single time.
  3. I often buy lamb bones from Coles for my two cavs as they can gnaw and chew on them and not really break any of the actual bone off, so there's no danger of choking or blockage. I've given them chicken necks in the past, even cut the chicken necks into pieces because Stella inhales her food rather than chewing it but have stopped because I'm worried that they will choke or get a blockage. Any clues on good bones to feed that won't end up with us as the vet?
  4. Am interested in the replies as I am having a terrible time with this at the moment. Both of my dogs are toilet trained (or so I thought) but lately Cooper has been an absolute pain. I don't know whether its because we are slowly starting to get things ready for the baby or what, but I am almost at my wits end with him. I went into my ensuite to go to the loo the other night and I left the bathroom door open. Both dogs followed me into the bedroom and jumped up onto the bed. Almost immediately I saw Cooper cock his leg. I couldn't believe it. Of course I roused on him but I still had to change all of the bedding. Then, the other night I went to bed and my husband came home late from work. He came into the bedroom to say hello and as he did, the dogs hopped up on the bed too. Cooper piddled right next to me and then sat down right next to me. Again, another sheet change. I was furious. Then, I came home to find he had cocked his leg up against the bin in the kitchen. So now, they are not allowed in the bedrooms AT ALL.....for ANY REASON. We have a baby gate which seperates our kitchen and lounge room and we have started keeping them in the kitchen/ dining part. We do have a great pee-on-command (especially before we go out somewhere) routine, but lately he seems to be marking and I think he may be being territorial over me. To top it off, he is humping Stella (at which point I shout 'NO') but its hard to stop if I'm not watching him all the time. Grrrrr.....frustrating, especially seeing as we are trying so hard to make sure noth dogs are included and not left out with the addition of the baby in 8 or so weeks.
  5. I don't know what 'zoomies' are but mine arent allowed to run madly around on them. This doesn't stop them doing the 'fred flintstone drive' (i.e feet madly scrambling but they dont seem to be going anywhere) if they hear the next door neighbours dog bark and want to rush out to bark at them. Similarly they do the same thing when someone comes to the door (but they are behavioural issues rather than floor issues). I have seen my female slip on her bottom on the timber floors though. Definately would not recommend them.
  6. Dogs and timber floors are not good. I have two cavaliers and floating wood floors and they are scratched to buggery from the dogs. I have had to cover most of the floors with mats and rugs. Next time I would go slate or tiles.
  7. I have a 2000 model commodore wagon and I love it. I have looked around at other cars and I'm not really convinced you get as much room in the back as you do with the commodore wagon. I have had my eye on a subaru for a while but I haven't actually got into the back of it and checked out the space. I have a large crate in the back plus shopping bags, a big container of water and coolant and will soon add a pram and I know it will all fit in the wagon comfortably. It is a dilemma but I really feel the commodore wagon might be the biggest boot wise.
  8. It must be just mine then..........I brush them 3-4 times a week otherwise I end up with a tangled, matted nightmare and still the hair is everywhere (not that I am complaining as I love love love my cavvies). It's just something to be aware of. I have a furminator but they both hate it, particularly Cooper who is quite lean...it doesnt matter how gentle I am!
  9. Only get a cavalier if you can handle the massive amount of shedding they do too. We have two cavs and the hair they leave around the place is enough to keep you warm for many many winters. Cavs are friendly, loveable, dont require a massive amount of exercise and are great around kids. You have to really watch their weight, they can be greedy little buggers and their coat can be high maintainance (we don't get our clipped, hence the reason I say this). They are very food obsessed which can make training a breeze. They love love love to be around people too. Good luck!

So sorry to hear about your little pickle passing. Absolutely wonderful photos....what a great tribute!
  11. yes i have - but someone wisely said..which has made me change my mind..its better to get a puppy - because you dont know if the older dogs have been around children. and they might not have the right temperament ..or something along those lines lol:) this thread seems never ending , and i keep going round in lil circles I disagree with this advice. Not wise advice at all, and probably from somebody that doesn't know anything about rehoming adult dogs. An older dog that has been living with kids and is good with them is a much safer bet than a pup. The thing is to talk to the breeder/owner and get information about the dog's past. Obviously a dog that has been living in a kennel without any contact with kids isn't going to be suitable, but you can find out that information, and you can see how the dog reacts to the kids. Temperament is much easier to judge in adult dogs than it ever will be in pups. With pup you will only ever judge the potential, not the actual temperament. I disagree too, especially with cavs. My female (which I adopted from the pound) is better with kids than my male which we have had since 8 weeks. She is loads calmer and tolerates kids much better. My male just gets over excited and wants them to throw a ball all the time.
  12. In a word, yes, both of my dogs have the squirts after we visit the beach. It doesnt last long and they return to normal very soon. Its from drinking too much sea water.
  13. Yes! Stella gives me the filthiest look when I make her go outside to go to the toilet and even then, she does it on the concrete. Flat out refuses to walk on wet grass.
  14. I bought this one as my two sleep inside and they sleep together. You can get small ones though. If they arent chewers and you want something that will last forever, this will be it IMO. http://www.alfrescoemporium.com.au/index.a...l=1312&r=98
  15. RIP Big Daddy. Such a wonderful wonderful dog.

  18. Big thumbs up for Hugh Bain as well. He isn't great with the people skills but he is amazing wih animals. One of those vets that really likes cats though so beware if you do go there and your dog doesn't like cats. He has quite a few which live in the surgery. I could not fault him. He is on Wyong Road at Bateau Bay / Killarney Vale.
  19. .....sitting outside having my cornflakes with the dogs walking around the back yard. Stella decides that she is going to do a poo. I don't know what went wrong but after she did it she must have realised that it didnt actually end up on the grass, rather all tangled in the hair around her bottom. She then proceeded to come onto the concrete verandah and do bottom skids everywhere. She normally does this so I wasnt too worried (yes, have checked her for worms and had the anal glands cleaned out regularly, she still does it) but when I started to see poo being smeared everywhere I realised something was worng. Laid her down on the grass and had a close inspection, just what you want when your pregnant and have just had breakfast. the whole poo was all stuck there so I got the scissors and started cutting it all out. Then turned the hose on very softly and started washing the smaller bits out. Turns out I have knicked her, about the size of a grain of rice, just near her bottom. No bleeding but there is a cut there. Poor little thing, didnt make one single sound! I feel so bad. I finished cleaning her up and put some betadine on cotton wool on it. Is there anything else I could/ should do? I'll keep my eye on it and keep up with the betadine. Hope it doesnt get worse! Poor Stelly! There was just a mess of poo and hair everywhere.
  20. try setting rat traps in the garden bed, no bait and under your bedroom window, they won't come back if they tread on one Ooh that's a good idea! I'd feel like crap if one of the kittens got one though....but it IS driving me mental! if they have small kittens wondering they need a good kick up the ar@# but try mouse traps then as they wont damage a kitten. as you may have gathered I believe cats should have the same rules as dogs and be kept at home unless on lead. I agree with you. I don't let my dogs roam the streets crapping in everyones yard so I don't get why they think its ok for their cats to do it.

  22. I am having the same problem with cats next door and I cannot and do not want to talk to my neighbours about it as the woman is a complete psycho...screaming her head off all the time, driving like a maniac in a small suburban street, on christmas eve the police paid them a visit. They have two cats and a dog and now have another (3rd!) litter of kittens. I have a garden bed out the front which has trees in it, in the vain attempt that I can grow a hedge. All of the cats use it as a kitty litter tray. I went out to check on the trees yesterday and over half of them are dying and covered in a mould type substance and the flies were just incredible. I am thinking of going to the nursery on the weekend and buying bigger already established trees and planting them and then putting chicken wire or something similar over the top of the garden bed. I have tried the repellants and the white pepper and nothing works. They also all get under our bedroom window at night and fight and carry on. I feel like going over there and just saying, Hmmm maybe my dogs can come and trash your garden and poo all over your lawn as thats what you cats are doing', but the psycho chick is totally unpredicatable!
  23. Just wanted to share a pic of the new dog bed I bought for Stella and Cooper. They had a bed of similar size. Most nights they curl up together and sleep but if one doesnt feel like doing that he/she takes a sofa or arm chair or the floor! Anyway, I laybyed this new bed ages ago and it finally arrived today. I do have to make one adjustment though. I think the wooden legs are too long so I am going to get the GA at work to shorten them for me. It's supposed to be for both but obviously Stella thinks first in first served! None of mine have ever chewed anything (touch wood) so it should stay in one piece!
