  1. Hey guys I know this is really hard without a picture, but: The other day when I took Odin to the vet I saw a very big (pregnant?) white dog with a curved snout. It reminded me of a put bull but looking at pictures of pit bulls it looks nothing like one except for the mouth. The nose didnt dip in at the eyes and the fear I felt at seeing this dog has made me want to learn more about it. If this works... So If I use dots, a normal dogs nose looks something like: /~~~~| -----/ | \_ The dog is saw was like this: GAH... impossible.. Ok basically when you pat your dog down the nose between the eyes, it dips down, in order to pat this dog that way you would follow the snout like an oval from the nose to over the head, there is no dip, it in fact goes the other way, I know this is a really bad description but I am pretty sure it was some form of "bully" breed? ETA: Wow... if that's a "normal" dog I should take arty to the vet... xD yay ascii text >.< ETA2: Duh... It was shorthaired, white, with a pinky nose, pointy ears and VERY muscley.
  2. There is a choice at least of whether or not you go, I have no beach, not even some water in my area that Arty can have a paddle in, the only choice I have is to get him a clam shell and that wont last long. I do understand that you get worried about your dogs, some big, some small, some fragile, some not, some excitable etc. Whilst size plays a part to a degree, it is your job as an owner to protect your dogs life. Not bites, not scratches. Each one is a potential death and it is our jobs to defend these little guys with OUR lives. If you do not feel safe taking your sweethearts to an off-lead area then definitely don't! We all need to feel safe, especially our furkids. There are badly trained dogs out there, terrible owners and both come with no recall :p We have to deal with that and be prepared for that when we enter an off-leash area. That said are there any on-leash areas in your vicinity? Maybe change it up a bit? If you have a very small beach then being there with a 100+ dogs (exaggeration I know) wouldn't be ideal especially if you know some of the owners to be... well, lets use the word "boisterous" :p Also (sorry I read the post but not the name) To the person whose dog got hit by a stranger: I hope you smacked the ----- back!!!! Grarg... Can't stand people hitting animals, let alone (my) own!
  3. Wow. That's... <must restrain self> ridiculous. I am glad I don't live there. If it starts with that where does it end. I understand for an unruly dog, but as you said behaviour concerns can be dealt with in other ways I loved having Arty at the cafe with me today, and he loved the attention (he's a people magnet). To add to that there is cafe two doors down from me and I would be devastated if he wasn't allowed there! (they have a pug though and are smitten by arty too) So much could change I think if more dog owners were more responsible, training, picking up after your dog, ensuring their behaviour is correct for a public area, so many issues could be solved, but too many people are hell-bent on doing the wrong thing, or potentially just as bad - simply not caring.
  4. Listening to your stories, I think I will count myself lucky. Today, Arty and I went to a cafe and spent some time with friends there. Then Sue and I went to the pet wharehouse near us, pets are allowed inside, however as Arty's not had his vaccination yet he didn't come with me. Here I have never seen a sign saying no dogs. Only when I go to parks do I see "no dogs" or more often "dogs must be on leash" signs. So i guess in hindsight I'm lucky. I do think that people need to incorporate dogs into their lives more. Most people I know only see there pets as friendly ornaments for the home and very few take them out and about. It's hard to believe but they don't even know what they are missing! So many wonderful things
  5. His name was going to be Gift of Artemis, but his name is just Artemas which means gift of, or, follower of, Artemis had to find a way around the fact that Artemis is female and my fluff ball is a boy ;)
  6. I think that one issue is that people don't realise how much a dog can bring to their lives. Since I got arty a week ago, I've had puppy play date offers and going to cafe's with him, so many things you can do with your dog, but people are afraid that their dogs wont be welcome. I do understand that not everyone is interested in doing these things and more importantly the requirement for a dog to have good manners when out and about but this is something that if you want to take your dog out and about you usually teach them so that they are easier to take with you. I want arty to be able to do practically everything with me and that means I need him to be listening to commands and doing what I tell him when I tell him so we both stay safe. I think if more emphasis was put on: "Have a well trained dog and you can do heaps of awesome stuff with it" rather than "have your dog trained so it isnt a danger/destructive/menace" then some owners would be more inclined to train. I do believe there needs to be more dog friendly places here in Ballarat, but, that said, I know I am also lucky in that we have the biggest park as an off-lead area. I just remember that when I was a kid in Perth there were so many places that you could take your dog and when we came to Victoria we felt as if we couldn't even take them out of the house for all the rules here.
  7. Yes Arty was "meant to be" but there was a lot of confusion with the parents as I was told in the beginning that I was to get the male from the litter with the most potential. Then I was told that the pups had died. Then I was told that there was in fact a pup available from that litter and that they had previously had him "popped away" for someone else but that they had since pulled out. It was a lot of confusion but I believe that the breeder simply had second thoughts about giving a pick out to someone who lived so far away from her. Whatever her reasons I love my little ball of fluff and it is as if he was meant to be with me all along as it kinda went in a full 360
  8. Heya just got home and checked his papers, they're all signed by the breeder ready for my information to be jotted down and sent off Freak-out over! Hehehe As for not showing him on Limited Register, I know this but he will (at my discretion) be getting evaluated by the breeder for showing/breeding at 12 months (if I choose to do this) and she said she would help me get into showing and show me the ropes if I am interested. As yet, he's still only 9 weeks (as of yesterday!) so I will take some time to think about it. As it is I am just happy to have a companion goldie who loves to play and learn (so far he is learning very quickly!) And my little ball of love just figured out his new treat ball and is hoovering it up as we speak!) I'll send the forms out tomorrow once we can access our money again! (stupid CBA... >.<)
  9. Ah fantastic! You guys are awesome, where did you get that bit from Showdog? I had a very hard time navigating ANKC... >.< So not a chance for Artemas even then, kewl, as long as there was no other option then I can live with his name as is, after all, his microchip and name tag say Artemas, and I can make a lot of puns out of "Arte". Tehehehe I will definately check the forms for the name change tonight though. If they haven't been filled out by the breeder then I am heading down that way this weekend. So I will get her to sign them then as long as she is home and available.
  10. I will look at the form as soon as I get home! I didn't know about any of this! Thankyou for your help guys I will put more updates as soon as I get home and look at arty's book (has his papers etc in it). Not happy. So many things have made me feel unsafe about all of this lately. Just really on edge, changes in dates and names and parents of the puppy and all manner of things that just leave me feeling excessively uneasy. Arty has been checked for health issues, and there were none that the vet could see. He is microchipped to ME and as of the 21st will be registered locally to me too. Will the Pedigree forms need to be in my name to have him successfully registered locally? ETA: The kennel prefix is only seven characters, but I'm loathe to post it on here. This is probably just the freakings out of an ill-educated first time pedigree owner (as I am wont to do!) and I don't want it to reflect badly on the breeder. She has been very nice and for the most part helpful, just discovering a few things here and there that don't add up. Normally I'd just ask her, but I am so afraid of offending her that I want to know everything before I dig myself a hole so to speak... The fact that Artemis is already taken would explain a lot, thankyou for checking for me (so much!) can you have variations though? Like do you think that I could get away with Artemas? Or probably not going to happen? And no, he is not going to be shown (at this point, that may change in the future). I just want to keep my options open so to speak and though he ARTE so cute (get it ), I really would prefer Artemas as it is his name.
  11. There's so many shady things about this I'm starting to really worry
  12. What transfer into my name? The pup is in the breeders name, is it supposed to be in mine? I am confused, I have never had a pedigree pup before. The papers I have say her name at the top and at the bottom, as owner and breeder.
  13. Basically, the name was originally meant to be "(kennel prefix) Gift of Artemis", the breeder has said that this was not possible as it cannot have more than one word with the prefix, though I have seen others with more than one word, she had to change it on the spot apparently so his name is "(Kennel Prefix) Arte", I would prefer his other name in this case "Artemas" and was not asked or talked to prior to the decision being made
  14. Yes his Limited Registration papers through the ANKC(?)
  15. Hiya, Just wondering how one goes about having a dogs pedigree name changed on a form? The form states Arty's name incorrectly and I just want to have it altered. Is this even possible? I am aware that I have to go through my breeder to have the limited register papers altered in any way but I want to get all my information straight before I go to her with this... A little worried.
  16. I think it is a brilliant idea to display ones that need homes from animal aid etc though!
  17. I'm so glad that things are starting to get better. Keep working on it, it is so devastating when two beloveds start to not get along but I think with some work you will get there and they will both be able to be kept
  18. Sweet I might grab one of those on Thursday then
  19. Hahaha yeah he's surprisingly well behaved! Even wakes me up to go out to the toilet
  20. Arty chews on his back foot but he only does it when he scratches his back ear at first it's like he offended at the foot and not sure where it came from then it's as if it a new play toy. I've checked it for grass seeds or even small cuts on the pad and in between his toes but there doesn't seem to be a cause. Is it just him discovering his back leg and being playful or something to worry about?
  21. Arty my golden retriever has a nylabone, a raccoon toy and some edible rectangle chews. He has lots of things to chew but he LOVES the small rectangular chews. The only issue is he makes very short work of them... What is a good chew for arty for inside? A pigs ear? Roo tail? A meaty bone is a little too messy for inside... Any ideas?
