  1. i have a question relating to cockers. How well do cockers do as outside dogs? I know they were originally bred as gundogs and like being outside doing things. But I would have thought they are quite family orientated? I read something from Dr. Ark saying how they would be fine living outside in a UK winter and thought this was a bit fetched.

  2. The red and blue rings on the brush denote how stiff/hard the bristles are on it. Without checking mine, I can't remember which one is the softest though.

so are the red handle ones harder than the blue handle ones?

i bought some stuff from here http://www.showdogstore.com/index.aspx. A CC pin brush is $22 from here compared to $40 from the other site. postage is obviously more expensive but if you buy a few light things it still works out cheaper

  3. Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever used this company to buy stuff from? what are they like to deal with etc?

I noticed they had doggyman slickers for about $15/16 and I thought they are normally about $30. The only difference i can see is they have a red ring on the handle and most of the doggyman slickers ive seen have a blue handle.

I find it odd though that they are not competitive on prices for their others products like their chris christensen ones. eg i have bought a CC brush for nearly half of what they charge.

  4. I don't think there is a Clipperworld in Perth but there are plenty of other clipper places or places to send blades for sharpening.

We bought our grooming table from the dog shop at the Dogswest grounds. They have lots of different heights and sizes although I can't find them listed on their website. http://members.iinet.net.au/~wasps/

Thanks for that, i will have to go have a look. How much are the tables roughly? Too much bending over is killing my back.

  5. Hi guys,

Just wondering what people make of all the claims pet food manufacturers make about kibble. You know that it cleans teeth and gums, reduces tartar, that its the shape of the kibble that does it etc etc. Is there much of a scientific basis for these claims? Because too me it really sounds like great spin.

  6. What shits me the most is I've always done what is in the best interests of my bitches and pups and have made informed and educated decisions. I chip and register, follow the leash laws etc and currently I am a criminal.

Earlier this year I said I wouldn't do it again, as I feel torn. I can't expect others to follow the laws if I won;t follow them myself, but I cannot and will never whelp and raise a litter away from the house.

This is what makes me a law breaker. And to think I could be charged, lose my home and be prevented from owning and showing/breeding a pedigree dog again.

Where are these laws that say you have to raise a litter in kennels away from your house?

  7. Seriously, who cares. Surely you can get your kicks from other means other than making people feel bad about themselves.

Its one thing to make all these absurd statements but when you can't even use basic grammar I think its just ridiculous, so get back in your box.

  8. are you vegetarian Moselle?

I eat eggs obtained from a farmer neighbour of mine (free range). I also eat chicken and on rare occasions....fish. Have never eated lamb. Have not eaten pork in ages; haven't eaten beef in 18 months.

    grammar police :thumbsup::dancingelephant:

  9. how do you stop your ferrets running away

warrens are self contained units, even along a massive fenceline there will be separations between clusters of holes so they can't get too far. The ferrets are so driven by the smell of the rabbit they stay down the hole and keep running about until the smell subsides (ie their own scent and urine covers it, they scent mark as they run about) and then when it's over they womble out of the holes and snuffle around. They do get a prey reward, when they come when called I offer them a dead rabbit to latch onto. We do a lot of the recall work at home, you call them and when they come back you give them a big scrub-a-dub and some some raw food, same goes when you feed them, condition them to the noise.

Pretty much the same as training a really high driven working line dog. Except when it's over they're happy to just shut down until the next scent patch gets them going. Plus the great thing .... ferrets eye sight is pretty bad, they're short sighted creatures so they want to follow their nose down the hole more then spotting something halfway across the paddock and bounding after it  As long as you have some fresh food or at least some blood stain on your shoe you can lure them

I would love to go if I was in Victoria. I used to go ferreting with my grand-dad when I was a wee kid growing up in gippsland. We used to put nets over the rabbit holes and catch the bunnies as they got caught in the net and then quickly break their necks and then grab the ferret. Do you get bitten much nekhbet? I remember the ferrets being so wound up that they would sometimes bite you if you werent careful. What is a scrub-a-dub btw???

  10. As I did when having my 5 1/2mth old whippet speyed last Friday. Perfectly healthy, but there's no way I'm risking kidney problems, blood pressure dropping too low, or not having IV access should it be needed intraop.

I did a spay last week on a healthy 5 year old dog, with a BP monitor fitted, and it was a huge heads up to me to find out first hand how very low BP can drop before you notice a problem with perfusion just based on clinical signs. Our specialist anaesthetist (watching over my shoulder!) says she's had several calls over the years from vets who didn't fit a BP monitor, gave NSAIDs after the operation as routine pain relief, and then called in a panic when the dog went into acute renal failure due to the combination of low BP and NSAIDs... like I say, it was a huge learning experience for me.

Sorry to go OT, OP. :)

congratulations Staranais was that your first spey?

  11. Can anyone thats been at the show tell me the distance between the benches and the railings for the public?? And are they moveable?

I am hoping to get a table in behind the ralings and want to make sure I have enough room to get past! lo,ll

i didnt think there was much room wazzat. it would be annoying showing there i think, all crowded and people coming and touching before they ask etc

  12. after talking to the vet again she thinks monte has arthritis in the joint. So she is recommending meloxicam for a month and then zydax injections and jointguard/glyde. I just didnt think it was that bad. Like before he luxated the patella he had no signs of arthritis. And it only seems to be the one joint that is affected and it has improved with rest. I started jointguard and fish oil nearly 2 weeks ago so that hasnt really had time to work.

  13. Had an xray and it seems the cruciate ligament is fine. The vet thinks it was a grade 1 patella luxation and now he is limping occasionally when he is anticipating the pain. So a pretty good result really. So rest and stronger anti-inflammatories should sort him out
