  1. A few Adelaide DOLers recommend Mark Singer: http://caninetraining.com.au/
  2. Loads of errors and poor handling from me Tiggy but honestly if she worked like that at a trial I wouldn't be disappointed
  3. Video from tonight's training session, quite a few distractions around, excuse the background music - someone was practicing some DWD :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4ZcNZGS72o Loads of terrible handling errors, Daisy had a sniff and I really need to work on my paces, but this is the first lengthier called heel round we have done in quite some time (weeks and weeks) and I am really pleased with how Daisy is coming along. We only started adding in that style of LAT to our heel work over the weekend so we are still working on getting them 100% but for a dog who even a week ago couldn't do them and had very limited back end awareness I am quite pleased with how she is going with them. I also did a fair bit of work tonight with no food or treat pouch on me and it did not make a tiny bit of difference
  4. You guys have nothing to be worried about. Last time Steve was in QLD for a workshop Daisy barked the entire almost two hours it took to get to Camp Tailwaggers and barked for almost the entire workshop :)
  5. OMG Serena you rock!! That's the loveliest pic I have ever seen of my little terror Thank you sooooo much!! Can't wait till after June when we can see the final result
  6. Daisy is 17kg so she's not that small. I like her size, compact
  7. For me one problem with head collar is that even if you use them properly they can still be highly aversive to the dog. Some dogs just don't like them and find wearing them very stressful. I've never seen the extreme reaction dogs can exhibit when put on a head collar (completely shutting down, rolling on the floor, scratching their face etc) with any other tool - prong, e-collar, martingale, check chain etc. I don't know of any other tool that requires such a massive desensitization process just to get the dog to wear the tool before you can even use it. I don't doubt that they can be the right tool for some dogs, but I am just not a fan and I would never use one myself.
  8. Sorry, but that is not true for crossbred or purebreds. The combination of genes possible from the mating of two purebred dogs is quite wide. A whole raft of studies have looked at this. At the end of the day, poodles still look like poodles, pugs look like pugs, etc etc. They may vary in size, colour, length of muzzle, blah blah blah but you still know what breed of dog you are looking at. The same applies to xbred puppies from purebred parents. How bizarre You can't control genetics, if you breed two dogs of different breed together you have no idea what you will end up with - each pup could look completely different. I've seen crossbred litter mates that look completely different in terms of size, coat type/colour etc, how do you explain that?
  9. Pffffft who'd go an Aussie if you could have a beagle????
  10. A beagle is on my wishlist for someday for obedience and agility It would have been my next dog (whenever that will be!) if I hadn't have fallen in love with another breed What could be better than a beagle?? If I wanted a higher drive dog I don't think I would go with a BC. A Toller, working line GSD, Malinois, Dobie, would all be a preference for me before a BC.
  11. A couple of articles that really encapsulate why *I* don't like them and wouldn't chose to use one; http://www.k9pro.com.au/pages.php?pageid=31 http://flyingdogpress.com/content/view/54/97/
  12. http://www.ilnam.com.au/Community-Coolanga...-Tony-Bulke.htm Lots to answer the first question I think they are selling it due to a marriage break up. It is an excellent set up, I've been to a couple of training workshops there... lovely place to stay.
  13. I'm a sucker for punishment so at this stage probably I would like a breed with a bit more drive but I love beags and I want to know what it will be like to train one for obedience from an early age.
  14. LOL Emm they can be a bit of a challenge but I am looking forward to getting another one to see what it will be like to train them as a dog sports dog from the start (I didn't start training Daisy properly until she was two). For me beags tick all the boxes, good size, low maintenance grooming, smart, outgoing, very eager to learn if you motivate them the right way, active and it gives me a challenge which I like. Not for everyone but more than capable IMO. Eta: not tying to convince you BTW just explaining why they are the small competition dog for me, as I get asked a lot why I would want to train a beagle.
  15. Beagles all the way for me, though probably a bit more of a challenge than you are after
  16. Clyde - that's it and it's the boarding kennel and the holiday units and conference centre as well.
  17. ..... tell me what you want covered :D. Perhaps I could round up Kelpie-i to come as well? And/or K9 Pro. oooh .... "K9 Pro Pro K9" or "Pro K9 K9 Pro" . That sounds like it would be tonnes of fun - K9 Pro should be coming up to QLD again this year perhaps he should drag you along :D ETA: Apologies for going OT
  18. Yes, just kidding around, unfortunately Perhaps you could just come up for a workshop instead
  19. It's still up for sale AFAIK! Come on Erny, you know you want to
  20. OK, I'll go hunting for boarding facilities for Cos and Erny here in Brisbane tomorrow. I'll let you both know when I've found something suitable
  21. Bloody terrible and a supposedly reputable kennel here too Now whenever I board the dogs regardless of if it's Micha or Daisy or both I always make sure the kennel (and we don't use that same kennel obviously) are told the dogs are ONLY to be run and exercised with each other. I do not trust the kennel to run them with dogs I would consider safe. If they can stuff up with Micha, who I made sure they knew was DA, what about other dogs whose owners have done the same thing? Or owners who don't tell the kennel their dog has issues? But then I worry they won't be exercised because I've said they can only run with each other ETA: Erny can you come and open kennels in Brisbane??? PLEASE???
  22. LOL Staranais - it's always the handler who has the most to learn It was only recently that I had taken Daisy for a walk and after we left mum decided to walk Micha too (unbeknown to me). She walked a shorter distance than us and got home before us. When I was walking Daisy home, she suddenly went NUTS and practically pulled me over madly tracking this scent. She was zigzagging across the path, totally focused on the scent, she 'tracked' Mish all the way home - I could have told you what side of the road he and mum had been walking on When I walked in the door, mum was really surprised at how I knew she had been out walking Micha
  23. For me that is a trust thing, because when I say I trust the trainer, I mean that I trust them to handle and train my dog in a way that I am happy with. But I totally agree with what you are saying and that's one of the reasons I am reluctant to let anyone even handle my own dog for a short period of time It's not even that I do things right or perfectly but that I know my dog better than anyone and at least if I stuff it up, it's all my fault I don't like boarding my dogs because I really don't trust kennels. It's not that I think they are all terrible, but I just remember one of the last times I boarded the dogs, and I specifically made sure they knew Micha was ONLY to ever be let out to run on his own or with Daisy because he is DA. He had stayed at these kennels at least twice before. I called up to check how the dogs were doing and they said to me "WELL, Micha is NOT very good with other dogs" :D I was fuming and told them I was aware of that and had told them many times and written it in our contract that Micha is DA and is not to be run with dogs other than my beagle. They sheepishly then looked on his file and said it was noted there. WTF were they thinking, how far did it set my dog back, and what about the other dogs he obviously had run ins with??? :D :D :p :D ETA: I'd probably be too embarrassed to send Daisy to someone like Cosmolo when I went away. She'd be soooooooo naughty :D
  24. Are you going to do tracking with her at some point, then? She sounds like she'd be a star at it. And it is FUN! Yes, thinking about it! Would like to get a couple of obedience titles first though. But I agree, I think she would be a natural.
  25. Cos, you are one of the trainers I would trust to take my dog. But only because I feel like I "know" you through posting on DOL and I have a general idea on the kind of training approach you would take with dogs - I don't think I could trust someone I didn't already know. But then again I wouldn't ever do B&T because I like to do all the training myself (the control freak thing again). In fact I'd rather send my dog to you for boarding than any of the boarding kennels we have here
