As poodlefan said - stay far FAR away from Bark Busters!! They will cost you at least as much as a session with K9 Force does. In terms of feeding please check out Triangle of Temptation, it is very successful and IMO everyone should use this with their dogs regardless of any behavioural problems they have: http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=tot.html

My beagle was like this as a little puppy. She would be sleeping most of the time or lazing around and then suddenly - BAM! Major zoomies. She would run around and around and around barking that hound bark that beagles do when they are excited or chasing things. She would be hyper. She would be very difficult to calm down. Her eyes would go "wild" Zoomies are not unusual and IMO I don't think it is unusual for a puppy to be mouthing or nipping when it is excited, as it has not yet been taught that this is not acceptable behaviour. What I would do with Daisy when she got major zoomies would to get her to focus her energy on a game - so I would play fetch with her and throw her toy, get her to sit when she bought it back to me and wanted me to throw it again etc. That way I would be controlling her energy (to a point) and putting it into something constructive (for her) that didn't involve running around, jumping on furniture etc.

Thanks for the tips everyone!! Erny, the vet had actually sedated her so he could do a really thorough clean and examination so I would assume he would have noticed if there was a bigger problem. I will definately ask him about perforated ear drums when she goes back to get her ears checked up on.

Agression Towards Children Only
huski replied to Lil Miss LeiLani's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Have to disagree with that, i've spent a fair bit of money on one's with a so called proven track record and didn't get much more than advice. I guess it's a matter of finding the right one. I myself have all but given up on handing over anymore cash to these so called specialist trainers. I really wonder now if some trainers receive their qualifications out of a cornflake's box. I hope the topic starter finds the right one. If she contacts Jane she will be on the right track -

I am no expert but I think that instead of putting him in a situation where he has direct contact with kids, maybe work towards this whilst improving his focus and attention on you. He obviously has a fear of kids so at the moment I would not put him into a situation where he has to be around them, until his focus is at a point where he will look to you for direction instead of looking at the kids. Micha's focus was ok until a dog came along and then I could jump up and down screaming and he wouldn't care... I think in this situation training might need to be very gradual, by forcing him to sit with kids I think it is making his behaviour worse. ETA: I thought with Micha if I kept taking him to the dog park and socialising him with other dogs that his behaviour would get better, instead it got worse. -

LOL @ the jinx Micha's problems were a bit different but also started from negative experiences. He was attacked a few times as a puppy and younger dog, and had negative socialisation with dogs that dominanted him. He became a bully and would dominant young puppies. He would mouth at their necks (not causing injury but scaring them) and would dominate them. It got worse when a stray dog tried to attack us on the way home - after that he started lunging at any dog we passed in the street and would want to dominate every new dog he met, he was automatically defensive. Jane developed a program for us where I worked on getting Micha's focus on me and not other dogs. She set out a training program where I would work on getting his focus over time before increasing the distance we could be near other dogs. Obviously it is something that took time but I can now take Micha to obedience classes and be within metres of other dogs without his focus waning. His patience was tested by an exuberant adolescent GSD the other night but I gave him a correction and he was back on track ETA: In the past Micha would have lunged and howled at the GSD and his focus would have been entirely on the other dog, his hackles would have been up etc. It feels very empowering to make progress with him and have him feel comfortable and confident around other dogs now Jane gave me a lot of support via email and we only needed one consult with her I don't think she would ever give up on a dog or put anything in the too hard basket. -

Ah ok sorry bout that, just realised ours was not a home consult so was probably different in price for that reason. Hope you can find a solution I understand the reluctance to spend more money when you have already got someone in, it can be quite disheartening when you don't get any results. ETA: Just saw your recent post and it sounds like a load of BS!!!!! That would be like me being told unless other people stopped walking their dogs near mine, he will never over come his dominance/aggression issues. I would contact Jane and tell her what the behaviourist has told you, how disheartening it was etc and see what she says - it might give you a good indication of how she would work with you to solve the problem and how it can be different to what you've already tried. -

You could always give the behaviourist I recommended to you a try, she is highly qualified and has worked with Steve from K9 Force (in fact she was a guest speaker at a seminar for him recently). Her consults are $80 to start with so it won't be that expensive. ETA: She has had a lot of experience dealing with aggressive issues in dogs. -
I thought she looked like she was! If you don't mind me asking which breeder did you get her from? (PM if you prefer) I have a tan and white too, they are the best colour if you ask me This is my T/W Daisy:
-
What beautiful beagles!! Is your older dog a tan and white coloured beagle or a tri colour?
-
Aha! I knew there was a reason they were going to a boarding kennel Yeah, I think she feels much better now her ears are clean. Thanks, it will be interesting not having a kitchen for a week
-
Ok, just got the beagle home According to the vet her ears were chock full of yeast and gunk I feel terrible, I should have taken her to the vet earlier, I had no idea it was so bad. He gave me some tablets to help the infection instead of ear drops. I wish she wasn't going to the boarding kennel tomorrow, I want to be able to keep an eye on her. Unfortunately the building work on our house starts on thursday so we don't have much of a choice I will be annoying the boarding kennel with calls every day I think
-
Thanks alanglen Daisy is so head strong, if she doesn't want to do something she will put up a major fuss! Hopefully we can over come this ear cleaning thing and I can work on desensitising her to it. Thanks so much for the link Leema. I am watching the video now, it is very helpful! I am going to pick Daisy up in a minute, will let you all know how she is when she gets home
-
LOL!! This is one circumstance where treats are not good enough Not even the vet could hold her down today
-
Thanks Cavnrott. I have don't mind doing ear drops as long as she doesn't mind them LOL! I am just worried I won't be able to do it properly.
-
The bugger is that she will be going to a boarding kennel for a week tomorrow, so I can't keep an eye on it. I took her to the vet today as I didn't want to leave it another week. I don't think the vet would have sedated her etc if she had been a bit easier to get ear drops in, he said she needs them twice a day for a week but obviously that is going to be physically impossible at the moment. I just can't believe how badly her "fear" of her ears being cleaned got so quickly, she has only recently become this difficult to do.
-
Just got back from the vet, as soon as the vet lifted Daisy's ear she wouldn't stay still and he could not even exam her. The infection was worse than I thought, the vet has had to sedate her and is going to clean/flush her ears out. I won't be able to pick her up for another couple of hours so I hope it all goes ok

Are all Tibetan Spaniels barkers? Is barking a breed trait? I ask because there is one in the street at the back of me about 3 houses down and it yaps all day. It's kept outside in the yard during the day, owners are probably at work. If they go out at night it barks non stop until they come home. Tibbies are natural alert dogs. They were originally bred (as taken from wiki) as their keen sight made them excellent monastery watchdogs, barking to warning of intruders and alert the monks. They should be reserved barkers that only bark when something is up. Our Tibbie x is a great "guard" dog. She is not a barker but she will bark if someone is standing in our driveway, if there is a possum in the tree etc. You know if she is barking that it is for a reason. I would suspect if it is in the yard outside and is barking non stop that it is under stimulated or it can see the street? Barking non stop is not a usual Tibbie trait IMO.

Ok, just called the vet and I am going to take her in this afternoon. I smelt her ears today and they are getting quite smelly I hope it is nothing too serious :D
-
Mum and I tried all last night to rub some cotton wool along the outside of Daisy's ear - not even putting anything inside it. As soon as she realised we wanted to touch her ears, she ran into her crate and would not come out. We lured her out with food but she wouldn't get near us. I put her collar and lead on and we tried to hold her down - she is one strong beagle!!! She won't even let me touch her ears when I am patting her she is so paranoid I will put something in them She is not being aggressive or growly, she just squirms until she can run away. I am going to call the vet today as I am worried she might be so touchy because her ears are sore due to an infection :D I am a bit worried as she and Micha are going away to a boarding kennel tomorrow for a week whilst our house is renovated and I won't be able to keep an eye on it.

I would highly recommend a Tibetan Spaniel!! They are a fantastic little breed, and are IMO, one of the best kept secrets of the dog world. I am a big dog person but we do have a Tibbie x... I will definately be getting a purebred one!! They are fantastic. If you would like a good breeder PM me or pop into the Tibetan breed thread in general they will be more than happy to help you! Look, IMO, it depends on the dogs personality as well as sex. If your pack is unstable you will very likely get fights between the dogs regardless of sex. I have two females here as well as a male, I do not have any fights nor would I find any fights acceptable.

OMG! only just saw this. So sorry to hear Jane. RIP ratty

:) Awww thank you to your daughter FGM!! I am making a funny squinty face, I don't really like getting my photo taken

I wouldn't use metho in case there might be an area of raw skin where the dog has been scratching. That would sting like blazes and you'd probably never get near the ears of that dog again without using force. Husky, carry the bottle of drops around in your pocket so they're not cold when you apply them. Don't let her see you with the bottle either. My dogs will run a mile if they see me with the ear drops but I'm able to sneak up on them and give an ear massage and apply the drops by stealth. If her ears are really dirty, smelly and infected you'll probaby need to have them flushed out under GA. Her ears are grubby and she sometimes scratches at them. The smell is only faint, kind of sweaty - it could be exascerbated by the fact she needs a bath
-
Thanks everyone. I will try getting her used to having her ears touched and will introduce a cotton pad with nothing on it at first so she is used to it. Dru - no worries, I am just very worried about her ears getting badly infected as they are quite smelly!!
