K9 Force Coming To Queensland
huski replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ditto. K9 Force is coming to Brisvegas, how exciting I'd love to learn how to handle my beagle more effectively. -
Thanks for the PM The brunch is yet to be finalised, we are just deciding on a venue that is suitable for all
-
Would love to meet both you and ROM, Erny! Are you coming to the brunch/meet up thingy on the Friday?
-
Actually, CDM does in fact know what she is talking about. She was giving you a very real scenario that could happen if you let you bitch have a litter.

Run free Cheyanna  PLP

Out of curiosity, how does a dog get desexed like a bitch? Yes, that is what happened to Micha. He had a retained testicle in his abdomen. He had to have two incisions - one to get rid of the outer testicle and the other to get rid of the retained testicle.
-
Steve is great, I would be excited too! Instead of feeding him for the day, give him his food via treats. This is what I do with Micha and Daisy - Micha puts weight on just looking at food, and by feeding them through training treats they will be nice and hungry and food motivated To keep it lean, I steam a chicken breast (I know, lucky bloody dogs) and chop it up for treats.

My Sibe has quite good recall (now, it took awhile - LOL). The key is to find something to motivate them. Does Zero like squeaky or tug toys? Is he food motivated? I am lucky with Micha because he loves both squeaky toys and food - I always use something high value when training like chicken or sausage or kabana. With Micha I found teaching recall like you do in obedience class quite helpful. We would go to the local playing field when it was quiet, and I would put him on a long lead. I would get him to do the commands he knows well like sit, down etc and reward him with the food/toy so he knows that I have something exciting. I would also throw the toy for him and get him to run with me (short bursts of running, quick changes of direction etc to get him excited and revved up). Then I would get him to walk beside me and I would change direction by running backwards and would yell "COME!" - the goal here is to get them to turn around and follow you, then once he was in front of me I would get him to sit and reward him. You may need to lure him with food at first to get the idea of what the command is asking for, but I found if I revved him up with a toy before hand he was quite eager to "work". You may also need to lure him in with the leash so he learns where he needs to go

Love all the pics everyone, looks and sounds like both dogs and owners had a great time. When's the Brisbane one?? :D -
Another blackdog user here I like the look of that DOOG thing though for walks!

Definitely go with a nice leather lead if you are looking for a strong lead! I wouldn't use anything else now. K9 Force has a nice selection of very strong leather leashes and the clips are brass so much stronger than many leads you buy. http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=leashes.html I also like the Puppia harnesses, they are nice and comfy for the dogs to wear - though not designed to stop pulling. ~Erin~ from this forum stocks them on her website: http://www.twosmallpuppies.com/

So sorry to hear that Kirsty She was a truly beautiful looking dog.

I'd definitely stick with Optimum
-
Ok, I would definitely stick to what your breeder advised. As I said, if you don't want to get super premium dried food (although expensive it does last longer as you don't need to feed as much) Optimum is probably the best supermarket food to get. I would definitely switch your pup back to the dried food and mince. But do try him on a little chicken neck, my pup loved having something to chew on
-
As long as your pup responds well to the dried food (i.e. no diarrohea) I would cut out the puppy roll entirely - all my pup was fed on when she was eating 3 meals a day was the dried food mixed in with some mince, or I'd give her a couple of raw chicken necks. What did your puppy's breeder recommend for diet? Our breeder recommended Optimum but we later switched to Royal Canin.
-
I wouldn't recommend pedigree or VIP - really, a better option if you don't want to go for a super premium dried food like Royal Canin, eagle pack, etc is Optimum - its not too expensive and you can get it from coles. They have a brand for puppies too - its not too bad and would be far better for the pup than puppy food roll. We would also feed a chicken neck or a bit of raw mince with the dried food - puppy food roll is really not neccessary. A crate would be better than the baby cot because the pup can chose to go in it whenever he wants to. However, it may also be a good idea to investigate getting a puppy play pen - much bigger space than a baby cot and he can have his dinner, play with his toys etc in there with out being pushed around by the other dogs. Puppies will get stressed out if older dogs are dominating them and you will find that because of this stress they will be harder to train and teach things to. Think of your puppy as a baby who needs to have positive socialisation experiences with other people and dogs - yelling at the pup for toileting inside, letting the other dogs dominate him etc are not positive experiences. You want your pup to trust you and learn that if he does what you ask him to do, he will be rewarded.
-
Take a deep breath, Animal Lover. No one is saying that only rich people can own dogs but merely suggesting that dog food roll is NOT a healthy diet for a little pup. That the food is designed for puppies does not make it good for them - Pal makes wet puppy food and its total crap! If you want to feed dog food roll at the very least get a good brand (they are not hugely expensive) like Scotties. It's not as good as it used to be but its still a lot better than other brands on the market. It is preservative free too - our breeders used to feed it occassionally. http://www.scottys.com.au/index.html You also mentioned you were feeding puppy milk - pups dod not need puppy milk at all in their diets so just give him some fresh water instead. I don't think anyone is saying dogs don't have an instinct to dominate younger pups - I'm sure many dog, my husky is one of them. When I bought my little beagle home at 8 weeks we knew we had to supervise her with my husky to make sure he didn't dominate or bully her. Just because it is his instinct to dominate her DOES NOT make is acceptable behaviour. We kept my pup and my older dog seperated when we weren't there to supervise - they could still see each other but could not phsyically interact. If my husky was too rough or dominant towards the pup he was told off and they were seperated - it didn't take long for him to learn he had to be gentle with her and would not get away with any dominating behaviour. When my pup was big enough to be left alone with him and they were getting along well in supervised play we left them alone together for short periods. I would recommend you get your pup a crate so he has a safe place to go where other dogs do not have access to him - think of it like his own bedroom. Hope this helps.

This thread has inspired me to go pick up our bike that was getting a service at the local bike shop place thingy. Both Micha and Daisy would love the run, any tips to introduce them to it?
-
It's pretty basic Huski and done on lead. A group of six or so competitors at a time line up with their dogs sitting in a heel position (you can push their bum in to the sit position). The judge will instruct you all to walk forward..... you move forward with the dog in a heel position for about 5-10 metres, you then about face and place your dog in a sit position (again you can "help" them into position). You then tell the dog to "stay" and walk forward to the end of your lead. The judge will then ask you to "call your dogs". You then call "come" or similar encouragingly and get the dog to come to you eagerly - then get them to sit again.... and that's it!! ;) The aim is to show that the dog is obviously eager to "work" both before and after strenuous activity. Thanks Caslero. Daisy does more than that at obedience training, so the actual commands/obedience stuff shouldn't be a problem ;) Thanks PF, I'm not a CCCQ member but Mish and Daisy are ANKC registered. Can't picture Cherry doing an edurance test ;) Does anyone know if ETs are run out of Brisbane?
-
What sort of obedience level is needed for a dog to compete in an ET test? If I could get fit enough ( ;) ) I can imagine Daisy would LOVE running with a bike.

I use Dr Susan Dawson at Anvet Kedron, and have done for years, she's excellent: http://www.anvetkedron.com.au/home/index.cfm
