:D you clutz Rom :p I am a master at confusing my dog  . I got so excited when Daisy did her first down on voice command that now all she wants to do is down. We do heel work and she will automatically sit.........and then down She looks up at me like "See, I did it before you even told me to! I am SO clever :D" She hasn't 100% got stand on voice or hand signal, it is proving quite challenging. When she's confused and doesn't understand what I want she will just drop instead

Brisbane Dog Obedience Club - Oxley
huski replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
There is one on at Chermside on a monday night if it's close enough for you? I'd get there at 7.30ish if you want to check it out. -
I agree with Rom I don't ever recommend franchises as a the quality and knowledge of a dog trainer is very much based on the individual not the organisation. Where are you located? If you're Aunt is in QLD/Brisbane area I can recommend you a much more affordable and highly knowledgable behaviourist.

K9Force .... was it suggested by someone that you do an internet consult? Is that what the OP has expected? Genuine question as your post seems to have sprung up out of the blue here. For my own information (I have a timid adused pound puppy that I have taken) K9 do you just train the dog, or do you teach the owner of the dog how to train their dog. Maybe having a look at Steve's website will answer this: http://www.k9force.net He trains the owner how to handle their dog.

Daisy finally learnt how to down on voice command only tonight. She needed only a slight hand signal to down previous to now, and she just wouldn't 'get' how to do it on voice. But now she does. Woohoo!!!!!!! Now all I have to do is teach stand on voice command......argh!

How Does Your Club Teach The Drop / Down?
huski replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
WOOHOO!!!!!!! First training session with Daisy since I made that post and I taught her to "down" with voice command only. Yay! Only thing now is if she is unsure what I want her to do she will do a down But progress - woohoo! -
I agree. It sounds like the pup hasn't been taught that mouthing/biting is not on from the get go - when I first starting jogging with daisy she would get excited and nip me in play as we were running. It was not aggressive behaviour, just poor training on my part. You are in NSW Frank - maybe pay Steve from K9 Force a visist with your family? ETA: http://www.k9force.net

LOL - we have been at this club for about eight months now. And of those eight months, about five have been spent in the class we are in now I should spend more time on day to day training but training a beagle can be so frustrating - when you make progress however the rewards feel huge! -

Daisy is 12 months old, and I thought we were making progress. Last night we went to training after a two week break and they had sprayed the paddock with this chemical to get rid of the bindis in the grass. Something about the smell sent daisy off and she spent 90% of our heel work with her nose on the ground. Patience is definately key when training a hound LP: I will let you know as soon as she finally gets down!! Fingers crossed it will be eventually -

Thanks JeffnCel, that is what I have been doing I just don't think it has 'clicked' yet. I might try getting her to pre-empt it, LP! Thanks for the tip. We definately take lots of breaks in my house, if you get what I mean :D It has taken months to teach stand, that is the other command she will not do on voice (but will with hand signal). I will have to work on that too, she still won't hold a stand for very long either. But we will get there.....eventually -
How Does Your Club Teach The Drop / Down?

Just wanted to ask quickly, how does everyone teach the dog to down on voice command only? Daisy responds excellently to hand signals, but she does not respond as well to voice commands. One of the requirements at our club is that to be promoted to the next class the dog needs to understand both voice and hand signals. For the life of me I cannot get daisy to respond to "down" purely on voice command! She will do sit, heel, stay and come on voice but not down. -

Pretty much all of the above (LOL). Daisy was taught down from luring with a piece of food, originally from the sit position, standing still. Now she does down on a hand signal on the move and from a stand. -
The dog will not "outgrow" the problem, he will keep displaying this behaviour until you teach him in the right way that it is not on. Obedience training is not something you do when your dog develops a behavioural problem, or something you start once a problem gets out of hand - it is something you should be doing from the day you bring your puppy home. I'm actually a little bit shocked at your attitude towards training your dog. Do a quick search of training clubs in your area, they are generally cheap and on once a week. It is something you can get the kids involved in and will give your puppy some guidance and structure - and mental stimulation. It might just teach him some good manners, too.

Erny that is wonderful feedback I was on Victoria Stilwell's (UK trainer from It's me or the dog) training forum last week and was flabbergasted at the mods on her site and how they shot down any mention of negative training methods or tools.... i.e. saying check chains are nasty, horrible, cruel and negative but recommending haltis. It seems there is no room for alternative methods it is their way or the high way! So congrats to the trainers on DOL

It is expensive but with a high quality brand like Royal Canin or Eagle pack you don't feed as much food as you do with brans like supercoat, optimum etc because it is higher in protein. I feed my dogs and cat on RC, and bones. That's all they get and they do really well on it

Home Behaviour Training
huski replied to Lil Miss LeiLani's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have heard alright things about Val Bonney but I cannot recommend her personally. I would stay FAR FAR away from any chain companies like Bark busters because they are all owned by different people and IMO you can't recommend a trainer based on a company's reputation - that and Bark Busters aren't properly trained and have no idea what they are doing. I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. I used an amazing behaviourist for my dog Micha, her name is Jane Harper. I'll PM you her details if you like ETA: Steve from K9 Force (above) recommended me to her and I am forever grateful!!!! -
I love how she looks at the camera like "see that, I'm smart " hehehe
