  1. What about natural ways of helping get rid of them? I have heard of adding garlic and kelp into their food? Anyone tried any of these? We have lots of problems with fleas, we are on the coast and with all this rain we had a couple of weeks ago it just got worse. We also had a problem with fleas inside a few months back that I thought I had fixed but when I bought a Dyson and vacuumed the carpet ( you should have seen what it picked up ) they became active again, so had to bomb the house again! Jack doesn't seem to have much of a problem with them, but Gizmo (RIP ;)) had soooo much trouble with them, maybe it is to do with the fact that I use advantage now and used Frontline before????
  2. Also try the hot water bottle - I know it is quite warm ATM but the puppy is used to getting heat from his litter mates. We only needed to use this for about a week and then were able to take it away. As mentioned above we used the ticking clock too!
  3. I have heard that maybe buying a piece of fake grass matting to put down where the pup is meant to go - haven't used it myself but also heard it is much easier to clean????
  4. Wait till you have to take your dog to the vet to get a pink blankie out of his bum - Then tell me how funny it is!! OMG what happened??
  5. We have been to obedience classes one on one and we are continuing to train jack at home and he has been going really well. Today when i was getting him out of his pen to take him for his walk he just went crazy, trying to steal the leash out of my hand and unfortunately grabbed my arm which is now sore, scratched and bruised, i too was told about the high pitched screach or yelp but i honestly didn't even think of it until it was over. This only happens with me???
  6. We ended up making a pen for Jack to go in whilst we aren't home...... the only thing he chews now is logs of wood....... the worst thing he chewed was the trailer attachment that goes from the boat trailer to the car, it was fixed once then he did it again, we are also just recovering some chairs that he decided to chew and he is only seven months!
  7. I just don't understand the reasoning behind it! If you know that you are going to the shops why would you take your dog with you if you are not prepared to take it out of the car? Even in an underground car park the car still can get hot - the motor has been running as well, so where does all the heat go?
  8. This is the most stupid thing I have heard all day! Never ever leave your pet in the car (same goes for children)! You also should know that in NSW you can be fined for leaving your animal in the car if someone reports you.
  9. Our trainer used devon rolls cut up, which we are continuing with at the moment, is this too fatty? We also train him at night before dinner and it seems that he is still hungry enough to eat dinner. We use pieces about the size of a 5c piece.
  10. We just got our dog registered and it was $40 for lifetime as he was desexed. We live in NSW on the South Coast. This applies to both cats and dogs and for pensioners it is free if they are desexed.
  11. we have just finished building a pen for Jack using star pickets, dog fence and chicken wire. When it was first done he literally climbed over the fence, just sat his paws on the fence and pulled himself over! It has now been fixed and he is not able to get out, the funny thing is that the fence we share with our neighbour is half the size - also made out of dog fence and chicken wire and he has not once even attempted it! The only thing I can think of is that the fence has always been there, where the pen is something we have not long introduced. Something else you could try is using lattice, as funds are a problem try your local tip, it may have a recycling shop where you can buy second hand stuff cheap.
  12. We got Jack "neutered" last wednesday. I was very suprised by the cost $144 after a 10% discount, he is 25-30kgs so I was expecting it to be much more! He was very tired when he came home - we kept him in the laundry and by the next day he was back to his old self, but, we had to keep him in the laundry till after lunch as the grass was wet (we let him out for toileting). He didn't go for a walk that day either and the vet gave us a neck thing if he paid too much attention to the stitches - he has tried a couple of times, but otherwise he had a really quick recovery, and of the vet told us too ring if there were any problems!
  13. Thanks for the all the great advice! Unfortunately I would only be guessing as to which house the dog came from as the attack happened at the rear of our houses and I have no real proof as to where it came from! My sister took him for a walk this morning ( in the other direction) and she noted that he was now acting scared from people just running past. I don't want him jumping all over people, but I don't want him to be scared of them either. I only know one person who has a dog that is quite sociable and unfortunately they are away at the moment, and living in a small town there are no obedience classes until february ( he badly needs this). Would it be worth me ringing the vet to see if they may be able to recommend someone with who we can socialise him? Or do I not bother them with something like this ( they are probably really busy)?
  14. We have a 6mth old retreiver x named Jack. My OH and 9yr old were taking him for a walk yesterday ( he was leashed) when another dog who had escaped from his yard tried to attack him. It was very distressing, my 9yr old came home in tears, but thankfully Jack was ok. Apparently when this other dog tried to attack Jack wasn't trying to get away and was growling and standing his ground ( he is a very BIG 6 MO). We didn't take our pup to puppy pre-school and the first time he had seen another dog since leaving the litter he tried to run in the other direction ( it was a maltese (fenced) and was quite funny at the time to see a dog 4 times the size running away scared). Why did he react differently this time? As for the attacking dog, my OH was defending himself, the dog and my son, I was wondering what the law is, whether he could be charged with cruelty (he was using his feet and sticks to get the dog away), or whether he was trying to defend himself and others from harm ( as far as I know the other dog was not injured in any way and the owners were also quite aggressive towards the dog to stop him attacking). To be honest I am quite angry ( I won't swear!) This dog is capable of hurting not just other animals but humans too, and I am quite angry with the owners, the dog has obviously learnt the wrong things. Who do you report this too? Any suggestions/opinions/comments would be great! BTW he didn't get to go for a walk today, and I feel bad, but there is no way I am going without my OH!
  15. That is the funniest thing I have heard all day!
  16. What is this? Got the letter this week from vet saying my pup is now old enough to be desexed ( 6mths). The main thing I am worried about is that he is so active! Do I need to put him in the laundry so he rests or is it ok to put him outside? I will not be getting him done for a few weeks due to christmas and I am not worried about the cost as if they are desexed it is also much cheaper to get them registered!
  17. I have been having lots of problems with the clothes line, not just when they are hanging but when I am putting them out, he steals them from the basket. My OH also accidently left a basketful of clean washing outside which I didn't remember until the morning, when I walked out someone had made themselves quite a comfy bed on them and looked at me like somehow it was my fault! He also peed al over the old lounge out the back which he has now claimed! He also helps himself quite often to the wood pile, which i then find all scattered around the yard. I also bought him toys, which he proceeded to bite the stuffing out of and hid them under the shed that I haven't seen since!
  18. These are great ideas, but how do you know if you are feeding them enough? Jack gets two cups of dry in the morning, unless I have chicken necks, then it is one with about 5-6 necks, then in the afternoon/evening he gets a cup of dry and either mince or some lamb offcuts and sometimes a half a can of puppy food. He will be quite a big dog and I am going off what it says on the puppy can. Is it enough? he seems to chew alot on sticks and things ( like my washing at the mo)!
  19. We have had Sandy ( think garfield) for nearly nine years, he used to belt our Gizmo ( maltese, let her R.I.P) until she started giving it back, we now have Jack and he knows sandy is boss, even though he weighs more than two times Sandy, anyway the other day the funniest thing happened. Jack is quite a big dog, so his time inside is extremely limited, whereas sandy is inside all the time, well we could hear Jack barking (very rare occurance) and we ignored it for a little bit but it kept going so I got up and looked out the lounge room window to see what the problem was! Well here sandy was sitting behind the curtains at the window, obviously saying to jack "ha, Ha, I am inside and your'e not!" and Jack was barking at him, it was the funniest thing. Another time I had Jacks attention at the kitchen window and i could see sandy slinking through the back yard watching him, obviously so he didn' t get caught, they are the funniest pair! But I don't think will ever share food or a bed together, lol
