  1. Hypothetically though, if people didn't donate you couldn't cover the bill. So essentially you were taking a gamble that others would cover her vet fees. What if they didn't, did you have a contingency plan? Rescue run on emotion burns out fairly quickly. Cynthia, I asked a basic question, can you please point out where I called anyone dumb?
  2. Compassion doesn't pay the vet bills, good luck, I hope she goes ok.
  3. Someone has to say it, why did you pull a very ill dog from being PTS when you don't have the funds for vet care. Why not pull a healthy dog from the needle? I feel really bad for her but can't understand it.
  4. As I am not a mind reader I was responding to what you posted. I try to read your posts, and sometimes comment on the bits I understand. You wrote it
  5. Again, you are assuming that the other dog will act appropriately to Penny's signals that she is submitting, do you not realise that some dogs ignore those signals and attack anyway? It might sound very noble to say I trust my dog to sort it out, but the reality is that there are times you need to protect your dog, or she will get attacked. It is a matter of time from what I can decipher from your posts.
  6. Yes, those are called "wild dogs". When you take your dog to the local dog park and some aggressive out of control larger dog attacks yours you might listen to the trainers on here. A lot of dogs do not have the wiring of their wild ancestors and do not obey the social behaviours such as stop attacking a submitting dog, but I guess your dogs will learn the hard way for you. Yes I have dogs, that is why I joined all those years ago, and you know what, despite the fact I have a decent amount of experience with canine cognition I always listen to the trainers on here as I know they have considerable experience that can compliment mine. I know you have pointed out other people's typos before, so thought you might want to know, genuninely is actually incorrect, it is genuinely. Thought you might appreciate the help.
  7. Whoa there Nelly, please tell me you are joking. Anecdotes are useful to generate ideas for testable hypotheses, but never can be used as evidence to support an argument. You can't seriously expect other scientists to take anecdotes seriously, they are the reason we have strictly controlled experiments, because anecdotes are useless. I am fanatical about methods, and right now my brain is hurting. Glad I didn't get my degree at your uni. :shakehead:
  8. What I posted is based on all the comparative and evolution literature on dogs, not just one paper, I read about the topic extensively when I was working on dog cognition and lecturing on it. It is the general consensus of the people in this field, based on some very good evidence. Sorry, can't comment on the rest of your posts, I find it hard to understand them
  9. Could be because you don't know where the line is between species and what a general learning concept is. The zoologists I know who do cross species comparisons always understand the severe limitations of using principles applied broadly. As I do comparative work I am acutely aware of the issues that arise when looking at the same topics across species. You could learn a lot by forgetting what you think you know and listening to K9 force. Edited to add for those who listen. Domestic dogs have exchanged a lot of their ability to solve problems with the opportunity to live closely with humans. Wolves will never look back to a human during experiments when confronted with a difficult problem. Dogs will try, then look back to the owner to fix it. Domestic dogs have co-evolved with humans, they think differently to wild animals and do not have the same skills their wild ancestors have. It is unfair to them to expect them to perform the way wolves do. They look to us to protect them, it is what they are now.
  10. That really sucks LC, I am sorry you lost Ruby.
  11. I can't believe it has to be explained to people how it does more damage to the fight against BSL when a dog that is a RB attacks and the owner hasn't complied with the law. The best way to fight it is to show these dogs are just dogs, but I guess it is a lost battle judging by the fact there are some many pitbull owners who can't think about anyone but themselves.
  12. Mind Your Own Business. Would you be saying this if it were your dog that was attacked in it's own yard? Have you ever had an incident with a dog that might have been prevented if someone had taken action earlier? I had a dog that had his ear torn off through the fence from the neighbour's dog. I learnt after this that the same dog had ripped the leg off a foxie, also through the fence, I REALLY wish someone hadn't had minded their own business and had reported this dog as mine might not have had to go through what he did.
  13. Yes, would be better to name their club Medium Sized Short haired Dog Club.
  14. I thought you were one of those that were in the camp that believed that one of the problems with BSL is that ranger training is woefully inadequate, and that dogs that are in no way pitbull are misidentified. So you think rangers are better at dog ID now then?
  15. That is why he would have been forced to, because on his own he didn't care and the other dog and owner paid the price. If he had to comply with RB legislation the dog wouldn't be escaping. He has just added fuel to the fire, how does this show people these dogs aren't monsters? WOW...that one line just put me WAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY offside! these dogs are NOT monsters, and lines like that help NO ONE! ANY dog, bred, raised to hunt, left in suburbia ,could be a danger unless properly contained, and even then..questionable.. I have known a few people to label their dog a pit when it was just a cross of many sorts.. Why is it a mutt till proven otherwise with papers ,and a pit till proven otherwise.... Not sure how good your reading comprehension is, but I said it was important to show people these dogs aren't monsters. If you don't realise by now that is what the general public think when it comes to pitbulls you need to get out more. How did you think that BSL got passed if ignorant people don't think these dogs are child eating monsters? Joe public may read your statement and think you're in agreeance.. comprehension is fine thanks! If Joe Public reads my post they would see exactly what I said, "He has just added fuel to the fire, how does this show people these dogs aren't monsters?". Bolded it to make it easier for you.

  17. One breach, he gets reported and fined or dog removed, I don't know how many chances they they get specifically. The consequences ensure compliance, even if it takes him being reported.

  19. \I would bet my left knacker that warley knows a pitbull better than the rangers do. Actually, if the dog was contained in the correct fencing then this wouldn't have happened. Why is it so hard to understand the ramifications with each attack. There is a knee jerk reaction every time a pitbull or pit cross or similar is involved in an attack, the laws get worse because those who don't understand deed not breed use it as ammo.
  20. The best way to assess preference that I am aware of is to incorporate consumer demand theory. If you assign a cost to a resource you can then determine if that resource is a necessity or a luxury, it is called price elasticity of demand in human microeconomics. As spotty has said, simple preference tests aren't adequate as they fail to take into account motivation or other things such as the animal may simply pick the least aversive option. I've just finished my review chapter on choice and control research so it is all fresh in my mind.
  21. Tell me about it, subject of my faeces, oops I mean thesis.
  22. There are other zoologists here (and people with other degrees), but 99% of posts are irrelevant to zoology so no need to keep reiterating it or bringing it up in posts or putting it under an avatar. You can take that as advice on why you think you have problems, or not.
  23. Have you considered that some of the people who have disagreed with you might have done so because, now wait for it, you were wrong? I pointed out things I didn't agree on based on what I know from uni, reading literature and my own research. When you put your opinion out there based on your profession you better believe that you will be called on it if it is incorrect or unclear. You know why, because when you are putting forward an argument and use your degree as back up you have an extra responsibility to be factual because some people take that as gospel. DOL is nothing compared to how your work is challenged as an academic, but you should know that, right? That aside, I don't agree with your ideas on dominance, I am adult enough to agree with people I don't like if we have the same ideas and have done so many times here, maybe time to get over it
