  1. Hi AkitaOwner Angus is a great dane. I would love to add photos but I am not sure how. Can you help? He is a beautiful silver fawn colour - I think the proper term is Blue Fawn so his face & ears is a bluey silver instead of black. He has ice blue eyes. He is 11 weeks, weighs 12kg and is up to my knee already! Toilet training is pretty much sorted while I am at home. He wakes me at around 4am (after 11pm bedtime) and that is it - I then take him outside when I wake at 6. When he was sleeping on the bed (yes I know...) he held his bladder as long as from 11pm to 8.30am and even then I had to coax him off the bed to go outside! The 4am has only started since I have enforced sleeping on his bed on the floor. I have used a pee pad again now and shown him it and done the normal toilet routine. I use a pee pad in the backyard to delineate the area he is to use so it is a sight he recognises.
  2. Bugger - there was too many connections and I lost my post! Pitty and Poodle - I have considered a crate however while I see the merits they are not an avenue I want to go down. None of our family dogs ever had them nor anyone else I know. My main reason though is because of the impending size of Angus. The crate I would need would be about half the size of the room he is in during the day! I do have a very secure escape proof yard however there is no adequate shelter for him (or a kennel) and it is all hard surfaces (concrete and riverstones). Everything I have read (and been told by 2 dane owners) is that danes are best not to be left outside especially because of their body fat ratio. Once he is fully trained he will have full run of the house which means he will be able to access my side courtyard which is 1m x 5m which is where he will toilet. His outside training is not otherwise being affected by being confined during the day - I have had no puddles inside (except at 4am when it was too far!) for 3 days and he goes on command (eventually!) I am away for about 8 hours a day (and yes I am well aware of the debates on this forum re having a puppy and working all day) - my neighbour said he makes noise for about 5 mins after I leave and that is it. I waited several houses down this morning and it took him 10 mins after I left to make any noise. She peeked in the window later and he was sound asleep. A student I know is going to come and spend some time when her timetable allows as of next week.
  3. Hi - thanks for all the helpful advice I have received - my poor neighbours must have heard nothing but Angus, go toilet, toilet, good boy for 5 days! We are about 85% of the way there - we still have problems in the morning when the trip from the bedroom to outside is just a little too far! He also does not consider his piles to be 'toilet'! Anyway - the problem is him going to the toilet on his bed. He is confined to my spare room when I go to work. He does not cry etc according to my neighbour. He is left with food, water, toys, clock and 2 off my old tshirts. His bed is the mattress off a futon bed with a mattress protector and a blanket. I also have 2 old canvas sign/banners underneath to protect. However, we I came home today he had peed at least twice and pooed once - all on the bed and then he was also sleeping on the bed (different area). How do I stop this behaviour? I have left paper down (replaced by pee mat tomorrow a I'd run out). He had also vomitted - just a small one but it was a bit disconcerting. He is otherwise a quick learner. I was foolish and let him sleep on the bed which is all well and good now but when he is 60kg....It took 10 mins and 5 times of saying Stop, Sit (which he understands) for him to settle and go to sleep on his pillows. He woke me at 4am for toilet (which he never did while up top!). I am a proud mummy today!
  4. its been less than a week and I already have 4 different pants/ shorts with tiny pieces of liver treats in my pocket, they are on top of the microwave, the Tv and the table outside! The cat has taken quite a liking to them too! :D
  5. cheerios sounds like a good idea and there are plenty of cat biscuits in the house! The spoodle used to get stuck into the cat's biscuits if he got the chance and the cat used to get into the spoodle's if the kibble was small enough! I had not thought of deducting treats from daily food allowance - very good point!
  6. Hi StaffnToller I am thinking they might be pork ones - I threw the bag out but they are in a white bag with a dog on the front and from the pet shop. I will look out for the beef ones next time. I feed Nutrience as an inteirm measure until the Royal Canin Dane food comes in. There is plain yoghurt on that some mornings and I am introducing human grade mince this week Sarah
  7. Hi Bella Milo and Oscar the Spoodle (same size, colour and weight!) used to chase each other all over the house and play rough and tumble together! I think Milo tried to start that last night but Angus just looked bewildered at a cat with the zoomies! He has tiny nails but HUGE feet! I am still not used to the fact that tasty cheese in Aus is not nearly double the price of other varieties as it is in NZ! I was actually getting a blue girl from the litter who I had named Bella but sadly she passed away before I could get her - luckily Angus was still available. I had originally chosen between him and Bella and had taken her - I think all along I was supposed to have my Angus. To the person who posted somewhere else on this forum that plain yoghurt counters the farts - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
  8. Thanks Mel Based on that I am over rewarding so I'll cut back. I only have edam cheese in the fridge - is that okay? He loves his dry food so I'll use that too. Actually - he is very food oriented which helps! On a funny note - he has been watching me stroke the cat and tries to do the same except it does not quite work when you have big clumsy paws!
  9. Hi Wondering if anyone has any other effective training treats - I am using liver treats which Angus loves however given we are doing lots of the initial training and treats are given for toilet outside, going on the lead etc - rewarding the behaviour I want - there is a resulting effect at the other end... Any suggestions welcome!
  10. I have left the full water bowl down today and it has gone without a hitch - perhaps it was the new environment and recovery after the trip to me which was causing him to gulp etc Definately a full bowl down for him now - especially today in Sydney. Thanks for your advice on this one! Much appreciated.
  11. I have finally figured it out so I thought I would post a picture of my darling. We have now had 2 days with no puddles inside!! Next we work on the piles cos they sure come big.... I took him out for breakfast this morning. My friend owns a cafe with a private courtyard out the back which has never had a dog in it. So he was popped in there with plenty of water and shade. He gave one howl and that was it. The other customers thought he was a darling. One of the waitresses (a uni student) has said she will come spend time with him during the day which he will love. It was a really great chance for me to see how he goes away from me and it showed that I do not need to fret as after a few mins he curls up and goes to sleep.
  12. Thanks Chloe - I will do - he is dying to get out into the world - I live opposite a reserve and he can hear the other dogs and kids playing and sits at the gate and watches them! I live in a terrace so have a modest size (prob 4 car lengths) backyard but typically it is half concrete (rear lane access for car) and the rest is river stone with paving steps and a terrace- Angus loves the river stones!!! However I live right opposite a sizeable reserve and have another 8 houses down at the end of the street. I also live a 10 min walk from the largest off leash dog park in Sydney which has hills, bush areas and ponds. Mind you - my friend's dog used to love the ponds - he would tear into them blindly ignoring all pleas and flop in the mud and then roll and roll....caramel spoodle became a chocolate one!
  13. Thanks - was wondering what others thought was 'normal' (if there is such a thing) as I have had it suggested from a couple of other dane owners that leaving a full water bowl can be inviting trouble (be it giant paws, gulping etc etc) I would hate to think I am dehydrating him so will give it a couple of days of having a fuller bowl available and see how he paces himself. Am not worried about how much he is peeing - this was simply used as a reference. I am not completely in the dark re looking after dogs however my experience has always been with older dogs - common feature growing up (esp german shepherds) and then until recently, a spoodle (yes I know designer breed - it was my friend's dog and I took on caring for both of them - most beautiful natured dog)
  14. Yes another question from me! I am getting the hang of being owned by Angus (as opposed to serving the cat!) I restrict Angus' water consumption to stop him gulping as he is a high risk breed for bloat (dane). He is currently 11 weeks old and is at 12kg. I feed him Nutrience Giant Puppy food along with fresh mince every couple of days and plain yoghurt. He is generally peeing 6-8 times a day. When I put water down he generally drinks it all and sometimes looks for more - when he asks I generally give him some more. I know it is a difficult question but how much water on average does a dog drink or need in a day. I am in inner Sydney and have upped the water with this hotter weather. Thanks in advance!
  15. I am taking Angus to puppy pre-school next week. I am one week behind the class due to the timing. The class is held at a vet clinic and by an experienced dog trainer. Emphasis is placed on training the owners. I completely trust my vet as the clinic is associated with the university and thus has a vast experience base to draw upon. As Angus is a giant breed - if I waited until past 14 weeks he would too big for the other puppies and I would not be too popular if he put his paw down on a little maltese or something. He is 11 weeks now and already weighs 12kg! He gains on average 2 kgs per week... Due to his size, it is very important I get him socialised and trained early. I appreciate that there is a risk before the vaccination course is completed but it's a bit hard to pop 12kg under your arm and carry them about!
  16. We had a massive step forward today! We will ignore the one on the bedroom floor as soon as he got up - not sure how to deal with this as he is upstairs at night and the other one on his pillow upstairs! Next trip I predicted and we went outside and he went with very little prompting. I went out and left him shut in his bedroom (mattress, water, toys, kong and fan) and when I was out he went on the pee pad. I took him out again earlier and we had 20 mins with no action so I came inside and filled his water bowl, he drank that and then started to pee on his bed which I stopped. I took him outside for 15 mins to finish but he just decided to have a snooze instead. I went inside to clean up the previous incident and turned around to see him going outside and going to the toilet all by himself!!!! Okay maybe it is babystep given the other 2 incidents but it shows he is learning! Because he is under house arrest I have been taking him out into the back lane way for 5 mins at a time on the lead to get him used to the lead - I have never seen another dog in the laneway and all the dogs nearby (there are a few) are all vaccinated (having spoken to owners). He is getting used to the lead and is not so resistant now. He sometimes likes to walk in between my legs which makes it difficult!
  17. I was just coming on to post a question on this very topic. I have a 10 week male dane who I only got this week and today the humping has started. There are 2 ways - one is climbing on to me and the humping motion. The other is a tad more delicate - he follows behind me when I walk and sticks his nose in my crotch and kinda squat humps. Thank goodness he is under house arrest until the end of the vacicnation course otherwise that may be a little embarrasing if he does it to other people in public. I read the comments re being top dog. He was the second smallest in a litter of 11. I have no other dogs - only a cat.
  18. I woke him up at 5am this morning (when the cat woke me) and carried him downstairs and outside to pee as he was very reluctant to get out of bed. We were outside for 15 mins with nothing. I went inside to go to the toilet and get some insect spray as the mosquitos were mauling me - blow me down, I was on the toilet and he squattered right there in front of me and peed - I was not in a position to usher him outside! Otherwise the wee (no pun intended) darling seems okay to go from 11pm to 6am without a pee stop. I think the breeder set this routine as they were shut up at night and let out again in the morning and peed on release. At least I am getting sleep!
  19. Oh yes - we have the farts - oh dear lord they are bad!
  20. We had a break through!!! He woke up after his post dinner nap and so I took him outside and wandered around the backyard for a good half an hour. I knew he wanted to go as he was chewing on my pants leg and then came up to the back door several times (and barke at his own reflection!). Nothing was happening so I got one of his pee pads and put it outside and what do you know...he peed! I lavished the praise and the treats and I think he got the idea! Added - oh it was a great breakthrough - as I was typing this post he went out the side door to the tiny courtyard, (typical terrace) and pooed there. This is where he will be going once he is home during the day and has the run of the house (not for a little while based on the pile beside me of things not to steal and chew!) CavNrott - I was not meaning the people here re 5 people etc - I was referring to all the reading I have done on a number of sources. Trust me I appreciate what I have been told especially as I have put it into practice and it worked! PS Thx Dax - good idea!
  21. Thanks Daxhound I may invest in one of those chair lifts for the stairs for him LOL - he is 11kg already!
  22. Next time take Angus to the loo with you or lock him outside - pups have absolutely no sense of timing Trust me...he is just the wrong height to take to the bathroom with him....laugh: I was lucky last night - he went to bed with me at around 11pm and hoped up at 5.30am again when I got up and went straight to the toilet on the bedroom floor LOL! He did not want to get at 3.30 when I got up. PHEW...I might change his name to smelly bum!!
  23. Trust me - I am being vigilant - when he went on his bed, I myself had taken 2 mins out to go to the bathroom myself. I am not expecting him not to have accidents - quite the opposite but want to start instilling the right behaviours from the start rather than indulging him for the first few days because he is new. Please - I am seeking some advice here - not to be criticised - I am trying my best here but am getting confused by myself as for every 5 people that say one thing, another 5 say the opposite and I just want to make sure I am doing the best thing for him Him...who is currently stretched out beside me with his head resting on my thigh and corner of the laptop!
  24. Thanks! I did get some advice but it is hard because he is in a different environment than he was with the breeder. He has just full on peed on his bed - I suppose it is one way of making sure he will not have to sleep in it tonight! My intention with the pee pads is that they are only a very short term solution before I can get him to go outside automatically. I had been going to move them closer and closer to the door until it was outside.
  25. Hi again I really do not know how to make this toilet training thing work and have actually been close to tears. Angus is a 9.5 week dane who I got yesterday. He pees a lot! He was brought up rural so used to go outside when playing. I have those pee pads which he has used a couple of times (for which he is praised and treated) but the rest of the time it is called pick a spot on the floor (thankfully I have floor boards). This last time, he started to go on his bed and I ended up raising my voice at him and saying no - which I know is not good as it confuses them and makes them think peeing is bad. He can come and go outside and does this. I take him outisde after eating or waking up but he doesn't do anything. I am trying to use the word 'toilet'as much as I can. He does not give off warning signs that I can see. This latest time I thought he was wanting to go so showed him the pads and said toilet Angus but no... I was going to add a photo of 266KB but it told me it is too big - any other ideas?
