  1. Hi Everyone, Grover stepped on glass today. I took him to the vet as there was blood everywhere and I was unsure as to whether there was glass in it. They irrigated and flushed it and then put powder on it (anti bacterial or antibiotic) and wrapped it. My question is- would you take him back to the vet to have it removed in five days (as the vet suggested) or just remove it yourself? It was not a serious wound- it was like a slice. What do you think?
  2. Don't worry- the first six months we had Grover were pretty awful- it gets better as you get more and more issues sorted.
  3. Well - if it is going to be a couple of months before you see a trainer then you need a tool. If you have one booked soon- then you might as well wait for them. A lady at my club used the easy walk harness and it seemed to help her- if you are worried about the head snapping thing. I use a sporn harness (as I have to use a harness for Grover's health). They seem ok- can't be any worse from what you are describing.
  4. What about some other tool while your waiting for the trainer- like a gentle leader?
  5. I think if you go into a pet shop to buy equipment, a responsible staff member will refer to a trainer if that's a more appropriate solution than buying a quick fix device. People walk into pet shops wanting miracle cures. Staff with a dog's welfare in mind will refer to trainers if that's what is needed. Case in point today. Owner of one year old "spoodle" (as yet not successfully toilet trained ) who wanted a citronella collar because her dog barks at people walking past the window. Dog has never attended training, chews everything and mouths the 4 year old. Does the dog need a collar or does the owner need education? I know what you mean and I understand what is right but I also know the general buying public. Also, why would I listen to someone in a pet shop- their usually fifteen year old girls. (Obviously not in the case of the OP) but you know the general age of staff of for example PP. Also, there is a problem with referring to trainers- do you know how hard it is to refer to a successful and reputable trainer? What's to stop staff referring one for their own gain, like a comission? How do you judge a sucessfuk trainer? How does person A or B? Not everyone lives on DOL.
  6. Gayle K is your point that the OP was asking what equipment to refer to customers? Because having read through the thread- if this is your point then I agree. If you go into a pet shop to buy equipment- you aren't asking to be referred to a trainer.
  7. Does he make a sound (called stridor) when he runs around? Stridor is a heaving sound when they breathe- it mean respiratory distress.
  8. i was just looking for ways to motivate during heeling. As food just seems to be luring and I think the original topic was for "Training in Drive" ? Would that be able to be covered as well- or are behavioural problems covered in training in drive I don't want to distract from other's, more important needs.
  9. Thanks. People might need an estimate of the cost before they commit- so they roughly know how much to allocate at this time of year. What do you think?
  10. You just can't go wrong with Kathy, she is brilliant!
  11. Will you just start a new thread when you have confirm a visit Meriment? I am looking forward to learning a new form of motivation. Do you think it would be a weekend? (Sorry for the questions-just interested)
  12. Sounds interesting- put me down if it would be a weekend.
  13. I spoke to Hortie- and she seems to think the vet was right- KC- due to the prevalence in our areas (we live W.A.) maybe seek a second opinion. I have before and was sent away very happy. Maybe you could do that?
  14. It just makes sense what you say Lilli. It just seems so hard to enforce with visitors especially older family members - aarggh! You tell and tell them- turn your back and bam- they just fed the dog from the table. So, now dog goes outside when eating. Great thoughts to ponder Lilli. Always like reading your posts.
  15. Wow Lilli- is that just because of your breed or do you think every multiple dog household should be like that? It sounds like it makes sense- just hard to enforce with some visitors (to our house I mean)
  16. I think that this has been the best outcome for a difficult situation. Sometimes, if you haven't been around puppies- you have no idea of the work involved and really do need guidance from the breeder. It's a shame but better for the family and the puppy.
  17. Yes- i would be a tad shocked too- but I think you're right for looking at the other side of it. Now- we are both going to go to bed early tonight aren't we? no staying up reading DOL past 10.30- to get that sleep cycle
  18. mmmhmm- i hear your pain! also you just had ebony there getting her hips checked well- i think your vet sounds good from what you told me- just that a big bill to find nothing is a shock.
  19. hmmm- well I guess it is peace of mind. What do you think about shopping around for vets now?
  20. What a strange situation Hortie! What do you think about the vets explanation?
  21. Sorry to hear that FM what were the symptoms?
  22. Well done Erny- thanks for that insight. Of course, considering his background- he probably had to lay in it, like some people keep their stock. They grow up knowing no differently. Looks like Chester needs a lot of time to normalize him. Poor lady and poor Chester.
  23. oh my God! that poor person- sorry W.A ite here, but I send sympathy.
