  1. I think this is where the misperception comes from, it's partly true. But it doesn't mean that no dog will ever attack a puppy, and in nature there are many examples across different species. A lesson I learned yesterday... I will certainly be more aware of it now..
  2. Because a puppy poses no threat? They are typically submissive. Have puppy licence? The question is why would a dog attack a puppy. This is what I thought - why I was shocked to see a grown dog attack a pup.. I know I have read about it on here before but I had never seen it, so was quite shocked at the nature of the attack - the shaking and pushing the pup into the ground. It was really horrible to watch and the owners really did not know what to do. Poor buggers just kept trying to pick puppy up to save him but the other dog would not let go.. It was totally unprovoked by the pup. The other dog was on the other side of the park to the pup... I get that some dogs don't like other dogs and have 'issues' but I had honestly never seen a puppy treated like this before by any dog (even my cranky old stafford who didn't like other dogs would tolerate a pup in his face)...
  3. That is what this baby did - down on his belly... I always thought that pups had sort of a right of passage where grown dogs were concerned and they didn't attack them.. It is just what we were raised to believe.. Then again, times have changed so much as have training methods... I have to admit, I was totally shocked that it happened (because of my beliefs, which were totally wrong)...
  4. My old stafford was my study buddy - he listened to me for 4 years going over notes before tests, reading out assignments to see if they made sense.. He was a very patient study buddy - he even fell asleep during some of our study sessions
  5. Hard to avoid them when they slip their collar and make a beeline for your dog There was a baby whippet at one of the dog parks last weekend! Lets hope it stays in one piece. All it has to be is bowled at speed for a broken leg. A dog that slipped its collar and made a beeline for any of my dogs would be airborne shortly afterwards. I have no qualms about booting dogs to keep mine safe.. none at all. We had a baby Iggy up at this rougher park the other day - the owner picked him up and he wriggled the whole time to get down and play but there were bigger dogs there that would have made it impossible.. Darn but he was so very cute though..
  6. Maybe that is why our experiences have been positive - we are usually only there with dogs we know. We have sort of a standing meeting at one of the local dog parks and it us usually the same group there at the same time each Sunday... We have about 6-8 dogs that seem to hang together and play ball together and they all get along really well. I have only just started going to this particular dog park and it does seem to have less attentive dog owners (they sit and chat while the dogs play) - whereas at the other park that we usually go to all the dog owners are up and with the dogs all the time (ball throwing etc)..
  7. Isn't the whole idea to socialize the pup in the early days important I don't think taking true pup into the big dog section was very intelligent but I guess they saw a couple of schnauzers there and a decent sized staffy cross in the other side. They weren't to know the other dog was DA. I think most newish dog owners would 'assume' a dog park is a good idea... Not saying that is right. My dogs didn't get near the pup until they bought it into the section they were in and they were both very gentle with him. I did not think a grown dog would attack a pup just out of the blue like this did yesterday, that is why I asked the question. I would also like to be able to help again if this type of thing ever happened again. I hope I did the right thing giving the other dog a kick but must admit I felt terrible about it. However my main concern was for the puppy at the time. Was I right in suggesting they seek veterinary help just in case or did I overstep the. Kinds of what should or shouldn't be done... I have never had much to do with dog parks before having Ziggy as when we were younger we just walked the dogs and played on the beach etc So far our time at the dog parks has been great except for yesterday's event
  8. Helen I agree... If the owner knew the dog had issues with pups then a dog park is not the place to let it run free.. I am not going to judge her as I don't know the circumstances but I know If it was my dog and I knew it was prone to disliking puppies, I would not let it offlead at an enclosed dog park... i take my 11 month old and I am having issues with him and his recall at the moment. He is submissive but it has been pointed out here that I shouldn't let him off while his recall is not perfect... As much as I agree, it is totally fenced and he loves to run... It is just to sad to see a dog that loves to run not have a chance to play. He was having another issue being the over friendly, in your fave, I just wanna be friends with all the shy dogs but I have spent heaps of time on the leave it command and that seems to be working to get him to leave the other dogs.. We are still working on the recall with limited success (hard when he was so good a month ago and just seems to be having to much fun to respond but I realise that is the point of recall))... Sas, poor Dante... I remember I used to have dogs having a go at Ollie dog after he was diagnosed with cancer and he was never aggressive before that... All of a sudden even small dogs would walk past us and growl at him... I have the opportunity to do a dog training class that discusses behaviour and reading the behaviour of dogs and I cant wait (one of the benefits of fostering)... I have always gone on gut feelings with dogs and so far have been pretty right. Except for the most adorable, huge Labrador at the other dog park we go to.. He comes to the gate to meet us with all hackles up and teeth bared. No growling at all but the first time I saw it I thought, oh my god, I can't take Ziggy in there... His owner said he loves other dogs and is just very excited... He played with Ziggy as a pup and they still play together and he still hackles up every time we see him... Seriously every hackle from his neck to his tail all straight up..
  9. Had to google as I had never heard of them before.. Lovely looking dogs.
  10. As the heading says... At the dog park yesterday afternoon this lady turns up with her 2 dogs (I thought this breed was quite a placid type breed). The younger one of the two played lovely with Ziggy and Pippa but the older one seemed not to like Pippa so we went over to the other side of the fenced area where the puppies play. Along comes a young couple with their 3 month old pup and they look at Ziggy and PIppa and decide that the other side is better for their little one to play... Within seconds of entering the older of the 2 dogs runs across from the other side and attackers the pup. Not just a pin down, it actually grabs the poor tiny thing and starts to shake it horribly... The poor young couple were beside themselves. So I leave my 2 and go through the gates to try to help as they are picking their pup up but this other dog won't let go... I gave it a good swift kick in the side and it let go... Its owner by now comes running saying that he takes a dislike to pups (WTF)...but she does not take her dog out or put it on lead or anything. She just took it by the collar back to where she was sitting. Puppy is shaking and obviously upset and we sit down, check him over and there are no serious bites just a bit of blood coming from up near his ear. I suggested they get him checked by a vet to be sure as he might need some antibiotics.. They came and sat in with us, Ziggy and Pippa huddled around the little guy and licked him and smooched him up. Pippa, who is only 5 months old herself seemed really concerned, she would not leave the tiny pup and sat there with him sitting between her legs.... Why would a full grown dog attack a puppy? It is obviously not a normal thing to happen, surely. I thought pups had some sort of right of passage with older dogs (not that this little one did anything wrong) I am glad I listened to my gut and left that side of the park..
  11. My parents used o carry on about the excessive amount I spent on. Hold stafford when he had mast cell cancer... We spent over $20,000 in the six years after he was diagnosed.. It adds up so quickly. Sadly we all have people in our lives who just don't see our dogs the way we do.. Again I am so glad it was all clear...
  12. She was really under weight when I got her and with exercise and good food she has gained 6kg in 2 weeks.. She looks awesome now, no hip bones showing, her coat is glowing and her eyes are so much brighter. She is a much happier and healthier dog. I took her back to the vet yesterday as she had a lump on her neck and I thought it was a hematoma but turns out it was a vaccination lump... The vet was amazed at how much of a difference we made in such a short time. But that is why we do it, isn't it? :D I will get some updated pics of her and post later as we have interest in her already and she is meeting a prospective new family on Saturday.
  13. Ziggy is happy to eat a bit, play a bit, come back and eat some more.. He waits patiently for dinner to be prepared and he doesn't guts food down. He seems to prefer to take his time.. He thinks everyone should share food because he is happy to share.. It has gotten him into trouble with some of our fosters who are none to happy about sharing... The foster pup we have here, 5 month old ridgie cross?? Is a total guts and scoffs it down as fast as she can. She then goes for Zigs dinner which he is happy to share...
  14. Good news and $190 is cheap for complete peace of mind...
  15. Pippa pocket pup is off to meet a new family on Saturday.. They saw her on the ARF website and think she will be perfect... They also have another dog, so she would have a big brother or sister to play with...
  16. It is so nice to see a good news story these days
  17. Huh, I never thought of using scented nappy bags.. I might get some and give it them a try. I usually buy at the cheap shops or Woolies or Coles if I remember them in the shopping... The blue ones (from coles and woolies) seem to be much thicker than the green ones at the cheap shop..
  18. How cool is this... Story Australia’s first corgi SES tracking dog has earned praise from the Queen. With her ears rigidly vertical and her tail cocked to attention, there’s something about Manhon that says, “Every inch of me is ready for action.” “I purchased her sight unseen,” says SES volunteer Glenys Nottle, from Albany, WA, of the four-year-old dog that has just qualified as the first corgi tracking dog in the State Emergency Service anywhere in Australia. What the pooch lacks in size she makes up for with smarts. In one recent challenge, Manhon tracked a scent for five kilometres! “She may be only 25cm tall, but Manhon’s nose does all the talking,” winks Glenys. So grand are Manhon’s achievements, she has received a letter of praise from the greatest corgi lover of them all, the Queen. Glenys has spent more than 400 hours training her sniffer dog, when many said it couldn’t be done. “She’s dynamite in the orange rescue jacket, but not so clever in other areas,” laughs Glenys. “She tries to trick you into thinking she’s finished eating by burying her food or dragging a tea towel over it… but I love her anyway.”
  19. I will add in heaps of stuff from Ollie's thread when I have some time.. This might also be a good one to get pinned in this section, maybe ask Troy?
  20. Only the dog, gods know but he is awfully cute... He is going to he a decent size looking at those paws...
  21. Glad you went back and they aspirated. Let us know you go.. Good luck
  22. He is off lead to have a good run and play at the enclosed dog park... This behaviour has only just started... He is removed as soon as I get him, if he annoys another dog... I would not want someone's dog doing it to my dog and I thought I was doing the right thing by trying again when he appeared to have picked up his manners again at home and when we first got to the park... The other day, I had him on lead at the park at first and he was really good... He seems to lose focus when there is another dog around... I was just after some ideas on how to get his focus back on me... I had tried treats, toys and calling him but it didn't work the other day... However be came back the first time I called him today.. Today he was really good, he came back to me when I called him most times, there was once when I had to call him a few times but he did come back.. I would love perfect recall with him... I know it is all time and training. The difference today being went for a really good walk and did some training (sits, stays) before we went to the park...
  23. Über cute... Be careful fostering is addictive.
  24. It adds up so quickly... From memory I think his chemo alone was about $8K.. Then all the holistic supplements and the costs of tests... Blood tests every week to make sure his cell count was high enough to have chemo that week... Then full blood counts every couple of months to make sure he was doing OK with it all.. It sounds like a lot and it is a big commitment...
