  1. One of the great things that happens as a result of the MDBA Dog Owners Choice Awards is that we hear about things people are doing in the dog world which we don't get a chance to know ordinarily. Dxenion is doing a pretty hard slog of it in trying to have legislation changed to help people who are disabled and need assistance dogs. Due to the way current laws are Dany-el [ Dxenion] is unable to travel interstate to Brisbane to attend the awards .She needs donations to keep going and stand a chance at attaining her goal in having laws changed so I will allow her to come in here and tell you all about what she is doing - although Im pretty sure she will be ticked off about me putting the spot light on her .
  2. I had a beagle bitch who ALWAYS lost a puppy or two like this and went on to have the rest of the puppies on the due date - without a C section. The first time I was like you are now but in her next three litters just shrugged it off and said there she goes again. Its only one class of ABs which will damage the teeth and they are unlikely to be used for this type of thing. I'm not sure I agree with your vet re not giving AB's but so be it .Id be going for the protexin. I think you're going to be O.K. and if you can wait until her temp drops and you are sure she is in early stages of starting labour before you C section you have a greater chance of getting the puppies through. The hormones which are released as the bitch goes into labour are better left to do their job so dont be in too much of a hurry to run at it. You can make oxygen tents - Ive used a plastic sponge cake cone thingy - you know those plastic things that go over cakes you buy at a store to keep em fresh, cut a small hole in the rim to insert an oxygen tube.It works great if you get one that's a bit slow to start and is a bit blue and is good to see the colour change to pink but by the time you get them home that should be all over as you would hope what ever is needed to help them survive is provided at the vet post op. If they are premmy and can suck a premmy bottle teat they can suck Mum which is much preferable so Id be making sure that you have the equipment you need to tube feed in case you need it. In your position right now Id be making sure I do as much as I could to ensure her immune system is the best it can be. Anything at all you can think of which will help to be sure she has the right nutrients, no stress and she spends her last two weeks in the lap of luxury is a good thing.
  3. I think Kitt's post is very relevant and one that has been largely ignored in this thread. So what - that's the whole point. Some people especially breeders understand what pet quality means and that it isn't an inferior dog to any other dog in a litter they use it as a guide and they are not offended by it but unless you do know that and you have been exposed to it as breeders are then its possible - some would argue even probable that this is creating a negative view of purebred dog breeders and their dogs to the general public and as has been pointed out already it was one of the things used by you know who to tell the public they were only getting our dregs. No one is ordering anyone to change what they do its only a discussion about a potential issue which is good to talk about and consider especially as its not something that many breeders have considered before because they didn't know some people were offended by it. If its just here on this forum that's good but unless we do some research we wont know and if we don't we will simply bury our heads and says its not true. Its not about whether you need to market your pups its about a general perception of purebred dogs and their breeders. Where is the harm in considering it - what is it exactly we stand to loose if at the end of the day it turns out its better for our PR if we don't use it? Gawd, have you even read Kitt's post? She/he has posted, in their own words, as a member of the public, and they are not offended by the use of the term pet quality. The people in this thread complaining about the term pet quality don't seem to be general members of the public. I will again state that I have NEVER heard a breeder use the term pet quality in a way that sounds as if the pup is second class. No one in this thread has said they use the term in this manner. People in this thread are implying that breeders are looking down their noses and acting all snobby about the puppies that are "only" pet quality. However, there has been no evidence from the many breeders who have posted in this thread that any of them do this. This thread is getting out of hand and turning into what I see as an unnecessary argument about one of many terms that are used in the dog world. *Exits thread somewhat gracefully ;)* Yes Gawd I did even read kitts post and I can clearly see that she isn't offended but guess what - I hang out with people every day who are ordinary every day dog owners and members of the public and some of them are telling me they feel the same way that the un ordinary members of the public on this forum here feel. What makes one person's comment on this forum more valid because it may come from someone in your opinion who is who is more ordinary? We are in a war right here right now with a fight against those who would prefer we dont breed at all for public perception and anything that may raise the positives about us and our dogs is in my opinion a good thing and worth considering. What is it exactly that a breeder stands to loose if they concede that perhaps some members of the public are offended by the term and they decide to think on whether they should change that? No one is telling them they have to its a simple suggestion but it would appear that we have to insult each other and make our comments personal in order to argue for the accepted - for the sake of what? Some people are offended by the term and it is a tool they have used in the past to put us down in the media and after the 4th when the part 2 PDE is released its likely to get worse. Kitt is one general member of the public and she isn't offended - very good but that doesn't mean others are not and to pick one comment in this thread as more valid than someone else's who does feel its an issue makes little sense.

  5. I agree Crisovar, personally I find the term 'furbaby' far more offensive than 'pet quality'. but this isnt about personally - personally I'm not offended and I couldn't care less but if some people feel its better left out why cant we just listen and consider not doing it? Considering some people find the term furbaby offensive I wont use that either though I've never used either of them and Ive never heard anyone in 40 years raise that one either. Quality pets sounds good to me.
  6. Thats really the whole point though isn't it even though logically we should care less what people refer to their pups are we will still stick to what we have been doing and resist change because we do care more about what we call em. Go figure.
  7. Some members of the public feel we should sell the pups at 6 weeks and for peanuts, do we bow to that as well. For heavens sake this is just idiocy, how about we just market them all as perfect pups, will that appease the snivelling from Sheridan and co, no, probably not they will just pop up with some other petty criticism probably relating to misleading the public. Most of my enquiries come from people who ask for just a pet. Maybe they have it wrong?. To me that is the highest grade of pup there is, a lifetime pet and loved companion. Just because you get it and know what you think and mean about a pet quality pup doesn't mean the general public do. The term pet "quality" makes me feel that if people think that is a lesser description that I understand why it is and Im suggesting we shut up and listen to them and try not to use it.
  8. I have to admit I don't like the term pet quality either. Having the word quality in there - pet or show quality - does to me imply a less superior product No one is suggesting that breeders should stop grading them but if some members of the public feel this is a term which we would be better to consider not using perhaps that's something we should take on board.
  9. Nominations have now closed for this year I havent attempted to add them up yet so Ive no idea how many we have but it feels like thousands Thank you to everyone who participated in this and we will move through the nominees over the next couple of weeks.
