Microchips - Is There A National Register?
RiverStar-Aura replied to vegemite_toast's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd post my two cents. It is compulsory for all dogs microchipped in NSW to have owner details listed on the NSW Companion Animal Register. From what I understand, authorities in NSW can only access the NSW database so if your NSW registered dog goes missing in VIC, the owner might not be found. I travel a lot with my dogs and as such have them both listed on CAR (Central Animal Records) for added safety. I'd like to know I've done everything possible to help my dogs get home in the event they are ever lost/missing. -
I'm so pleased to read about Bobby's fantastic rescue. I'd read about him being in BP but hadn't checked in to hear his fate. He's looking beautiful Crickets!! I'd first heard about Skye Terriers from Black Beauty and had no idea what they looked like. Beauty was talking about the docking of tails and cutting the ears to make them pointy. They really are such beautiful dogs!!

I totally get that Alkhe -- they're not suited because of their coats in cold climates. That being said, I can't imagine someone who breeds racing greys to have them all in their house. I'd imagine that barns or something would be used. Edited to say that I could also be completely wrong too as I know very little about racing greys.

It's amazing how the term "outside dog" seems to translate to "no human contact". My two dogs live outside 100% of the time and aren't starved for love and do just fine.

I'm just loving all the comments after the article: WTFBBQ?!

Weight Reduction Dry Food.
RiverStar-Aura replied to pebbles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use the Royal Canin Light on my cat and she's dropped from 5.8 kilos to a lovely 4.6 kilos and kept the weight off. Cats are a bit harder to diet IMO thought! I'd just be looking at using fillers in the dog food rather than going to the Light option: grated carrot, pumpkin even boiled white rice. -
I thought that the toy breeds were bred to be lap dogs/companions therefore wouldn't thrive being outside. A Miniature Schnauzer might be compatible, however, I don't know anything of the breed or of their outdoor suitability only that the ones I've met are friendly little buggers!!

There's a gorgeous black Schipp at my dog park who is definitely spunky!! He's such a friendly, happy go lucky boy and has the sweetest temperament. He bounds around rather like a fox and I love watching his exuberance!! :D

I always love to recommend the Aussie Terrier because they are a very hardy and sturdy dog. It depends on what size they're after as Aussies are a smallish dog (compared to Labs for example) but they really are personality plus!! They do fine outside but love indoors too and are fantastically loyal to their family. Aussies are very friendly to all people, but do love their family the most! They're good watch dogs, require once weekly brushing and monthly washing if that. They don't shed which is also a plus. Being a terrier they do have a stubborn streak and require a strict leader so they know who's boss. They are still easy to train and you'll end up with the best family dog ever!!! Someone else suggested a Beagle and after having my beagle cross boy Zeus I agree. They do require a bit more hard work training wise as their sniffer nose can be hard to deal with. Beagles though are such a lovable breed too!! Also one I'd recommend and is a bit bigger than the Aussie Terrier.

You're also in the perfect position to start developing a lovely relationship with your chosen breeder too. As you don't want a pup for a year or two, start going out to dog shows and talking to people who breed and show Berners. They are a lovely dog and I wish you all the best. Definitely follow up your emails because as others have said, they might be filed away in a "to reply to" folder.

Tcik Flea Teatments Whats Working Atm.

If you're headed to Berry I'd suggest using Advantix as your tick prevention. The Illawarra is a tick breeding ground and I prefer Advantix over Frontline. It's also water fast so your guys should be safe. Apply maybe 3 days before you leave. It's also safe for your 13 week old puppy as it can be used on pups from 7 weeks. -
What Shampoo Do You Use And Why?
RiverStar-Aura replied to skyehaven's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use Bio Groom Wiry Coat on my terrier Kirah's coat and I use anything on Zeus's coat -- he's a short coated cross breed so nothing really bothers him. I currently have FuzzYard Super Shine tangerine and rosemary and the Sensitive Skin oatmeal and mandarin because they both smell divine!! -
I edited my photo for my Christmas cards. Hope you all enjoy! :D

I don't know if he can learn. He's such a bloody princess!! The way he carries on I think he thinks he's dying ... My poor melodramatic boy!

Does anyone else's dogs get bindis in their paws? My boy Zeus is a horrible princess regarding bindis -- he lifts the leg up and limps around to the point where I think he's done a serious injury. Since his bad allergic reaction to a bee sting last year -- he swelled up and passed out -- I'm highly wary of any paw injury because that's where he got stung. Kirah on the other hand, has never had a bindi caught in her paw and they run around the same grass patches. Would this be because one has softer pads than the other? What do you do to prevent bindis? I don't think socks are a viable option somehow.

Keep fighting them Donatella -- they'll get jack of it soon. The ombudsman is also a fantastic idea. I think like all insurance you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. My preference is to have a separate bank account too -- I get bonus interest for not tapping into it. In the event of some serious specialist surgery, I'm lucky that my mum and brothers would help me out if I needed it.

I'm so glad for the outcome of this situation Cougar. I love cats as much as dogs and I get distressed over the amount of them I see wandering our streets, climbing in and out of drains and gutters etc. My cat is allowed outside unsupervised but she's been trained to not leave our backyard. She's quite content to potter around in our back gardens and has never once escaped. I love that she doesn't need to be confined to a cat run, however, we she of the wandering type, she'd be in a run for sure. I hate roaming cats and I'd never let any of my cats add to the nuisance problem. There's even one house up the road who has their cat's bowls on their front patio and feeds them outside.

Sesame Street Introduces A New Muppet Character

Aww! What a cute dog!! -
Wow!! Way to come out guns a blazing and defensive! I wouldn't recommend a SBT for a child to take soul responsibility either. As a breed, they are big galoots (even the announcer on your Crufts video called them 'the clowns of the terrier group') and would be too strong for a child to handle. Even after suggesting an Aussie Terrier, I'd prefer to see the OP work with the 3 dogs she currently has before settling on the fourth. I actually feel bad for Cinders -- why not contemplate a dog suitable for her rather than one to play with the Dobes?
-
I'd like to suggest an Aussie Terrier. These dogs are tough as nails and will match up to the play styles of the dobes and would also make good agility dogs. Not sure about lure coursing but you could look into Earth Dog with it. I'll have to get myself a YouTube account so I can post videos of just how tough Aussies are!!

Here's my two, which I took yesterday. I may have to do another set though because a certain Mister Zeusling ruined their sitting poses with his lipstick and Kirah's eye is weeping quite a lot Oh and the flash ruined the visibility of their sign which reads "10 days til Christmas and we've been PAWFECT ANGELS <3 Zeus and Kirah".

Fully Blocked Tear Duct
RiverStar-Aura replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've been using the Amacin ointment twice daily and giving Kirah a face massage, which the spoiled girl loves but no change so far. She's being really good in letting me put the ointment in her eye, but that could also be due to the treats afterwards too  Will continue on this path and cross my fingers for any improvement. I don't really want to have to see a specialist. -
Teeth Scale And Clean
RiverStar-Aura replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
TD is useless with my two dogs. They swallow the pieces whole regardless of how big they are  I prefer using chicken/turkey wings. -
There's actually quite a few of these: Yorkshire, Australian Silky and English Toy Terriers (Toy Group); Boston and Tibetan Terriers (Non-Sporting/Utility Group); and Russian Black Terrier(Working Group).

My two get the heartworm injection and are wormed for everything else maybe twice a year. I live in a high tick area so Advantix fortnightly is a must -- but I slacken off over winter.
