Rotties are bloody brilliant jumpers and escape artists, which is why we have 2m fences, secured top and bottom (as Zeph bulldozers like a wombat if he finds a weakness), with lockable gates. ETA the two young ones are naked, as they play quite roughly as well as jump and tunnel, and the old girl is clothed. When we go for walks or out they line up at the front door near their collars to get dressed. It is their signal that we are going off the property. If we are just going next door or too the rubbish bins they don't have their collars on, which acts as their signal to stay close.

Stolz there are breeders who are members of state breed clubs but they do not conform to the ANKC Code of Ethics. They use the membership as a form of respectability yet continue to breed with money foremost as their motive because they know that the breed clubs have no backbone and will not take action against them. If they do get caught out and the club does take action it is usually minimal in the form of a small fine and short suspension. As GayleK said the actions of breeders, not purely their membership of various groups, are a better indication of whether they have the welfare and best interests of the breed as a priority. Breeders who have many litters a year, who are constantly moving dogs on and selling them to anybody who has the right amount of money, breeders who have nothing to do with their puppy buyers once the dogs have left their kennel and provide no support, breeders who are not prepared to take back the dogs that they breed should things go pear shaped and breeders who do not socialise, train and supervise their own dogs, including raising their litters in a home environment are not breeding for the right reasons in my opinion. They are interested in money only not the betterment, welfare or reputation of the breed.

So very true Laneka. Socialise, supervise at all times, in all settings, and train your dogs, regardless of size and breed. If you cannot put in the time, if you cannot make the commitment, if you cannot ensure that they are secure and under control at all times, get a bloody pet rock.

From what I can gather from the replies so far, most people are not necessarily wary of certain breeds, but they are concerned about the consequences to themselves, their family and dogs as a result of certain behaviours displayed by dogs. This is totally understandable and the reason why the owners of dogs that are medium to large in size need to be aware of their dogs’ behaviour at all times and the effect that inappropriate behaviour can have. Yes, it is unfair that the owners of larger dogs need to be more vigilant and responsible when it comes to behaviour, training and socialising, but it is a condition of owning a larger dog breed and something that dog owners need to accept. Big dogs can cause more damage as a result of bad behaviour, regardless of breed. If you own a breed that attracts undesirable owners, then responsible owners have a greater duty of care to that breed by ensuring their dogs are properly trained, socialised and constantly supervised, thus ensuring that their behaviour is beyond reproach at all times, not just when in public. It is most definitely the deed not the breed, but that extends to the owners as much as the dogs themselves.

Tim'sMum I totally understand your wariness after being exposed to that sort of behaviour. However it is the behaviour that changed your mind not the breed per say. Until the dog growled in incident 1 you had no problem with the breed. You handled the dog beautifully by the way by switching the dog into working mode using obedience commands Interestingly in the second incident you were not concerned about the first Rottweiler, only the two dogs exhibiting threatening behaviour. May I ask if both incidents involved a Lab, and it was the same sort of behaviour exhibited, would you be wary of Labs?

Do not beat yourself up about an accident tlc. Congratulate yourself on your calm reaction and swift action which resulted in an unharmed Tully. Your actions prevent Tully from doing any more damage and from becoming more destressed. Consequently, you were in more shock than Tully was. Dogs are amazingly resillient. We humans are the fragile ones who need the cotton wool. :D

OMG tlc I would have freaked out. Huge hugs to you. I am so glad that Tully is OK. I have two ball freaks here and the angles that Zeph gets in to catch a ball and the height makes me cringe. Super bouncy balls are banned in this house for that reason.

Kirislin, I do remember the photo but no it was not me. All breeds have good and bad dogs, just as all breeds have good and bad owners. I am more wary of areas than I am of dogs, as I know that irresponsible dog owners, with various breeds small and large, live in those streets and I will not subject my dogs to the consequences of their lack of knowlegde and care.

Zeph destuffs everything and then Dee plays with the flat toy, throwing it in the air and catching it, so when I saw the flat, no stuffing road kill toys I thought beauty I can skip the messy stage. Wrong, Zeph unstitched them so that he could kill the squeaker in them :rolleyes: And apparently any ball toy is not allowed to have extras like little feet, hands, mouths, beaks and especially tags. He chews them off straight away and eats them.
