1. I can't help wondering why ppl don't just use nice big meaty bones which would keep most dogs happy for hours, improve their teeth as well as nutrition (provided of course that they can't get at the marrow too quickly as when some butchers cut them lengthwise if you don't specify) and they're not that expensive. Some supermarkets actually sell dog bones cryopacked - large lamb leg bones with an amount of meat on the ends.
2. Hopenfox - Who had the valerian, you or the dog??? If it was the dog, wouldn't it put her to sleep? Just asking because I've got a very hyped up dog who could possibly do with something like that. Edited to add - CTD Congratulations! I wouldn't listen to anybody who detracts from your success like the lady who said you could have done better. You did brilliantly to pass each time when others take at least 2yrs. with better than average scores and, as you say, you don't go to win the ring but to have fun with your dog and obtain a pass. It's great that somebody who uses motivational methods as you do succeeded when others take years
3. Why don't you go to one of the larger independent book stores give them the author, publisher and ISBN and ask them if they will import it for you. It may take a few weeks but, in my experience, it is a tad cheaper than going to somewhere like Dogwise and paying almost as much as the book is worth for postage/handling. Just a thought!
4. WTF? E - collar, firing gun near a dog? Good grief the RSPCA has nothing better to do!
5. I have a SWF and she is as "quick as a whip"- really smart and catches on really quickly! Can teach my other dog how to hold a dumbell, do all sorts of tricks etc.. I don't think a lot of the so-called instructors at the local ob. clubs have a clue about dog behaviour. Dogs that are branded "stupid", ie a lot of sight-hounds - as we all know are bred for a different purpose to a BC or a GSD - they have brilliance in other directions eg. winning a race. They all have their expertise in different areas. Terriers dig, beagles track etc, etc.. I know that sounds simplistic but, to my mind, many dogs and handlers are brushed aside when people don't understand them. A Maltese is a smart little dog, don't let them laugh at you! Nil carborundem desperandum (Don't let the buggers grind you down!) Try using motivational methods - positive reinforcement. Go to ClickerSolutions, a Yahoo Group on the Web run by Melissa Alexander and see what they have to say, then you can go and prove all the detractors DEAD wrong! !
6. wHOO! hOO! Congrats! Just shows that ppl. who praise their dogs rather than punish them, WIN!!! and their dogs are still happy members of the family!
7. Tee Hee! Lablover you have obviously impressed them. Where do you train in we might be so bold??
8. I understand where everyone is coming from, My main concern is the dog who is trained in prey drive and, from posts to this forum, is frantic to get to the ball to the extent that the dog would bruise, bite, maul anythihng in its path! Check back along this thread please to the original poster. I may be seen as a fool but look again at the original posts, please!
9. [ I also work at a dog daycare. Plenty of the dogs there have good prey drive. Yes you sometimes have to watch that they don't accidentally grab the ball or toy out of your hand or your hand by mistake, but it is certainly not deliberate, they are not trying to hurt you!
10. I read comments of people, including myself, getting jumped on and mouthed - this is not mauling and at no time did I feel uncomfortable or unsafe. In fact I said my dogs and I were having great fun. I laugh because I find you're interpretion of this post funny, I even laughed when you called me pathetic I feel, very strongly, for the result of all this laughter!!! Children pounced upon, scratched and, in stronger terms MAULED by dogs who have been teased into prey drive are the innocent victims of ppl. such as the list bully who plants these ideas and don't follow them up in a responsible fashion. Please don't try to engage me in debate again!. I find the people on this thread repulsive!

12. I don't consider my comments "stupid"! I read several comments that said the dog mauled his handler in an attempt to get at the prey item - a ball. These dogs, as far as I was concerned, were not AQUIS dogs who, BTW, seem to be, from the picture in a paper media I saw, were trained using a choker! The dogs that were being represented were, seemingly, family pets being trained "in drive"! To my mind this is irresponsible reporting to say the very least! I may, to your feeble minds, appear stupid BUT please remember that the general public also read this list There are far too many incidences of dog attacks reported and children are the main victims.
13. Would hate to see the results if a child happened to get hold of the desired toy in the dog's presence! The mind boggles. It's a disaster waiting to happen! Well, I await the results! I can just see the headlines now! If you see it as funny, I feel very sorry for you! Have you ever seen the results of a child mauled by a dog???You are pathetic!!!Just because the list bully has had a "go" at me, doesn't make me a laughing stock! I don't value that particular person's opinion one little bit. Get over it, but, please think of the consequences of unguarded prey drive.
14. I am now entirely convinced that all this thread was thrown as a "bait" in order to promote, yet again, the wonders of the tools K9force promotes!
15. Dogs do this because they are looking for a new way to gain control of the handler, rather than the old ways of jumping on hanlders, pulling on leash, lunging etc etc which they can no longer do.... but Im sure you knew this right? No, I did not know that was right! The initial query was not directed at me, I merely jumped in to suggest that perhaps the dog was letting the handler know that it was uncomfortable in the absence of replies from others with more experience of the equipment. As with any equipment if used incorrectly there is potential to cause discomfort. I'm sure you would be first to acknowledge that fact. The initial enquiry was, I thought, directed at the experts in the use of the equipment. I get the distinct feeling that there is a concerted effort to cause a disagreeable flaming match and I'm past that. My unfortunate use of the emoticon seems to have caused everybody to become super defensive.
16. Without being seen to debate the use of the equipment, I merely wondered if it was being used incorrectly and, therefore, causing the animal discomfort. That was in the absence of any suggestions, at that time, from more than one person and, in particular, the experts in its use.
17. Have you thought that the dog might be trying to tell you something?
18. U mean i just offer once? In the morning, i got to leave at 8am and only came back at 7pm. If he dun eat, is it ok without food for 11hrs? I don't think your dog will suffer "hunger pangs" while you are away. You might, perhaps, think of freezing in an iceblock some treats to keep him busy or stuffing a rubber Kong which you would find in any pet store. You don't have to spend lots on things. Try putting some chicken necks (uncooked) in water with some fresh, lightly cooked vegetables, pop it all into a plastic container with a lid (supermarket butter containers for example) and freeze it. They get countless hours of licking pleasure to unlock the goodies. Dogs are "hard wired" (inate behaviour) to eat when food is available. In the wild dogs may not eat for several days, or more! They are natural scavengers. Beware of "overfeeding" because you could, with all the best intentions, get an obese dog resulting in health problems such as diabetes, arthritis and heart problems. My two just love Mondays at our local park because football spectators leave stuff like crusts and hotdog remnants around. Chloe has been known to disappear under the footy spectators' pavilion steps to search for scraps. To an unknowning onlooker, they seem to be behaving as underfed. They get a meal at 4pm everyday and that's it, except for an occasional "treat". Good luck! :D Henrynchlo
19. Singapore have K9events? U mean asking them online for advice ? Last night and this morning, when i feed Rascal. When i put down the food and he don't eat.. i take away.. put down take away put down take away.. after a few times.. he ate half . This morning also ate half. Will this small down his appeitie? My boy weight 3.2kg only for a maltese Hello Haze, The Editor of that site, an Australian web site, will be able to help. The website is www.k9events.com/ It has nothing to do with K9force. There are also many articles on k9events (the website) for reading. They give excellent advice. As for feeding Rascal - put his food down for him to eat. If he hasn't eaten it withing 1/2 hr. take it away. He'll soon get the message. At the moment you are giving him the opportunity to "train you!" Good luck, Henrynchlo
20. Singapore dun have K9force. And very costly. I tried to read book .. i am kindof lazy.. i always read half way then return the book to library Hello Haze, Congratulations on your obvious commitment to your dog. Try looking at www.k9events.com.au/ The editor of that site is very knowledgeable and will, possibly, suggest some trainers in your area. I know there is at least one but can't recollect her name. Good luck! Henrynchlo
21. Hi all, My two get fed in the afternoon after their walk. I have made it a point to ask them both to sit before I put their meals down and then they have to wait for the cue to start. They will wait a considerable time, at some stage beginning to drool before they break their "wait". They know that they just can't go in and start before the say so! They will even do this for yummy treats when asked. I don't understand the thinking behind making the dogs wait until the humans have eaten. What does it prove? JMHO Henrynchlo.
