  1. Happy Birthday Chloe, what a wonderful milestone, I hope all of my furkids can reach it. Jenna was at the vets today for her eye test and I decided to get her DNA samples done too, just in case I can breed her this year. The vet asked me if she had had anything to eat and I rather sheepishly had to say that she shared my watermelon breakfast. He didn't say much other than as long as it wasn't meat it was ok, but I'm sure I detected a slightly raised eyebrow at my dogs diet.
  2. This was a comment on another video of the same dogs, hopefully it is true and I can stop crying. These 2 dogs have been rescued! Helped by a team of volunteers led by the owner of a pet food company : Kenn Sakurai - the only way they can access the region is on dirt bikes w/ cages strapped on the back. It took them 2-hrs to ride them to the nearest shelter in Mito, Ibaraki-ken. The white one still at the vet & his defender is waiting at the shelter.
  3. One of my worse nightmares, glad your dogs were ok.
  4. Dissolve 1 tsp boric acid and 6 tablespoons of sugar in a cup of water. Soak some cotton wool balls in solution and but in a puppy proof sealed container with a few nail holes punched in. Put containers where you have the ant infestation, the ants will go in and feed from it and then take the poison back to the nest and poison the lot. Make sure it is pet and kid proof though as boric acid is poisonous. Vinegar sprayed around an area is also mean't to be an ant deterrant.
  5. My Australian Shepherd shows a definaite distinction between dogs of other breeds and dogs of her own breed. With other breeds she can be a little standoffish and sometimes nervous until she knows them, really big dogs like St Bernards, Danes etc she freaks at but if its an Aussie she goes all gooey and playful almost straight away. Don't know how or why she makes the distinction just that she does.
  6. Saw on the news today one Japanese family reunited with their pet dog who they went back to look for after the town was wiped out. Hope others are equally lucky finding their pets and loved ones alive.
  7. I was surprised to see how common this seemed to be in Chihauhaus on Youtube, is this a problem with the breed? I use to breed Chi's years ago without any issues but was wondering if these deformed dogs all had a common ansestor. Personally, I think it would be kinder to PTS a pup born this way while yes they do learn to cope the homes suitable for these guys would be limited and one would have to wonder why someone would want a dog with these complications. There are enough healthy dogs out there needing homes without these special needs guys taking up shelter resourses. Having said that, would you put down this dog? He more than copes on two legs (one front, one back). The difference is that he is already in a loving home and apparently had no problems at all adjusting, needs not additional apparatise to get around like a normal dog and no wear and tear on parts that shouldn't be getting it.
  8. All of the things mentioned are useful plus a second pair of hands, usually attached to someone that you can have a good chat with while you wait between pups. My sister and I both being single act as each others second pair of hands/whelping partner. Handy if you have to work on a pup without the mum or mum needs a little help or you just have to go to the loo but don't want to leave the dog unsupervised. Pizza seems to be the common food here to maintain the humans involved and Glucodin and warm lactose free milk for the whelping mum between pups. A very necessary addition to the whelping box for my Aussie girl was her favorite toy, every time we tried to remove it she would leave the whelping box to retrieve it so in the end it stayed there.
  9. Many years ago I owned a Golden Retriever and no matter how much I fed him (and he was fed enough to keep a Great Dane happy) he looked like something out of a concentration camp. It was embarressing when we went out because people would glare at us as we had one dog that was a little overweight and Dylan who looked like he was in need of a feed. Vets were not able to determine why he looked like this but he was healthy in every other respect and had plenty of energy, these days I ofter wonder if he had a Celiac disorder as he was on a kibble diet or wether the fact that he loved to pick grapes of the vine caused it (back then we didn't know about grapes and dogs). Unfortunately back then we didn't have the benefit of the internet and were limited to the vets knowledge at the time. In the photo he looks miserable because he did not like having to stay in one spot for the photo, usually he was a happy, dopey big lug with endless energy and a love of cuddles. So while your concern is not a bad thing don't be too quick to judge this dogs owners, there may be a valid reason behind the dog's condition.
  10. Yay for Lara I am sure we all agree with that sentiment Personally I will no longer have two dogs who do not get along living together anymore - my dogs are not kennels dogs that can be constantly seperated, they are members of my family and are with me where ever I am in the house. I didn't realise how stressed I was until I rehomed Robi and now both he and Banjo get the attention they deserve withouth the other missing out The right home is out there for Chance and better that home is found now rather than it being a few weeks down the track and Mason still having problems. ETA: If I had the luxury of taking a year off work to introduce a new dog I might take the time, but given I am away from home for 11 hours each work day it is just not realistic. I won't keep any dog that does not fit into my household, all my animals have to be happy to co-exist, don't have to be the best of mates and minor disagreements are fine but anything beyond that and the troublemaker is gone. I would much rather rehome a dog to a different social situation so that it can have the full benefit of its human companions and I can have a harmonious household that is relaxed with everyone in the same room. I don't believe separation is a good option outside of a kennel situation as there is always the chance of accidents where one dog gets to the other sometimes with disasterous results, and I don't believe having to split my time between divided up dogs is fair on them either, (although I do try to make sure all of the fur and feather kids get a little one on one time each) as I would rather spend the maximum time with them all. My outlook is "A dog that is a bad fit in one household can be an ideal fit in another, why not give it the chance to have its ideal fit." I have tried the other option and have learn't the hard way that it is not the way for this household. Mason2009, you did the right thing, while the dogs may have learn't to coexist the difference in temperment may have resulted in ongoing issues that would have caused stress for the whole household. Mason is a wonderful boy with a temperment to match and you would not want to risk spoiling this.
  11. Without a crystalball anyone would be foolish to give a health guarentee beyond the animals current health at that time. Even with health testing none of us can guarentee that health issues won't crop up no matter how hard we try to aliviate them and I say as much to any of my pupppy buyers. While we can offer replacements in some circumstances in our contracts, or even in good faith without a contract this is not really the same thing and one would have to be wary of the legal implications of giving a health guarentee for the future.
  12. Hey Mason 2009, Jenna would have been a major fail on all of the tick boxes of selecting an ideal dog, other than the fact that she was the breed, colour, sex I wanted, and I could get her Main registered at a price I could afford. While she's far from the perfect performance dog (probabaly because she has been spoilt rotten by me and I'm not a good trainer) she couldn't be a more perfect dog for me personality wise and as you know is very much my heart dog. Go with your gut feeling for the dog, while no dog comes with any guarentees on how it will be performance wise how it fits into your life in general 24/7 will be the best desider. Are you able to perhaps take him home on a trail basis for a couple of weeks to see how he and Mason get on in a variety of situations and see how well Mason accepts another dog sharing his humans 24/7, that way you can also assess wether there are any issues with the pup fitting into your lives. Good luck and we all want to see pictures ASAP if you decide that Chance is the right dog for you.
  13. Years ago my Heeler/Kelpie X brought something over to me in his mouth and not knowing what it was I put out my hand for him to drop whatever it was into it. I was horrified when he deposited the tiniest little baby mouse(fully furred with eyes open) into my hand, somewhat wet from being in the dogs mouth but otherwise unharmed. Don't know how he managed to pick it up without harming it. Now I'm more wary about putting out my hand if I don't know what my dogs have.
  14. Your sitting on the computer and you look to see your dog is sitting next to you nodding its head up and down continuously. While you ponder what is wrong with the dog you look down to see that you hand is resting on your belly in a YES signal position. Your in another room and you hear the tinkle of your keys, you peek your head around the door in time to see the dog pinch the keys of the sidetable and then proceed to put them in her toybox before walking away. On entering the room later you ask the dog where the keys are and she grabs them from her toybox without having to waste time searching and then wonders why your too busy laughing to give her the big reward she has become accustomed too when she finds your lost keys when your mean't to be heading to work. You train your dog to enjoy the treadmill so much that you never get to use it again yourself without the dog taking over. Got to admit this one is a great excuse not to exercise myself.
  15. Abit like people, I was once told that the best way to not be shy around people is to play act at being confident. Have to admit it did help alot I am not nearly as shy as I use to be although I would not say I'm a confident person either and I still struggle in some situations. I have never thought to try it with a dog but it sounds like it has worked for your friends dog. Although thinking about it I suppose Click to Calm and Control Unleashed do work on similar principles.
  16. Reading this got me to remembering when my sister and I had our Aussie pups down at the park, definaitly no fear of the other pup eating my pups poop. My pup starts to poop, other pup goes over for a sniff, drops its ears and has a look of horror as it turns away and makes a quick retreat, starts frothing at the mouth and proceeds to start being sick. Mmm, my pups poop must have been mighty bad to get that reaction. We still laugh about it more than 6 years later I only wish I had a video camera to catch the moment, especially the look on the dogs face.
  17. my pup was vaccinated c5 on the 21st and just got K.C the other day, it made me very wary of where i was walking her and what other bloody dogs where not vacc that she met!!! As vaccinaited dogs do get Kennel cough and we are told it is a different strain to what is inocculaited for then perhaps the other dogs were vaccinaited. Some illnesses are contagious before symptoms appear and owners unwittingly spread it because they are unaware their dogs are unwell. I can't understand the person Knowingly taking their dog out with Kennel cough though and risking spreading it. I think I would have kicked them out of my shop and given them a lecture on being responsiable.
  18. At the time I was there the vet also dealt with the general public so some of the pets would have been much loved pets too sick to help too. Back then there wasn't pet creamation options and it was illegal to bury pets in your yard so I'm guessing that the vet would not release the bodies anyway. This is going back about 36 years ago and alot that we take for granted now was not available then including some medical options for our pets. Hope they find a true forever home for this little dog, but it is still so sad for all those others that don't get a second chance.
  19. Unfortunately that is all their lives do come down to. When I was a teenager I worked at the RSPCA on weekends but only lasted a couple of weekends as I could not handle seeing all the PTS animals piled up in a bin outside. I could not come to terms with healthy animals being put down nor the undignified way they were just piled into a bin. In the time I was there I had walked many of the dogs that were later seen in this bin and all had lovely temperments also any pets PTS by the vet for whatever reason were added to the bin which I'm sure would distress many owners further if they knew.
  20. Dogs not use to eating bones will throw up little bits of bone to start with until their system adjusts, this usually leads to people believing that a RMB diet is not suitable for their dogs, but if continued the dog adjusts within a week or so. When my dogs first started on RMB diet I had this and almost changed my mind until I researched further and realised that there was nothing to worry about. By the way a RMB diet does not mean that the dog gets lots of bone, just a proportianal amount to what they would get if eating prey. Also I do not give weight bearing bones like marrow bones(ie beef legs etc) as they are teeth breakers. RMB I think would be better than smoked bones for teeth cleaning but I don't have any experience with smoked bones. Even just adding a couple of chicken carcases a week to a medium sized dogs diet and cutting back on the other food accordingly would be beneficial.
  21. Kennel cough mutates.. immunity to one strain doesn't guarantee immunity to others Kennel cough is transmitted directly from one dog to the other by air. I've never heard of it having a residual chance of transmission but a person who's touched a dog with the illness might pose a risk. Parvovirus is a whole different ballgame. It can be transmitted on shoes, clothes etc. There is no way I'd have a partially vaccinated dog in a workplace unless people disinfected their hands before touching her. This is what I have been told by my Vet. He says there is little point vaccinating your "average" pet againt KC as there are so many mutations. He recommends it for Dogs that frequent areas where large amounts of dogs attend such as at Shows or Obediance Clubs, trials, or Boarding Kennels etc. My two adult dogs have just come down with kennel cough after exposure to two rescue pups who arrived with it. The pups were on antibiotics immediately and their coughing was quite minimal. However, my two adult dogs seem to have it worse then the pups had it, and strangely enough the dog who has been getting the C5 vax for several years has it worse then the dog who has only received the C4. The vet nurse said that it is just like the human flu vax - it doesn't cover all the strains so vaccinating for kennel cough is still no guarantee they wont get it as it is transmitted by various viruses and also bacteria. When two of my vaccinaited dogs came down with Kennel cough years ago I dosed them and my unvaccinaited dog with Apple Cider vinegar approx every four hours. Seemed to reduce the kennel cough in the two affected dogs and the unvaccinaited dog never caught it, thankfully as he is old and has a bad heart. Not sure if it was the ACV or just luck but as I always take ACV when I get a cold and it reduces the symtoms considerably I figured it was worth a try as it breaks down the phlem. I used a teaspoon of it for a small dog and a desserspoon worth for a 18kg dog syringed in.
  22. The teeth of a 6 and a half year old dog, never been brushed or scaled by vet on a RMB diet. While there is a tiny amount of tartar discolouration vets are always impressed with the state of this girls teeth. I don't believe that my brushing her teeth would necessarily result in any better effect. I only wish that my old boy had been put on to this sort of diet earlier in life as he had a very bad tarter problem and lost a number of teeth to it. His teeth were scaled about 7 years ago but because of the condition of his teeth the vet was not able to remove the build up of tarter completly (he is also considered a high risk under anastetic because of a bad heart so teeth were only done because he was under for something else). He has since been on RMB diet and while there is still tarter his teeth aren't too bad for a 14 year old.
  23. Was hoping that everyone competing tonight would have their results up, but only know how Mirrawee went. Hope that means you all did great and are hanging around for the presentation. Wanted to come tonight but feel like s...t, what a great way to start my two weeks of holidays. If I look like a drunken sailor tomorrow night, I promise I haven't been drinking, but I am hoping that I will wake up normal tomorrow, well as normal as I get anyway.
  24. Yep! Don't be silly! We are a friendly bunch, probably talk a bit too much though! After trianing last night I was talking to RosieFT and Mirawee and Ozjen for ages, then RosieFT and I said we were going then I think we ended up gasbagging for another half an hour next to the cars RE puppy schools - Kyzer went to puppy school. And look at hime I think puppy schools can be good but I will never ever again go to one that is just a free for all with puppies getting smacked down all over the place, especially with smaller puppies. Most fo us are abit shy to start with Labrat, but our mutual love of dogs makes it easier to mix and then you can't shut us up. :D Thanks Ozjen You there Friday night??? Or Saturday..... As I don't have a life outside of the dogs, I'll probabaly be there all four nights. :D
  25. Thanks Jodie... and she knows it too Lappies are lovely dogs She might end up being a film star too! Just got a phone call from someone looking for a Lappy to star in a TV commercial Given there aren't that many Lappies in WA who could do what they need (I can think of maybe 3 and that is pushing it) I may as well send her photo in They pay $500 as well! Wow, ask them if they need an Aussie or Pap for any other commercials then I can send the kids out to work for me instead of me working for them. They would be making more than me at that rate.
