  1. Because it keeps the bowel healthy and also benefits the over all health of the rest of the body. Yoghurt with living culture is a 'live food'- living friendly bacteria which produces probiotics which is like a natural antibiotic. So can be used to normalise the bacteria of a dogs bowel. (Great benefit for a dog taking antibiotics) Yoghurt can be added to any dogs food, sick or well, as it is an excellent source of calcium, high class protein, vitamin A & vitamin B.
  2. Yes chevorne morons ......I mean what were they thinking taking a 5 or 6 week old puppy to a dog park ?????
  3. Update : Have just very briefly seen the puppy that was kept at 3 weeks old. Looked healthy enough but very timid. When I asked how he was doing, the answer was He's a sook & he has been to the doggy park but didn't like it Decided to keep my thoughts to myself. One tough little puppy
  4. Sorry for the delay chellz Finally worked out how to resize to uplaod Here are my boys past & present First photo is Jangels (J for Jake & angel = Jangels ) the cream one 17 months with Louis our new baby 15 weeks Second photo is Jake just after he had a clip He would be 13 in this photo. Beautiful boys :D
  5. awww its not good is it, I hated seeing ella sick, you feel so helpless.. they cant tell you whats wrong!! Our old labby Jake had KC which seemed to go on for ever. He sounded like he was choking sometimes. It was awful & as you said you feel so helpless. Our vet told us at the time, there are lot's of strains & can be difficult to treat. But he was 14 I think when he contracted it so would of been harder because of his age to fight it I'm guessing. What a gorgeous photo of your Ella in your signature. Love that name !! Ohh no poor thing...Im going to worry like crazy when Ella gets older(just like I do with my kids) lol I love the name Jake.. It would definitely suit a lab.. Id love to see a pic Sorry hope I didn't make you worry more I used to blame myself for poor Jakeys kc as I used to have him vaccinated with C4 instead of C5 as he never went to a kennel. Stoopid me didn't realise that it was able to be picked up anywhere until our vet explained Our new 2 Lab boys both get C5 now I would love to show you a pic of our beautiful boy so will get one from my external hard drive & upload tomorrow sometime Ella looks similar colour to our Jangels..... Beautiful

  7. Same for my Lab Jangels is obessed with tissues too ...... Used or unused he's not fussy Never caused any problems
  8. My boys are fed completely raw (human grade) & I believe from my research deep freezing kills any potential parasites germs etc, So I'm always a few meals ahead & all their food as soon as I purchase it, goes into the freezer for at least 24 hours before I defrost & feed just to be on the safe side. Believe that is why BARF is sold frozen.
  9. No I didn't call the RSPCA in the beginning as I was happy to feed them knowing that this was going to be the outcome, although I believe another neighbour did ring & was told that in order to surrender the litter the mother had to be surrended as well. My point is this: I believe they did the right thing surrending as by their own admission they can't & don't want to care for a dog at all, but WHY keep & separate a 3 week old puppy from it's mother COMPLETELY UNNECESSARILY. This poor little puppy would be fretting terribly. I believe they don't have the skills or dedication to raise this puppy & when the novelity wears off, if it survived, it is in for the same neglectful life of it's predecessors. How was the the RSPCA to know they were being neglected ?? Because I told them so. And there are other neighbours who would confirm this. It should be RSPCA business that a 3 week old puppy was retained by a humanbeing "Who hates dogs".
  10. Thanks for your replies everyone. I am just frustrated. This is the 2nd of their dogs I have helped care for. Their last dog was kept in a permanent enclosure with very little sunlight & NO human company because the owners got sick of collecting her back from the pound. My guess is she was escaping to look for food The latest situation with the puppies was just plain cruelity IMO. The wife said it was the husbands responsibilty to look after mum & babies as "It's not my dog" AND "I hate dogs" AND "Why don't you take them all home? " But yet it was her idea to keep a puppy after surrending the mum who had the most beautiful nature & the other 4 puppies. All of the above was repeated in my phone call to the RSPCA but no, stiil couldn't be acted on until i could prove current neglect. This is the frst & last time I will ever contact them
  11. Just wondering if anyone else can relate to my story. Long story cut short A neighbour's SBT X had a litter of 7 puppies 4 weeks ago. I was asked by the owners to " come & have a look" & "do you want a puppy? " (1 puppy died & another got lost in the back yard) I was appalled at the condition of mother of the pups- spine & ribs showing & looking distressed. So for a little over 3 weeks, I went over & fed her 3 times a day so as to keep up her milk for her babies At the 3 week mark she lost her milk so with the help of another neighbour we fed the remaining 5 puppies as well as the mum. The owners surrended the mum & 4 puppies to the RSPCA & kept a 3 week 3 day old puppy. I had grave concerns for the puppies welfare so rang the RSPCA to express my thoughts that it was cruel to on purpose separate a 3 week old puppy from it's mother (& litter mates) I was told that past neglect history by the owners isn't relevant now & that I should check on the puppy & then report back to them if it was't being cared for. I thought that the P in RSPCA represented Prevention I don't know if the poor little puppy made it but hopefully not as doggy heaven would be a much better place than his alternative.
  12. I have the Kong tug toy & my Lab loves it. Have had over 12 months now & still going strong with just a bit of fraying on the rope. One of the best toy purchases we made.
  13. Have to agree aussielover :D And I have 2 of them & neither would even think of doing this . Apparently this dog jumps up at their kitchen bench & grabs food
  14. Thank you everyone for your replies. Time to be firm & at the least teach her some manners whilst in my backyard
  15. Thanks for your reply Scarlet. No my neighbour isn't here at playtime. I think she watches out the window though And I try not to eat in front of the dogs at all but that is hard not to do sometimes as I need to eat something before I start work at lunchtime & I have to be there with the dogs supervising our 11 week old Lab Louis playing with Jangels & the neighbours dog. Now that my thoughts on this behaviour have been confirmed I intend to be firm with her in the future & hopefully teach her some manners :D .
  16. Hi All, I am wanting other DOLer's especially Kelpie owners, opinions on this situation. Our next door neighbours have an approximately 9 month old female Kelpie X BC which from having lived on a farm all my childhood with Kelpie working dogs, appears to be more Kelpie than BC. Anyway, because her & my Lab Jangels bonded from day 1, they have play dates 3 - 4 days a week mainly in our backyard for about an hour each visit. She is a lovely sweet girl, but you cannot eat in front of her as she jumps up & tries to grab out of my hand or plate whatever I am eating. It is so annoying. My husband thinks it is because she is not fed enough. To me she is perfect health & weight. So is this just a Kelpie thing or is it lack of manners/obedience ? I feel uncomfortable discipling someone's else's dog I have conveyed my concerns to her owners but so far there is no change in behaviour Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
  17. All I can say Sunnyflower I know what you are going through & my thoughts are with you at this very difficult time And lots of love to Oscar
  18. Excellent point! Tom's Poultry in Fyshwick sells wings, frames etc at a good price for larger orders. A freezer will be your best friend for feeding dogs cheaply and well. I feed completely raw.... Purchased a secondhand couple year old chest freezer from Gumtree for about $90 specifically for bulk buying & couldn't do without it.
  19. As usual, PF, so well said. I can so much relate to the 'halo effect' . And, as you said giving new puppies time to adjust to us is so true. I love your reading your posts
  20. Lovely post Very similar here in our neighbourhood Jangels & Louis play with Sally all the time & Neville & Sooky are used to me talking to them over the fence. We all keep an eye out for all the doggies in our street which is a nice feeling
  21. What sort of patty are you talking about? Big Dog BARF & all varieties All the commercial ones I know have fruit and vege already in them so in effect what you are doing IMO is drastically reducing the amount of usable protein your dogs are getting and bulking out the little goodness in the patty with unusable vege & fruit and unbalancing the whole premade patty Even though I don't know the exact proportion of the fruit & vege content of the patties, IMO I don't think there is enough F&V in them. I can assume this because I HAVE made my own patties many, many times & still do when time permits. That is my 2nd reason for adding my own F&V. Dr Ian Billinghurst in the 2 of his 3 books that I have read, suggests that when making your own BARF, that the F&V content be 50% with raw meat being the other 50%. Dr Billinghurst also states "that the BARF diet is balanced over time & not by providing balance in every meal". So I doubt the patties are so supposed to be 'balanced' so I wouldn't be unbalancing by adding extra F&V. All i want to achieve is getting back to basics in regards to nutrition which I have achieved with what I have discussed & with most importantly, daily Raw Meaty Bones. Adding sardines and eggs etc is great, but IMO what you are doing is buying patties then making your own, why don't you just make your own (with some tweaking). Just interested Yes you are probably correct in this assumption. Kids like MacDonalds - I'd never be taking the dog eats in it seconds as being any sort of recommendation (especially a Lab ) Not ALL Labs are the same. Jangels is a little fussy compared to our old boy Jake McDonalds could be compared to tinned & dry food not any RAW diet IMO. Yes I do agree with raw feeding, big fan here and I'm NOT picking on you, but I see this so much - "my dogs love it" as if this in itself was a recommendation. Dogs love dirty baby nappies too I can't see what is wrong with saying 'my dogs love it' . And yes, I am recommending what I feed. Because: 1. I am speaking from my experiences and I have happy, healthy 16 month old Labrador that has never tasted commercial food. 2. His breeder saw him for the first time 2 weeks ago and was absolutely delighted with him. Beautiful coat, perfect weight amongst her many compliments. 3. Our vet who owns a Labrador himself, said at our last visit for vaccination, we are doing a wonderful job & that he is a picture of health.
  22. I feed my Labs one patty a night & make them go further by adding fruit & veg. I finely grate fruit usually a whole apple (minus seeds), carrotts, zuchini etc Whatever is in season that is cheap & very ripe. Couple times a week they get an egg, including the shell, fresh sardines & chopped up lamb kidney/liver, cottage cheese all mixed in with one patty. Their main meal is therefore double the size of 1 patty. Jangels & Louis love it. Gone in seconds!! I am lucky here in Brisbane and purchase from where it is made. If you buy 4 boxes, they are $17.50 each. Which lasts my 2 boys, 3 1/2 weeks.
  23. Can I ask your reasons that you would never buy BARF patties please Staranais? My breeder says it is the best food you can feed. Just curious Thanks
