  1. Wooohhhhoooo TSD!!! Sounds fantastic! I popped in to ask if anyone's dogs has had an issue with March flies?? On 3 occasions now (the 3rd being tonight), Mars has been too worried about March flies buzzing around to work with his usual gumption. I will make sure to spray him before any training, does anyone recommend a particular 'F off insect spray'?... might get some recordings of buzzing and do some counter conditioning too... really want to nib this in the bud
  2. TSD - Way to go Em!! It sounds like soooo much fun!! RS - I love my original Hunters and got them from countryattire.com Great service and good shipping speed! Would recommend them :)
  3. Hahahaha! Just the poke I needed TSD! Well, I bought some bumpers, a dokken and a whistle for down the track. I went along to a training day but methods used weren't really up my alley, so we've started on our own and the little dude is doing single marks nicely to about 40m so far, only one session has been in low cover the rest on pretty short grass. Steadiness is good, he marks really well, goes out very enthusiastically, brings it back to me and currently delivers in a stand but we're working on a nice sitted front separately and I'll join it up once it's sorted. Once I get thats done I'll enlist some help on how best to progress! He's had a lot of swimming practice this summer... he's swimming technique was a lot to be desired  but he seems to have sorted it out now and has become a very confident swimmer, so I'll see how he goes with some water work soon. I find the instinct amazing to watch and he just LOVES it! He's like Em though, hates repetition so I've been doing agility stuff and switching to retrieving and back again. Suits him well :)
  4. Em looks fabulous TSD!! That was a long swim!! Very Impressive!
  5. I love driving my Territory! I have the back seats permanently folded with a medium size crate setup for a Vizsla. I have gazebo, chair, 2 soft crates and stuff (you know what I mean!!) arranged around the crate. I have a cargo barrier separating the back, where the Dane travels in comfort. Everybody is very happy. The downsides to the Territory is the fuel (not a problem for highway driving though), and of course you always accumulate more and more stuff/dogs and want a bigger car. If I was you, I'd look at Ranger/Triton/Navara/HiLux etc. with a canopy... that's what I'll be going for next time!
  6. Thanks TSD! It was actually something you posted a while back in response to wasting drive retrieving tennis balls which has made me want to get him started, after throwing a ball at the weekend... he has some qualities I should really harness! Very speedy he was on the send out and return, and didn't give up 'hunting' until he found it (we were playing in the dark). It won't be our 'main' sport but I figure we'll have a stab, learn the ropes and try to do some RATs... I went along to a local RAT a few months ago, looked fun! Certainly something the boy will enjoy!
  7. Hi retrieving folk! I've been semi lurking for a while and I'm wanting to get some supplies for me and my 10 month Vizsla to start getting some retrieving going... So basically, what should be in the retrieving 'starter pack'? And what kind of dummies should I get and how many and in what colour? I was thinking of getting the book Positive Gun Dogs: Clicker Training for Sporting Breeds (Karen Pryor Clicker Books) to get me started, has anyone found this book to be helpful? Cheers!
  8. I have a now 7 month Vizsla pup with the intention of dog sports. He is awesome! Incredibly intelligent and he has the perfect amount of drive for me right now. He's sooo much fun to train, it's very exciting to watch him develop. He's certainly people focused, they aren't called 'the velcro Vizsla' for nothing! His playmate at home is a Great Dane and he certainly handles himself and has done since day 1 in our house I'm having a lot of fun with him, I could easily have another or two ;)
  9. We love our Territory! Wouldn't swap it for anything else. We bought ours new at the end of 2009. We fit a Great Dane in the back with a cargo barrier and have a crate for our Vizsla on the back seats which lay completely flat when folded. We manage to fit gazebo and all the usual stuff in as well. Everyone is very comfy! Love all the storage compartments that we can fill with dog stuff
  10. Hey all! Has anyone bought/used one of these? http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...p;ParentCat=124 If so what did you think of it? Do you think a Dane would be able to get the treat out quickly or would Sash spend too long trying to take it for it to be useful?
  11. Hey Raineth! When I started with Sash, I decided to not participate at club to train weavers. I knew that Sash wouldn't be able to go through guides, like Digby - I definitely didn't want her freaking out and getting stuck in them, nor did I want them slowing her down resulting in slow weaves. I taught them at home/in the park using 2x2 method. And Vickie's right - no one cares once they're taught I say, have a fun time at club with Digby and anything you don't want to do their way, teach it at home. Whilst everyone else is working, you work on something else or have a game of your own. Sometimes I'd let Sash have a rest instead of doing anything because an hour of training is a lot for her, the big dogs don't have the stamina for it, bless em!
  12. FYI, Kmart have 33cm balance discs advertised on sale for $8 each at the moment. They come with a pump too! I bought 4, and when it came time to pay they were only $5 - gotta love it when that happens!
  13. Ooo, nice tip! I like We've been doing crate games for a couple of months and are loving it!! Sash was previously crate trained but never raced to her crate like she does now. It's so much fun, we often play a round at night when OH is watching some sport thing on TV We love the 'changed my mind' game - we play from one of the house to the other. It's hilarious! And since playing the games, I've noticed Sash going to her crate by herself a lot more often to sleep or relax with the door left open.
  14. Ok, after a few glasses I'll join in here naming Sash & I's goals to the (DOL) world for next year. I would like to start trialling in agility and gain AD & JD titles, at least. I would also like to start our tracking trialling and get TD, seeing as last season we got off to a great start and ended the season on a very positive note There. It's public. Now, I can't back out
  15. I find these work great! Tugs well with a dane on the end, has lasted and flies great too http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...mp;ParentCat=34
  16. Staranais, I have been training my dane using 2x2s and am mega happy with the result!! :D I think it's a good method for the larger breeds! Sash practicing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bISBk3991CE
  17. LOL I did wonder as well! But I bought a tunnel, click/treated for any interaction with it and suddenly she just decided to go though it. I couldn't believe it! I made a huge deal about it, she went through again and after rewarding her I put it away. She's smart, fit and agile - it's a challenge, but she always surprises me. I love training her!
  18. Hi everyone! I have just started agility with my dane *cue laughter* and am really glad this thread has opened up! I reckon, I'll be needing to pick your brains a fair bit My first 2 questions... 1. Where can I get hold of some 2x2 weave poles sets? Or has anyone had the base plates made by a metal fabricator dude? 2. How long did it take for you to become totally addicted? Cause I think I'm going to develop a 'problem' pretty quick
  19. Love this thread! How about Seal/Sealion Obedience?
  20. Hi Maddi1146! There's a Dane thread on DOL. Come join us! There are lots of dane owners on there! http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...&start=2715 Is she the 5 month blue rescue from Albury by any chance? I would feed them separately in pack order with your new pup last ideally but if you're strapped for time perhaps feeding in different areas?
  21. If he didn't he wouldn't have any Sydney north shore 'designer dog daaaarling' owners wanting to give their oodles of cash to him to train their screwed up dogs that they bought in pet shops!!
