  1. Hi Cazwah,we were told to leave our pups vaccinations for as close to the due date as possible. As for the Hiccups,Wuggles used to,and still does get them, sometimes he gets doubles, and sometimes he gets tripple hiccups, which is pretty funny to watch,so it is very common in pups,he doesnt get them as much now,he burps like a pig instead. With the ears mites and infections, because Wugs is a pug, with overhanging ears, our vet gets a sample under the microscope every visit we get.Thats why the vet gave us Advocate,as it helps prevent ear mites.
  2. Hi all, Just wondering if it is ok to mix a few sardines into my Pugs BARF 2 or 3 times a week?Or,is there anything else i can mix in with his BARF a couple of times a week, just to make it a bit more exciting and different for him once in a while? Thanks
  3. Roland the abandoned shar pei undergoes a facelift to stop going blind from entropion Roland the Sharpei dog that had corrective surgery too help him see properly. He is pictures at the RSPCA and is looking for a home soon. IT'S the facelift that could save Roland's life. Rather than the vanity that motivates hounded Hollywood stars into seeking plastic surgery, Roland the abandoned shar pei has had a face lift so he won't go blind. As a shar pei, Roland is highly prized for his wrinkly skin, but the breed suffers from entropion, a painful condition in which his wrinkles cause his eyelashes to turn inward and rub against his eyeballs. If left untreated the condition could have caused Roland to go blind and was preventing him from being rehomed. The solution: A double eye lift and full face lift. RSPCA chief vet Magdoline Awad said the 90-minute surgery was not about vanity. "What we have done is made him adoptable," she said. "It is not uncommon in this breed, it is a congenital problem." Roland's eye lift surgery and excess face wrinkle removal cost almost $1000. Roland now had a better chance at finding a good home as a family could adopt him without having to pay for the surgery, Dr Awad said. Roland is one of growing number of shar peis turning up at animal shelters. The breed, once the world's rarest, is often dumped after owners realise the costs of correcting the breed's congenital health problems. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle...i-1225816056973
  4. Hi Mars, i wouldnt use aloe direct from a plant, aloe plants are poisonous for dogs,so i have been told. But you can use products containing aloe, just not directly from the plant itself. The vet told us to use whatever we had,i think we used Bettadine,so i would say you can use a normal human antiseptic, nothing too harsh like pure dettol or anything, just a everyday antiseptic cream ,or you can go and buy some special dog antiseptic cream from a pet shop or a vets, but if you have it,just use it. Licking it (the dog that is )is fine,it will help heal it,but just always be on the look out for swelling or discolouration,as an infection will prolong the healing procecss and a vet visit would be advisable. Most likely you will be better off just letting her lick it,alot less hassle if it is not bothering her too much.Try the anitseptic cream and see how you go,it cant hurt.Good luck with her,let us know how she goes.
  5. Hi Mars. My mums dog had this happen,we were in the pool on a hot day,the dog kept running around the pool on the hot pavers,he burnt all 4 pads off his paws,he was in no pain though. We called the vet straight away and he told us to put some antiseptic cream on them, wrap them with bandages and try to keep him off his paws for a day or 2,and they will heal by themslves.Which they did,but they got sore after a while and then got better, the only real hassle was trying to stop him eating the bandages off. So her pad should heal by itself, just make sure it does not get infected and keep it clean, put a bit of soothing antiseptic cream on it and bandage it for a few days, and she should be back to normal.
  6. Thanks JudyG,ill look into Centenary a bit more, what was the problems discussed on DOL with them?
  7. Hi bella_bear,I really hope your little pup pulls through, sending all my good wishes and luck.I cant comment much on Parvo itself, but all i know is that it is a dog owners worst nightmare, and i really do wish you all the best of luck, lots of hugs and love! Thanks for the update.
  8. Thanks jettyjet,Good Dog Bad Dog was one of my top 3,and i have also heard that VIP is very good, did Jet and yourself really enjoy the training?as i dont want Wugs or us to think of training as a chore,i want us all to enjoy the experience and get everything out of it as we possibly can,he seemed to enjoy his home training we gave him,as it was food reward based, and he loved showing us that he knew what we were saying and he could do what we asked him to.
  9. Hi all, We want to get Wugs into an obedience training school or classes,i know we should have done this by now,but he is well socialised with friends dogs,he can sit, stay,Drop,Down, come,he walks pretty good on a lead, sometimes sits down and wont budge without some encouragement. He is nearly 6 months old, house trained, but he still likes to bite a bit too much,he knows the command of "gentle" and "no Biting",but we want to get him as much out of the habit as possible,we also just want a well balanced, well mannered and well trained dog,we also want to learn alot more as well, like how to read body language, and be balanced with the dog ourselves etc. We are on the southside of Brisbane,i have checked out a few,but how do i decide on which one,any ideas, experiences and suggetions would be great, here are the main ones i have looked at, VIP at Yatala RSPCA at Fairfield Good Dog Bad Dog Pet City at macgregor Centenary Dog Obedience Southside Dog Obedience
  10. Any news on your pup. If you dont mind me asking, what sort of dog is it? And was the Breeder in Brisbane?
  11. Thanks everyone for the suggestions and ideas. If i decide on the Canine Country BARF,should i add anything a few times per week, like sardines, yougurt etc?
  12. Thanks all. He can do it.he can drop now, yay.
  13. Very interesting thread. i was only thinking this morning about what we can do with Wuggles. He is a 5 1/2 month old Pug.He sleeps really well in the dining room in his sleep pen, most of the time he struggles until we put him in there,so he is very happy to go to sleep in there. He does sometimes still have a little wee in there though, most times he doesnt. My OH wants him to sleep on the bed with us,but it is just too hot most nights for all 3 of us in the bed, yes, she has suggested that i curl up in Wugs pen and leave them in the bed to sleep .Besides being too hot, they both snore,i dont mind the Pug snore,as it sends me to sleep, but added to the OH snoring,no sleep for me.He has slept in the bed twice before,he is very fidgity, and wakes up every 30 mins and licks your face just to make sure you are still there. Here is my question or questions- Should we wait until he can contain his wee for definate before we let him sleep else where? Should i stop him from drinking water after a certain time,as i also put a water bowl in his sleep pen incase he gets thirsty as it gets quite hot? he never sleeps past 5:00am,we have tried everything, toileting and putting back to bed, kong in his sleep pen,no good, just will not sleep past 5:00am,could having him in our room help to sleep in? If he was to sleep in our room,i would prefer he sleep on a bed on the floor, that way he access to the ensuit tiles if it is hot, because we would have to shut the bedroom door so he doesnt wander in the night, what sort of bed would be good for the bedroom for him,a few blankets,a kennel, one of those hammock sort of beds ? OR,should we just leave him where he is comfortable and quiet, but wake up in between 4:15 and 5am every morning? I did suggest to the OH to have him sleep outside,I had to sleep in the spare room that night. :p Thanks for any suggestions and ideas.
  14. I am so sorry to hear of your loss persephone. RIP Dulcie and bubs.
  15. I knew a Pug that would contantly lick his paws, all night long, turned out to be a fungal infection, like tinia i guess, not sure what caused it,but the vet prescribed some cream and he hasnt done it since.
  16. Just got Wuggles some Canine Coutry BARF and a few lamb leg bones. The BARF was only $4.10 per kilo in a roll, alot cheaper than the original BARF at 20.00 for 2.75 kilos.Ill cut the lamb leg bones in half with a hack saw when i get home and pray he tries to chew on them. Thanks all for your ideas, knowledge and suggestions,i am going to keep researching though, just for curiosity's sake. And thanks to Muddles too for your kind help.
  17. How long would you leave a bone with a dog for.I mean,do i leave the bone on the ground for hours just incase he wants to come back to it,or do i throw it out because the flies have been on,or can i pick it up and put it back in the fridge for next time?
  18. Sounds like you have another Wuggles "the non chewer dog" there. Do you just buy the shanks from a butcher or the supermarket?are they Lamb shank bones? And should i get them cut for him or let him knaw on the whole thing?
  19. So sorry to hear about your loss, you did the right thing, you are very brave and so was Diesel,my heart goes out to both of you and your family.RIP Diesel.
  20. Hi PugRescue, with the large RMB's you feed the Puggies, what do you use.I have tried chicken wings, chicken necks(both whole and mashed a bit),beef brisket bones, lamb brisket bones and everytime i give him any bone,he does his best to swallow it whole, then he will chocke, cough it back up,chew a bit more and try again to swallow it whole.I dont give him chicken wings anymore,as he will only chew the tip off,and the rest he tries to swallow whole, reluctant with the chicken necks, and even the brisket bones he tries to swallow whole.he wont spend hours just chewing,i dont know if he gets bored,if he is really hungry,or he is just not the smartest pug in the world and doesnt know how to chew a bone properley.
  21. According to the book you can make up the 60% from any RMB's. Minced chicken frames/wings/necks is probably the easiest thing to get hold of already minced up though. Just ask your butcher to mince them up finely, should be easy enough. I DO add other meats (roo mince) as part of my own dogs diet. Can't see why not. I use fresh though, either old fruit/veg from the fridge or whatever is in the specials trolley at the supermarket. I use whatever I have around, normally apples, pears, bananas and oranges You could do either. Hope that helps eta. Puggy Puggy on this forum feeds her Pugs a raw diet. Maybe shoot her a PM Thanks so much for the advise and suggestions SecretKei,i will surely do alot more research, and read alot more books on the subject.I am actually looking forward to making my own BARF,i just want to make sure that i am doing right and with every essential food he needs in it.
  22. Is that true, Nature's Gift is the same as BARF patties? I have never bothered to read the ingredience in Natures Gift. I emailed Natures Gift to ask a few questions, and here is the response i got- "The only purpose dry food serves is to clean teeth unless it’s a meat based dry. As most dry foods are wheat based, they also delivery very little meat based protein to your dogs diet. As you would be aware with the barf diet, dogs require high levels of meat based protein. This is why your breeder would have recommended our canned food. Our food is 70% real meat with the rest made up from grains and vegetables. Only difference between ours and the barf diet is that we cook our ingredients in the can and seal in the goodness. " "What you have suggested about feeding one raw bone a week is perfect and your dog will thrive on our canned diet. You will see a difference in your dogs condition within a few weeks of using our food. It is complete and balanced and delivers the right amount of muscle meat protein your dog needs for optimal tissue growth and repair. "
  23. Thats pretty expensive burley .so what do you feed now? Now that would be easy enough for me to do,the only problem is that Wugs snorts his food(typical piggy pug),he doesnt chew,we did try the minced chicken frames, but we found alot of sharp bones that we were not comfortable giving to him,as he has had chocking problems before.
  24. Thanks SecretKei,Do you use a food processor to mix it all up,or can it just be chopped up and can i put everything in together and mince it all? Do the minced chicken frames make up the whole 60% of RMB,or do you add other meats to it?Can these frames be minced even more as so there are no sharp bones that could cause damage,as Wugs snorts his food,no chewing involved. Can you just use frozen Veges of all sorts to mince up? Can i use any fruits, mostly i would use bananas, apples, strawberries, and oranges? Are the 10% of yogurt, eggs (inc shells), garlic, flaxseed oil, sardines, etc all mixed in together,or do you use different ones for different batches? Thanks
