Tips For First Time Triallers
bedazzledx2 replied to wuffles's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Be consistent in your training and go in the ring the same way. This is hard because you now have someone judging you and people watching. Learn to trust in your training and train as you trial and trial as you train Concentrate on your job and that will take away some of the ring nerves...after all, you're too busy concentrating to be nervous right?! OK whats your job? First to pay attention to your dog and get focus at the start peg (you've trained that yes?) At the same time you must pay attention to the judge and be ready to follow orders...another thing to train Now you must concentrate on walking in a straight line, do the correct footwork for the turn (just the way you trained), cue the halt so your dog is not caught unprepared, transition smoothly into fast pace, decelerate and cue correct position....and on and on. I find the more I concentrate on getting my bit right the less nervous I become....and smile -
More pics of Isaac Note the green ear....poor little bugga got his working kelpie council tattoo today...yep he cried!!!

No worries...there will be other nights When can I do some practice with Brookie? Oh and there was a muesli thread in Off Topic on how to make your own, think I might give it a try! I love muesli, but not when they load it with sultanas, ick!! I'm not sure yet, got a work thing. Bummer they're on the same nights
-
Sorry forgot to answer this one....are you going to the Qld flood fundraiser? If you are you can have a play with him then When can I do some practice with Brookie? Oh and there was a muesli thread in Off Topic on how to make your own, think I might give it a try! I love muesli, but not when they load it with sultanas, ick!!

I was up at 4 but in no state to post anything!!!! Followed by a red wine chaser Bedazzled be warned I woke up this morning to fine the strap on my crocs destroyed. I thought by 8 1/2 months of age they should have finished the chewing stage - it seems not though. Think its funny to see the times on your postes 7.10am - unheardof

Yep that was me...raw low fat muslie...skim milk! I figure I have to get fit and lose some weight if I have any chance of running agility with this boy so the diet has started in earnest! I wasn't sure if that was you or not Little darling is at present playing with my feet with needle sharp teeth!!! We have a gazillion toys around here...why is it my feet or something he is not supposed to have???!!!! :D I plan to do Obedience, Agility and some 3 Sheep trialling with him. He is from really nice working lines so it would be a shame to waste that potential. Yep...look forward to catching up! Glad Daisy is feeling better and I hope Bondi feels better soon.

So true! My last kelpie was a winter baby and I still remember trying to get her to pee when it was raining...
-
...and now the 8 week old ones. I'm not used to these 5 am mornings!!!! He's very good though considering until now he was raised in a stone shed with a dirt floor attached to a run under tree. Actually the shed is very old and has walls 2 ft thick and was much cooler than anywhere else...pretty ideal for farm puppies really. Apparently crocs make great chew toys
-
Here goes... not easy and most are of him asleep as that's the only time he's still enough to photograph! Jasper's a grumpy old man and doesn't really like puppies much...he's told him off already. Trouble is that lovely waving Border Collie tail is just so enticing Brookie's a bit bemused and is madly throwing out calming signals. The first two are of butter wouldn't melt in my mouth 6 week old pup.

Its not set in stone yet... we have a couple of names that are growing on us... Binnaburra is his Prefix.
-
Exactly!!!!! :D I still think you should have called him Barry - I can just see it at presentations judges trying to say Binnaburra Barry Looking forward to meeting the little fella Bazzzzzaaaaaaaaaa!!!
-
Picked him up today....the choice came down to two boys. One quite pretty and the other a bit darker. I really wanted it to be the pretty one but the darker boy just had so much more attitude that I had to go for him. I'm delighted as he came in and settled immediately into the routine. He discovered the gold mine of Brookie's toys and quite likes Jaspers teddy bears He plays a good game of tuggy!!! Thanks...I'll upload some photos tomorrow. His name is Binnaburra Jack. Upload photos to somewhere like www.photobucket.com then grab the link to paste in here. The link to chose from photobucket is the one with [ img ] [ /img ] on either side of the url. So is the puppy actually home yet or not? And what name did you decide on (if any yet?) ;)

I got the naughty one!!! OMG!!! What have I let myself in for!?! Someone remind me how to upload photos please. Here is mum and dad and pups at 6 weeks http://www.youtube.com/user/bedazzledx2?feature=mhum

Probably best to go directly to the ANKC for the latest rules...there was some tweaks even after they were first posted. http://www.ankc.org.au/Rules.aspx I'll be happy to do a few SFE for you before you go in the ring if you like. Oh really?? I thought I read in the link you gave me that you do....will go off and read again that is good news then Now to try and get Lewis not to fidget after the recall!! Can't even twitch a finger or he moves!
-
and that's exactly what I have done Staranais. My kelpie puppy is from a registered (working sheepdogs registers) breeder and has a pedigree as long as your arm. For this breed, this is the path I prefer to travel. All my other dogs are from ANKC breeders. Well, to be fair, I don't either. I think your breeders are probably all great, but I've also met some great breeders who aren't MDBA members, and I wouldn't personally restrict my search for a dog to MDBA members (or to kennel club breeders, for that matter). Thats interesting - where else would you look for a good breeder? If I wanted a working dog, I'd personally be happy in some breeds to look at a non-kennel club affiliated breeder. ;)

I got black tar off a dogs feet using the orange based stuff remover I got from Bunnings (can't remember the name but its the one that works on sticky tape, chewing gum etc) Use a cotton ball and work on it bit by bit and when you're finished give the dog a good bath with dog shampoo and conditioner.

Training In Multiple Disciplines
bedazzledx2 replied to Tiggy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lots and lots of little bits of everything! Get your foundation work done and its just a matter of joining the dots from there. For both you need attention, focus, recalls (restrained recalls at first) Stay/wait. Play lots of games. Probably the most important thing you can teach him is to love learning. -
Clicker training is wonderful and will teach you heaps! The first things I would train is some tricks that don't have anything to do with formal obedience or agility. It is a very precise method of training and it is all too easy to train something you didn't mean to, so start with something that doesn't matter. 101 Things to do with a Box is a good start. Here is one site...there are many more if you Google http://www.netplaces.com/golden-retriever/...-with-a-box.htm

I don't know anything about sled dog training but honestly it looks like bedlam to me
