For Those Who Use No Pull Harnesses
Staff'n'Toller replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
who says that is what I do? I have many techniques using collars and only a few require corrections. A collar is a valuable tool with various different pressure points, placement and use. Maybe the art of using collars is just slipping away. It wasn't directed at you, it was just a general statement. -
Advance = Eukanuba Or Royal Canin?
Staff'n'Toller replied to muffinmclay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Unfortunately it depends what brand. Royal Canin are nice like that and even if it's 6 large and 4 small bags they will honour the size most purchased. Hills and Eagle Pack are not that way AFAIK. If you have a small bag on the card and the rest are large, well it's matched to the smallest size purchased. I have not bought EP for some time so happy to be corrected. -

I tend to take Cosmolo's tact, if you've ever had anything to do with shelter dogs or people who work with shelter dogs there's one crucial thing you have to keep in mind when someone comes to you with a pulling problem- and that's the bond the person has with the dog. It's easy for me to say this is how you stop pulling, and for the client to see that I can get the dog to stop pulling, but if the most important thing in the world is for the client to be able to walk their dog sans frustration, then it's important that it happens as soon as possible. For some clients the bond with their dog has almost evaporated and this is the last straw. It's all well and good for us to wave them goodbye one day with a dog that doesn't pull but if it doesn't happen for the client the next day- that could be it. As trainers we have to remember that not every dog walks out of our class with great manners just because we could produce it in class, because dogs are dogs, humans are humans and old habits are hard to break. Maybe the no-pull harness is there more for the human than the dog, if it is that way, then so be it. Whatever works I say. I also deal these days primarily with medium and small dogs, and many handlers can not bring themselves to give any hard corrections- it may stop the pulling- but they can't bring themselves to do it. Just because they let you do it in class or in a private lesson doesn't mean they like it. -
Linky There's a pdf book there called 'Before you get your puppy', it's a good one and it's free. ;)

Fresh mix has rice and pearled barley as the carbohydrate as a decent portion of the ingredients. Maximal has no rice or barley, so much higher in protein content.

I know for Hills and RC it has to be 10 bags at the same store or vet clinic because we have to lodge the receipts for the client. -
For Those Who Use No Pull Harnesses

With large breeds I gauge it on the dog and the owner combined. I do like them for Boxers that I would ordinarily like to put on a head collar but I don't fit head collars on Boxers as a rule. If the owners timing is really bad or they are apathetic as far as effort is concerned I put a head collar on. There seems to be an inordinate amount of owners in the area I work that are frightened their dog will slip a regular collar and run away... :D it's got me beat, I've come across a few that had dogs as children and dog escaped collar and got run over. I started off with the sensation harness, brought them in a few years ago with another trainer but I prefer to have the martingale style at the front, stops them slipping as much. -

I'd rate the Halti Harness easier than the Gentle Leader Easy Walk because there is only one clip and a snap hook that goes at the chest. The Gentle Leader- particularly the purple one, the belly strap is only a slightly different shade and sometimes that is even hard for me to see. At any rate - there's always you tube!!! -

I use it for guiding, I wouldn't say that I give 'pops' on the harness as such. The dogs seem to naturally find their boundaries with it but as with anything I have seen Labs etc. still bounding around and pulling into them if their handlers aren't attentive enough. I have also seen smooth coated dogs houdini out of them even when fitted as tightly as possible. In the Cert IV Comp Animal Services course Jenny Ireland from SA holds a session where she shows us her version which is practically the same as the gentle leader harness but made of cotton webbing, and shows her version of the double ended lead that you use as stop/go and left/right pressure indicators for the dog. Halti Harness The only problem with the Halti Harness is that they need one size smaller than their small size for the mini dogs. ;) Jenny is an obedience judge and since the Delta course is restructured she may do regular visits to Vic so you might be able to catch up with her about her design. Best Behaviour Dog Training was a big user of them but she is off on maternity leave AFAIK. -

I use it in conjunction with rewards for loose lead walking. My fav is the halti harness, I also use the gentle leader no pull but I think the halti harnesses fit better and don't slip. I find them great for dogs <15kg and toy dogs rather than a head halter. -
Sentinel is made by Novartis, I don't see any links there, only to Hedley Foods. There is no ingredient list or nutritional analysis. :D

Hi Kelpiechick, Yes on speaking with another doler we deduce it's that he doesn't totally understand the entries and he needs to do more in the extreme areas of the arc. I do have the dvd and the booklet, I have been following the book to the letter so far and it has been going well. I'm guessing that now that his accuracy has dropped, with your comments and others I can see that it's the entries that are the problem. Yes I have weave trained other dogs previously, he has some basic experience in channel weaves but I would like him to understand the whole package and want to be able to send him to the weaves, he is quite good at driving forward. I can send him or I can run beside the weaves and either way he is fine (with 4). We have changed environments and he does weave 4 with distraction. There could be too much reinforcement value as his intention does seem to shortcut, however Tollers will generally do things a bazillion different ways, it's just in their nature, before I owned one, being a trainer I would have said that was pure BS but you have to work one to understand. What do you feel is missing out of the DVD? Do you mean that I would find the answers in her blog of critiqued videos? Yes I'm at ADCV we are only in class 2. Myself and another girl are teaching 2x2 and that seemed to be fine, are you insinuating that some instructors won't be happy that we are teaching another style and will force us to do channel??? We had enough weaves the other night that we broke off into groups and I was able to space them where Geordie is at right now and send him through a couple of times so it worked out ok. Thanks for your comments it gives me a few things to think about.

Maybe we should just organise one? ETA: Espresso Van is my only other requirement. -
You still haven't stated the name of the medication. As far as light proof containers, another company supply their non-steroidals in white containers but supply us with clear containers so obviously it does not matter if they are exposed to light. I can understand what you're saying about the expiry dates, but packaging advice goes back to the manufacturer. If it's imperative that whatever you were dispensed is kept away from light it's the manufacturers responsibility to ensure everyone knows- that's what drug reps are for. It could be that the Vet Clinic have never been told and storage advice is not in the animal mims...don't assume they are doing the wrong thing on purpose. Mel.

PM me your email address and I will forward you the document for the lady who makes them in Vic.

Sorry I should have explained that, I did add the 5th and 6th poles at the beginning opened but that's when he started skipping them, so I tried them at the end- still open.
-
Ok, I'm working on 2x2 with Geordie, he was doing 4 poles really well so they are nearly straight and I've added 2 more poles at 1o'clock/7o'clock. He will do them 50% of the time, so obviously that's how they need to stay until our success rate gets higher. However, he's decided that the other options are to enter with the first pole to his right shoulder, thus missing the first two poles, or entering on the left but again missing the first two poles. Soooo this evening I moved the 5th and 6th poles and put them at the end at the 1/7 position, same effect, maybe marginally better. ;) I have a few theories in my head but wanted to open it up to the floor, one is that I am going to stop using an NRM when he stuffs it, because I've never been quite sure what effect it has on him anyway, the other is that my bridge for correct weaves *good* is not as strong as the clicker so I'm toying with using the clicker temporarily. 2 things: I know SG says NOT to use a clicker so they are driving forward not looking back at you....it's just a thought that came into my head. When he does it, he does it very well, he is manouvering very well like he understands it. ;) Shanks. ;)

If there is normal formed poo you would have to think it's kennel cough or the hose has caused irritation to the gut lining. -
I think a lot of people are still quite peeved about losing their money and given the GFC, VCA run clubs that have a vastly lower fee structure may be the only alternative for many dog handlers. Luckily there is an abundance of NDTF qualified trainers not only here on the forum but in Vic since the course originated here so people have options for private lessons or a few of the other private clubs still running who train in the same way.
