Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
mita replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
I knew a nice couple near Brisbane who adopted 2 little chihuahuas who had that same neurological problem. They'd trot along, then topple over...& happily get up again & keep going as if nothing bad had happened. Like Jed's Chi Chi, they lived a protected, happy & much loved life. I'd hope for concentrated local efforts on finding Magnus....rangers, posters up, leaving piles of kibble at his home site, Caboolture Community Radio, searching the area. There's a rescue group in Caboolture...they'd have a network of doggie people (Caboolture & Districts Animal Welfare). -

Lighting a candle is a symbol of hope. A light in the darkness. The threads about Jed are full of hope that she recovers well & that her dogs & other pets are safe. It was a fitting suggestion someone made, to light a candle...& raise a glass...for her. -
Gets better & better. It's great he's gone to people experienced with Malamutes. Thanks for letting us know it's likely a very happy ending for Bear/Shadow.

Great news, Holly. The AWL-'pound' must've done well by him.
-
Thank goodness, there's possible new home....or, at least, fostercare. Whoops! Who's 'they'? I assumed if the dog is in the pound, 'they' must be the Animal Welfare League. I agree with Anne.....the most sensible thing to do is contact the 'pound'-AWL to find out what's happening for the dog. He's now in their hands.

There's a Caboolture District Community Radio station that broadcasts info of interest to the specific area. (The council actually uses it in times of emergency). http://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/living.aspx?id=6019 Someone who knows the details about the missing cocker, Magnus, should contact them to spread request to find him or report sightings. From Council: The station operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing programs of general interest to Shire residents including a news service on the hour as well as sport and other valuable community information. Phone: (07) 5495 1015 Fax: (07) 5495 1598 Email: [email protected] -
Good thinking. I googled & found this statement from the Mt Gambier Council: “The South East Animal Welfare League... is the formal “pound” to which Council places all impounded dogs And here's the South East Animal Welfare League of Mt Gambier's website, with contact details: http://southeastanimalwelfare.weebly.com/ I'd guess the SEAW would tell if this 'pound' arrangement still holds.

Does anyone know Shadow's breeder to contact? Also the AM Club of Victoria has a page which sets out AM's needing new homes in all states. The name of the person who runs this page is given, with a telephone no. OK, she's in Victoria, but may know of contacts in SA who can help. They actually ask people to contact them: AN EASY WAY YOU CAN ASSIST US WITH MALAMUTE RESCUE: If you see a Malamute listed in an animal shelter that is not on our website, please email us at [email protected] or contact Sandy by phone on (no on website). The sooner they are listed with us the more chance we have of saving them. http://www.amcv.org.au/referral%20list.htm

That is the most amazing kindness of all. -
Oh, my god. Apart from physical injuries, Jed loved her dogs with all her being.

People Copying Word For Word From Your Website

Yep, do so, Oz. You've uncovered one way that impression can be given that someone is a current member. So a good thing for QCCC to keep an eye out. It's sure made us DOLers more aware! -

I think you've achieved something important. I'd still let the Qld CCC know....& you have other witnesses, too... that the site was previously using their logo. They might be interested to know how their logo can be used to give impression of registration. -
Please Help. My Daughter Is Terrified Of Our Dog.
mita replied to boxerfamily's topic in General Dog Discussion
I found an article from the SMH, which explains dog phobia (among other phobias). A research fellow & clinical psychologist at the University of NSW provides the background....Dr Adam Guastella. May be one way to track down a professional who'd be familiar re children. Trouble is article dates to 2005 & may have moved on. (A google search found he's moved on to the University of Sydney.) http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/11/03/1130823319617.html -
Please Help. My Daughter Is Terrified Of Our Dog.
mita replied to boxerfamily's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was thinking on similar lines re the choice of a boxer. But I agree the OP has tried to do her best by her daughter & the pup. And continues to do so. Not that I'm suggesting that the OP go out & buy a tibbie. But I wish I were in Sydney to see how the daughter goes when gently introduced to my small, calm tibbie girls. They look more like small, pretty monkeys! And they're cat-like in their behaviour. You can actually test this via a photo. People with a phobia will react to a photo but at slightly lesser intensity, if the subject triggers it. What I am suggesting is that the OP seek some professional help for what is a phobia (as she's menioned herself). It will be difficult for the daughter to go thro' life & totally avoid coming across dogs in the community. As the OP's described, she has severe signs of anxiety when she even sees one nearby. My warmest wishes to the OP in working thro' this situation. (Meant to add....certainly contact the pup's breeder.) -
There are 2 very experienced groomers in our north-western area of Brisbane. One is at The Gap & someone near us takes his beautiful sheltie to her. And he's happy with the results. There's another one with a salon at Keperra. Salon's name is Auntie Marg's. 'Auntie Marg' does an occasional hygiene clip on our tibbies in summer, that retains their breed appearance.

That's inferring current membership. Maybe track down the status of the person re being registered....& for what....via the Qld CCC. They'd have a vested interest in where their logo appears. -
I agree. And that includes all the on-going advice that those kind of registered breeders generously offer. Like, I'm off now to get the opinions from the best Oz & international breeders re safety of dog chews after our scarey experience.

I found this from a CBS source. Both Greenies & Nylabone can break off in lumps that get stuck in the gullet BEFORE the digestive juices can go to work in the stomach. Greenies get a bad rap re digestability. The emergency vets quoted said the same as the Brisbane emergency vets (& our own vet, too). http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/08/...in1987520.shtml But our own vet pointed out that dogs gulp all sorts of things down...rocks, sticks, seed pods. Our dog was lucky, because when she was put under an anaesthetic, the total relaxation allowed the lump of rawhide to move into her stomach.
-
I'm a worrier. Not sure I like the idea of something being 'flavoured' (by us, or made that way) yet unsafe for our dogs to ingest. Problem with these things is that if pieces are ingested, they aren't going to be consumed by the dog's intestinal enzymes so that they can more easily pass without issue. Erny, I'm a worrier, since last weekend. :D Our 10 yr old dog was rushed to vet emergency last weekend with a bit of rawhide stuck in her gullet. Vets there said danger spot was the gullet....if rawhide made it to the stomach, then the digestive processes sort it OK. Someone in another thread mentioned that Nylabone was recommended, in place of things like rawhide, in the breed handbook. I don't know anything about Nylabone. That's why I was looking for info. Like any tendency to break into gullet-sticking lumps & how digestible. Just saw your assurance on digestabiity, Cosmolo. Thanks. ;)
-
Erny, you can see why I answered, very carefully, the vets who remarked on the extraodinary good health of our 10 yr old. I didn't say, it's because she's purebred. I said it's because she's a purebred from damn good registered breeders who up the chances of a dog being sound. I highlighted 'upping the chances' to show that there can still be mischance in what's produced. When we went looking for our purbred breeds of choice....we researched the breeders as much as the breed. One of those registered breeders recently offered us another adult dog....needless to say, I jumped at it. I follow the route where the chances are higher for soundness. But that doesn't mean mischances are eliminated. Just lowered. I'm sorry for your experience. It's not just the money, is it. It's hard for an owner to see their dog suffer from medical problems.
-
Good thinking. Nothing like imagining the old hip pocket being hit. Our 10+ yr old purebred girl was rushed to the vet hospital last weekend for getting some rawhide stuck in her gullet (my fault for giving it!). They gave her a swag of tests because she was needing a general anaesthetic...& she's a senior dog. First, the vets said going just by her appearance, they couldn't believe she was 10 years old. Then they said, from the results of the tests, she was in perfect health....& amazing for 10 yrs. They started to congratulate me. But I pointed out she was a purebred from a bloodline where the registered breeders knew what they were doing for high chance of producing an all-round sound dog. Unusual? Well no....our late elderly dog of the same breed, had not one vet problem (apart from one tooth taken out as a senior) in her entire life. And before that, our purebred of another breed, had that same record. Never a vet problem in her entire life, until she got a touch of arthritis at age 14 yrs. Once again, from damn good registered breeders who knew what they were doing...which upped the chances of soundness.

I've just been looking for them because they were recommended on another thread. (Someone there suggested simmering a Nylabone in stock to make it more appealing to the dog.) Found this Pet Supplies (online) place in Victoria, which has 2 pages of Nylabone products: http://www.petsplus.com.au/pet-supply-products.asp?page=1

Can only say, I agree about the beauty of the Welsh Springer Spaniels. And those big standard poodles are great dogs.

I'm glad you asked this question. After I got my new Mazda, I received a long survey from the Mazda Co, asking for feedack on how satisfied I was with the car. All the questions revolved around things like camping, off-road driving....as if every car owner was into the great outdoors, driving trials & rally driving.. So I sent an email to Mazda, pointing out the survey had nothing to do with women's lives....like transporting children & shopping AND restraining pets & their crates (like getting puss's carry crate into the back seat). I told them I'd heard that Honda was responding to the needs of pet owners by incorporating things into the design of a Honda, that would make pet transport, safety & comfort better. Got a very nice email back from Mazda (signed by a woman!) saying she thought they were valid & necessary issues. And that they'd be taken to the meeting where feedback about design is considered.
