Here's a pic of Esky's collection of Pekes that she once posted on DOL. I've kept it squirreled away because they're so gorgeous & as a reference check when figuring if a rescue is Peke or Tibbie. Click to enlarge. Enjoy!

There is something of a tibbie 'look' or gaze, isn't there :) Which is why there's often a question asked around rescue when the background of the dog is not known...."Is that a Tibbie or a Peke?'. Esky's been a great reference person over the years, re Pekes. Have a look at this collection of p/b Tibbies & how some (specially towards the right) have a Peke-ish look. Click to enlarge: Tibbie breeders told me to spot the difference in their eyes & muzzles. Pekes have round eyes, Tibbies' are almond-shaped. Pekes have folds on their muzzle, Tibbies don't.

Andisa, the pug & rottie photos are gorgeous. One of the Victorian registered breeders used to breed rotties & tibetan spaniels (which are a bit like pugs with more hair! :) )

All well said.

Lovely photos. I showed the one with the 6 BCs to a friend who is madly seriously in love with the breed. She is in Border Collie Heaven. :)

Lovely site. Thanks for the heads-up.

I agree with you. Our little mixed breed had a dental at age 19 yrs. Healthy little creature .... this was the first veterinary procedure she'd ever had, since desexing. It gave her a more comfortable 3 more years. Her operation was done by a university clinic vet who specialized in dental work. Seems the day before he operated on our Gran, he'd done work on a tiger at Dreamworld. He talked about how he'd developed particular veterinary anaesthetic procedures for the more frail elderly dogs. And he'd learned these procedures from human doctors who use them on very small, very ill babies. He said his own little baby had benefited from that.

I have an excellent vet ... who doesn't rush straight into medication or procedures. She has a sense of proportion, based on the condition that's presenting. If it can be confidently treated with 'natural' means, that's what she recommends. So whenever she says that medication or a procedure is necessary, I know it is.

I agree that the proposition requires more research. But makes some sense that a new model which assures public safety by focusing on behaviours, would be matched with increased awareness, reporting & recording of 'bite' behaviours. Good news is that the focus has gone off pursuing certains breeds.... totally disassociated from actual reported behaviours. Mel has a good point that even the increased dog bite stat, is quite low given the size of the population. There's some comfort in the fact that incidence of dog aggression against humans tends to be pathetically low when compared with human aggression against fellow humans. Statistically dogs are more peaceful fellow 'citizens' than humans.

Good on you, Rosetta, for setting the record straight. The whole business was captured on film It was thigh-deep in pounding surf. In the night, only lit up by a police helicopter hovering above.. The dog handler & 2 other officers (who jumped from their jet ski) were wrestling with a huge offender who was throwing punches viciously. He'd already defied police for a couple of hours & was determined not to be taken down. So with 3 officers & the police dog struggling in pounding surf in poor light ..... all in a heaving mass of bodies.... the dog latched on to the wrong limb. It was not a focused attack on its handler. If it'd been a few inches in another direction, it would've been the out of control offender who would've been bitten. And the dog praised for doing its job.... as it was primed for 'work'. Pepe, I have to disagree with you, especially calling the officers names... 'idiots'. The police had been trying to hours to get this bloke. They didn't choose the circumstances he fled to. They did their best in a rotten situation....

I agree with you 100% Anne! T. Me, too. Need to have some perspective about dogs being dogs. One sensible thing that's helped with dog parks around here, was that a separate section was made for the small dogs. So it just takes the size imbalance out of any argy bargy. -
SG, could that rise in aggressive dog incidents be related to reporting awareness & protocols associated with a new comprehensive system? if a dog management system has strong public safety goals based on actual dog behaviours, then reporting of behaviours would get priority. Rather than relying mainly on breed identification. Not saying this is the explanation. Just wondering.

"beware Of Dog" Sign Makes You Liable?

OSS, again in Brisbane. Bloke with evil intent, broke thro' a locked side gate in a suburban house. Walked straight into a German Shepherd. Not any GSD.... the unlucky bloke had picked the home of a police dog handler. Handler was upstairs having a shower. Bloke took off, pursued by the police dog, who cornered him against a fence. Neighbours phoned the police who came promptly & took over from the GSD... who amused them by jumping into the back seat of a police car. All explained when dog handler came running up the road, having heard the sirens. -

Brisbane police were chasing an offender, on foot, in the suburbs. Bloke was doing a good job of evading them. Then he jumped a fence & landed on top of a very surprised rottweiler. Rottie bit him & held him by the leg. Article in newspaper said the police caught up, took the bloke to hospital for treatment for the bite ... & thanked the rottie. -
"beware Of Dog" Sign Makes You Liable?

This morning tradesman came to put up new blinds in a bedroom. Beforehand, I secured the 2 dogs in their enclosure. No worries about the puss, tho'. Man was working away in the bedroom & I suddenly heard him give a yell. Thought he'd fallen off the ladder. Seems he put a tool on the bed.... & the cat flew out from under the bedclothes. Nearly gave him a heart attack. I'll be adding '...And you can't trust the cat' to the dog sign. :) -

A bit of class here, please, Anne .... dog poo is being spun. Sounds like a craft to me, not a fight. -

I'm having a horrible mental image of someone 'spinning dog poo.' Your posts are revealing. Now there's another person in your scope... 'in all forms of contacts'. -

"beware Of Dog" Sign Makes You Liable?

For the same reason, we had a sign saying 'Caution: Dogs' on our side gate. Most strangers coming in, tended to then keep away from the backyard. Only reason for that wording.... was that I felt a bit silly putting 'Beware of the Dogs' on a gate behind which were 2 little tibbies. Friends, without dogs, moved into a house in Brisbane. Then found something strange was happening. Tradespeople & delivery persons would phone them & ask was it OK to come to the front door. Puzzle solved when they found a 'Beware of the Dog; sign at the beginning of the long driveway. Previous owners had put it there... & they just hadn't noticed it. And... yes... after seeing how it made strangers stop & think before coming up the driveway... they left it there. -
The Community Relations Commission in NSW offers translation services ... includes to community groups & individuals. Over 100 languages covered. It means that no longer does the Council have to prove that the dog is a Pit Bull. If the Council says it is, then it is - unless you can prove that it isn't. This will see hundreds and hundreds (more) innocent dogs killed, most of them mixed breeds without any 'pit bull' at all. ETA: Basically, the dog is guilty unless proven innocent. But this is exactly what led to outright slaughter of innocent family dogs in Qld. Are any lobby groups, like that Barristers' animal welfare group, fighting this amendment?
