Oh how I WISH it was me that had to wake her up! Maybe I just need to find a way of securing the gaps in the baby door till she grows a bit bigger and cant slep thru them? Any suggestions for that? Our idea was that she sleep in the ensuite until she was COMPLETELY toilet trained and THEN move to just sleeping in her bed in our room hence the reason we bought the baby gate...we were going to make the transition when ready.

How exactly do they propose you stop her going to the loo - with a cork?? Or are continued accidents inside an acceptable part of this program? Put the crate in the ensuite.. put her bed or bedding in it and leave the door of the crate open. Toss in a treat at bedtime and my guess is she'll solve that problem for you. I find having a crate where you are, but leaving the door open, feeding etc in it will encourage use. Just buy one that's easy to move around the house initially. But she will still have free range of the house then? She will be free to get up, walk out, go wonder, pee/poo as she pleases... OR am I still putting someone across the doorway of the ensuite WITH the crate in there?

Okay...so I buy the crate...get her used to it over the weekend...what do I do about this sleep issue in the meantime? How do I make the transition from ensuite to crate without her crying blue murder? THATS the thing I can't handle...I know myself and I know I will give in to her yells!

Dogs are social animals - the pack sleeps together. Having your dog sleep in the same room as you is an appropriate thing to do IMO. Problem with pens as I see them is that many dogs can climb out of them and therefore they aren't really safe to leave a dog in unsupervised for any length of time. A pen also provides space for a pup to eliminate away from where it eats and sleeps. That won't help with toilet training. You could always buy a crate and sell the pen to offset your costs. A good crate can be used when you travel, for trips to the vet, in the car etc.. a pen can't. For a dog of Poppy's size, I'd suggest an airline approved crate like a Vari Kennel or similar. Not cheap but will last forever. You can get PP 40's for a good price. I'm glad your able to validate my feelings of wanting her close! Another forum I'm on are telling me to stop treating her like a baby, put her in the main bathroom, let her cry it out and dont go to her till the next morning! I just dont think I can do it! Can you give me a link of the type of crate your talking about? I found these... http://brisbane.gumtree.com.au/c-Pets-pet-...QAdIdZ186390849 http://brisbane.gumtree.com.au/c-Pets-pet-...QAdIdZ183758952 http://brisbane.gumtree.com.au/c-Pets-pet-...QAdIdZ184631596 http://brisbane.gumtree.com.au/c-Pets-pet-...QAdIdZ184516361 I'm thinking to bottom two are TOO small?

Poodlefan - Could I use her playpen for her to sleep in? The reason I ask is that I payed A LOT for it and we only really use it when we go out. So instead of buying a crate and using that...could we just use the pen? Am I being too smothering by wanting to have her in our room? I guess I just thought thats where dogs sleep but maybe I'm wrong!

Thanks for the link!

Ok so if we were to do crate training where do I start? How big should the crate be? Should I get rid of the playpen? Do I put her in the crate - with her bed - and close the door on the first night and expect her to just sleep through? Or will she cry and carry on?
-
I was thinking about this...but wondered if she would HATE it! How would I get her used to a crate? Its set up in the kitchen/dining/lounge open plan area. So not close to where we sleep at all. We COULD set it up near our front door - so just outside our room...but I think she would object to being in there while we are in the room BIG TIME!!!

We have a CKCS X who will be 11 weeks old on Sunday. She sleeps in our ensuite. We bought a baby gate to go up but she just walks through the bars! Haha! So I covered them in cardboard boxes...she chewed threw it! So we went back to the good old suitcase in the doorway trick. That worked well until recently when she bacame strong enought to push the suitcase and get out. She sleeps till 4am or 5am and then decides its time to get out of the ensuite! Admitingly we have let her do this, taking her out to toilet and then leaving her with her bed and toys and TV for company in the large open planned tiled area. This morning she escaped at 4am and my fiance put her just outside our bedroom door with her bed and closed the door...when I got up at 6am she was in her bed sleeping outside our door!!! So...my question is...should we change where she sleeps? I know that giving in to her is teaching her that its ok to get out in the middle of the night but its SOOOOOO hard to lie there listening to her carry on at 4am when you know you have to get up at 6am! We have a bathroom at the other end of the house that we could use...she also has a wire playpen...our laundry is not really an option as its in our double LUG. Any advice welcome!

Maybe if costs can be modelled to see if, by making dog rego more affordable & a once only matter.....it would eventually lessen dog management expenses? Are you talking about registaring dogs with the council? Have you looked at the costs of this on the Ipswich City Council Website? I don't know how much cheaper it can get...yes complete dogs are more exxy than de-sexed ones but so they should be IMO! Why? So to *TRY* and prevent BYB/Puppy Farms. I will be desexing my female dog as I don't want her to have puppies...yes I could make good money from her having pups down the track but its not ethical and there are soooooooo many people doing this!!!

I would notify the council for sure. Don't expect her to pay to get the microchip, but at least let them know all that's happened. Thanks...should I be notifying the council that I bought her in? Not the one I live in?

16 Week Puppy Wakes Up At 4am And Won't Go Back To Sleep
PoppyDog replied to springer11's topic in Puppy Chat
You just described life with our 12 week old CKCS X!!! She has been waking at 1am, 2am, 3am and thinking sleep time is over! She sleeps in our ensuite and is close to us so I think its an attention seeking thing now as we gave in a few times and put her out in the tiled area with her bed, toys and the T.V on for company! Anyway...last night we got tough, she stayed up with my fiance, he took her out JUST before he came to bed and she slept until 5.30am!!! Yay!!! My vet reccomended lifting her water at around 7 or 8 each night so that she wasn't drinking and needing to pee every couple of hours so that may of helped too! Good luck! I can't wait till our puppy learns to sleep in! LOL! -
I agree! I didn't realise the why crossbreeds were frowned upon until I went to another forum and talked about my CKCS X Cavoodle! She is a beautiful dog and I would pick her again in a heartbeat! It DID break my heart however to go into the local pet shop (when buying some Aloeveen shampoo for Poppy) to see CKCS X Maltese puppies! Buy all that stuff online PD. You'll save a fortune and keep your $$$ out of the pockets of those that support puppy farmers. Ahhh....Can you give me some links? I went to Pet Good Directs coz it has no pets but its owned by PP and is SO exxy so ditched that idea! Would love some online shops!

She was a star pupil! I did the whole strong and confident thing and the vet commented on how well we are doing with her and what a good pup she was! She vac'd her and chipped her, checked her over, checked her anal glands (as she has been scooting even tho she has been wormed twice) and was very happy with her. She went through the care of a puppy with me. When to worm her, flea treatment, nutrition etc but then said "Oh well I know your doing all this anyway" as I had talked about it with her during the consult. Poppy has a red bottom from scooting so we got some cream to put on twice a day for that. Incavale - She did mention desexing, said I had to wait till 6 months. Why did you wonder about that?

Hi Everyone! My 10 week old CKCS X will be going to the vet tomorrow for her 2nd vac and to be microchipped. Do you have any tips/advice to make this a positive experience for puppy and/or us? Should I take treats with me to give her? TIA!

What a small world! I grew up in a town about an hour from Gunnedah! I went to the local girls private school and Adam Marshall went to the boys school. He is very young so perhaps has not much of an idea about this sort of thing...

Thanks Everyone! I agree $5 is not worth it! She is being chipped tomorrow! I hope she doesnt yelp to loudly or I might tear up! Lucky my fiance will be there to be the strong one! FD26 - I haven't notified the council...I wasn't sure it was worth it. I haven't even asked the seller to pay for the micro-chipping. What do you think I should do? When I rang my vet to ask about it they asked straight away if I had got my puppy from a pet shop as if to say that if I had she should of been chipped already.
-
Thanks everyone! I think I will get her chipped when we go to have her 2nd vac. Poodlefan - Sorry...she is a crossbreed...but very Cav so thats how I think of her
-
Thanks, I'm not sure about the kelp either. Did you have much difficulty getting a cav. I've been trying for a tri male for ages? No, I didnt find it hard. BUT I didn't buy from a reputable breeder I didnt have all the knowledge I have now when I got my pup. She is actually a Cavalier X Cavoodle. :D

Hi Everyone, My 9 week old CKCS is not micro-chipped. I spoke to my vet this morning and she said there is a $5 discount if you do it when you de-sex them. BUT females have to be 5 or 6 months before they get de-sexed...so my question is... Would you chip now? Or chip later? I'm not sure I'm ok with having her not micro-chipped for the next 6 months. ESPECIALLY after reading the thread about Ipswich council pound (we live in that area). So what do you all think?
-
My 9 week old CKCS has a pink and black spotty nose. It has definately gotten blacker since we have had her though. Someone reccomended adding kelp to their food to help the nose black up but I was told it will be black by 12 weeks and a breeder I spoke to said they didnt know if kelp actually worked.

How horrible and scary!!! I live in Ipswich and this just adds to my list of why I don't leave my puppy outside alone!!!

Whatever is fun. Does Poppy know her name? Teaching her to come to that is a good start, call, come and praise. showing her a treat and slowly holding it up past her head so she automatically sits, then saying "Sit" and treating immedieatley.. Once they are down pat, try having her sit and then holding the treat out of reach on the floor encouraging her to drop for it. Following with the word "Drop" and immediate treat. Dont say the word untill she does it, if she wont do it, get her up and start again. She does know her name but only comes about 75% of the time so that would be a good starting point I think! We will be going to Puppy Preschool in the first week of March for 4 weeks! After that I will look into obediance classes!
