  1. But I dont give any answers!! I only have complicated questions and commnents!! OK I do provide some of my own observations but you should know Amhailte that I have ever in my life owned ONE dog and now I got a second one. And as you might remember my first one is not ideal. (Although he did seem to be ideal on Saturday during the dobe meet) I - like you learn a lot from these subjects, its often more about learning the theory for me than actually a desire to put it into practice, but it certainly is usefull and gives me an opportunity to see that if I do/dont apply this - that happends. On that note - I got my dog at 3 or so months old, hence in the beginning of the fear impact period. There was no socialisation done before the fear impact period done at all. What happends than? Introduce the dogs to things AFTER the fear impact period has finished? or gently during? Im talking about things like cars, traffic, masses of people, kids, other non agressive dogs, noises etc. I belive that K9 says lock the dog up for the period, but what if you have missed out on the original socialisation period? Lets use a different word than socialisation - how about introduction of things to the dog during the fear impact period. Thanks to everyone contributing, starting of course with the original poster, I love the subject as well, its fascinating.
  2. I think she got the idea of the command - not sure but when I take her out and say to her what to do she does it. And lest say an hour later she will do it on command again. She still gets excited and does drip a bit. OH came from work today she run to the door to say hello, drippppp when she got to him all happy.
  3. Just as a clarification - Ive never left them together unattended. Rex was inside the house when I went to work, while Divani was outside. So in effect they will be closer to each other now. Hello Amhailte. Im flattered to be included in the same sentence as Erny and K9 but honestly I DO NOT belong in the category of people that could be answering serious questions such as this one. I can only tell you from the 2 week observation that my new dog has a positive value for my family and often visiting friends as well as my dog, and has no value for strange dogs or strange people, she is actually quite aloof with strangers. So far I have let her go towards other dogs (that I know very well and only after setting up the scenario with the other owners) and say hello - that is meet for the 3 second interaction, than she was to go with me. I have noticed that she isnt really interested in going towards them as much any more. I think if given the oportunity she of course would, but she gets no opportunities
  4. She emptied outside and run home - I guess she was cold. I called her and showed her the toy which she chased for maybe 30 seconds and I finished her wanting more. I walked around for her to do nr 2 she didnt so I went inside she calmed down, we were inside for 5-10 minutes when they walked in.
  5. I have just had a fence and gate that divides my yard installed. Hence the dogs will both be outside but separate while Im at work. Call it that she will be in a huge pen with grass and trees in it. They will be able to see each other and smell each other through the fence, is that a problem?
  6. A prime example of her peeing just happened. OH took Rex out for a run. I took her to the yard for toilet and a bit of a chasing of the toy. Got back in the house and she just walked around following me. OH walked in with Rex. She went to them all happy and did a little squat while greeting them. Im interested if this is over stimulation for her? Do I call that to much stress? She doesnt do it all the time, just occasionally and it has reduced in the two weeks I have her.
  7. she will go outside empty herself and if she is stired up a lot in play she will do a little puddle. Might be a nervous trick. I only have her for 2 weeks.. she isnt toilet trained fully as well. Not only in the house, lets say I come back from work and she sees me she gets excited heaps even before I get to the gate and I can see her squat for a split second. Could be weak nerves/stress. For few days in the beginning she'd pee in the crate as soon as Id put her in there, when she was going into histerics about being locked up. She doesnt do it any more. I have been told that her dam would do a simmilar thing, when she was excited she often pee a little. She grew out of it with time.
  8. Jefe's owners - that is fantastic, thank you I guess this is the bit where I have my problems/questions? Problems is not the right word I actually enjoy it. Yeah my dog wants to be with me, however she doesnt walk around and sit next to me, She runs around like a lunatic stealing and chewing things, jumping up, barking at Rex, hangs of my clothes while I walk around. OK it isnt for the 6 hours you calculated but lets say for the 3-4. hence my question is do I crate her than? As she is getting satisfaction from activities that are not desired. isnt that a bad thing in a long run. I am not talking about my dog as Im kind of in an oposite situation, just curious. Absolutly!!! I ahve repeatedly tried to find people for my older dog and repeatedly failed, well lets see how Saturday dobie meet goes.. Perhaps finding people with dog isnt a problem but I found finding people that have NEUTRALISED dogs basically impossible. I must be looking in the wrong spots I think.
  9. sorry had to ask one more q. before I left ;) Im wondering if dogs that are isolated in a pen and are only taken out for short burst of training session, potentially not enough times a day, with nothing to do in the pen will develop some undesireable behaviours such as licking the paws, chasing the tail chronic barking etc. What are the experts opinions/experiences on that? Looking forward to reading the replies tomorrow.
  10. Looks like Im doing it right than. if only ms "Im way to excited" stopped peeing herself in the house when she gets excited.. lm hoping she will grow out of it soon.
  11. Im off to do some drive buiding and to asses the garden damage guys wish me luck ;)
  12. Happy with my lawn now? ;) thats 18 months ago, now its a lot worse....
  13. ;) that was taken about 3 years ago - right now I have patches of grass but mainly a mud paddock. majority of the yard has not grown grass for years. My dogs are together only when Im at home and than not really all the time together as I walk Rex by himselft, plus he doesnt really want to play with her and just watches the world from the sofa. She of course "annoys" him or me or my OH. They might play as in a dog play maaaaybe 10 minutes a day and I try to limit this as much as I can. And no doubt she has a positive value for him already. We all go to the backyard for the dog to toilet, he looks out for the possums, she sniffs the ground, jumps around herself or with me. he runs with other dog? gaining a positive value for the other dog?
  14. Mine is by herself in the backyard, no toys apart from what she manages to find there - sticks, leaves, plants stones. And Im sure she finds stuff for herself to entertain herself in the 10 hours Im away. To give you an idea this is my yard - it looks a LOT bigger in the photo than it actually is Looks like Ill have to cut down the trees (not only mine but the neighbours and on the golf course next door) and concrete the grass.... or quit work or work from home or be sick and be home. Endless possibilities ;)
  15. Im away at work for about 10 hours each day Mon - Fri.... what to do than?
  16. and the other 23 1/2 hours? he jsut hangs around doing nothing? I read that this is not recommended... in the 3 weeks drive building period.
  17. How much time a day do you spend on it BP? What age is you puppy, do you do anything other than the drive developement?
  18. do a search on a Socialisation and Neutralisation subject done by K9 heaps of info there.
  19. I have asked what does the dog do when I dont do stuff with it - such as while Im at work for the 10 hours of every day. She will find ways of satysfying herself unless I cut out the trees, and concrete the yard there will be things there to chase, look at, bark at, dig etc. Im a practial type of a person... - Id much more preffer a demo becouse I have heard the theory several times and obviously dont get it, such as in this example leaves me cuddling her on the sofa... or doing more sessions, which she might not be genetically designed to do. I might not be able to get 3 minutes out of her to start with.
  20. so what does the dog do all the other time? Crate/pen for the other 23 hours and 51 minutes a day? No bedding as well? Re child - had to do that as I have noticed that my dog was affraid of kids, Id rather have the dog have a positive value to the child than negative, if Im not commited enough to make the child a neutral value to the dog. she was and she was hitting the collar on a tie out not ONCE and wanted the ball more at the end of the session that I did at 7pm she was tired with other activities - such as the child interaction later at night. ball
  21. ;) at least mine so far has been in Polish, cant be only somewhat embarising
  22. So whats the correction for non compliance? ;) fill up?
  23. I meant how do you know over time (not on the day) that you have developed the drive high enough for you to start adding the focus stuff and commands. Or does the drive continually develop over time until it reaches the dogs genetic capability? Than how do you know you got there? Im imagining not many people actually do get there with their dogs (if the dogs are extra smart).
  24. Im currently house training my baby and thoought about training her to toilet on command. Its not something that I desperatelly want to achieve, but perhaps. So how do I do it? Apart from the normal toilet training stuff, and adding a command what else if anything?
  25. Sorry forgot the question ;) How do I know when to stop the ball chasing activity, the 3x3x3x7 rule I understand but how do I know if I got a desired amount of drive developed?
