  1. Hi, Does anyone know of a specialist orthopod in Newcastle/Lake Mac area? Alot of vets advertise that they do 'orthopedic surgery" but I doubt they have qualifications. Thanks, K
  2. Oh dear I think my main point may have been missed. I am all for the correct placement of rescue dogs, it's just that I have found some shelters wanting to "off-load" 2 puppies, especially an active breed like that i wish they would get the people to read all the problems siblings can bring, and maybe think a week or so about taking 2, especially after having only 1 small breed. I know the shelters foster people do an AWESOME job, but i worry that they should give the clients requesting 2 ("to save 2 lives") maybe consider different aged dogs.
  3. Its good people are rescuing the shelter animals, but a real shame that they are encouraging people to take siblings http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/record-for-rspca-adoptions/2414363.aspx
  4. Oh thanks for the reply! Alot of other kelpies i have seen are really loyal to their human owners and don't care that much for other dogs, but Sally LOVES other dogs SO much (almost as much as us ) and tries really hard for approval. I am always learning about dog behaviour and find it fascinating.
  5. Thanks Sally and Tex Feeling much better now Still feeling very malicious tho' Got some great poo pics that I've been emailing to the strata managing agents and the land agent. The strata agent says to keep them coming It's ammunition for the next tribunal hearing. I send 2 versions - "The daily blog" with funny titles "The Scoop on The Poop", "Another Day, Another Dollop" and an up-date and warning that the official whinge/complaint about their lack of effort for the files (and not for them to take to heart)is coming :D How about "Full of Sh*t"
  6. Glad you feel better. Some people don't deserve to have animals (or babies!) Hopefully justice will prevail eventually.
  7. Hello! Happy New Year! Sally, now 2 years Kelpie (desexed), is still a rather submissive dog. She licks, and rolls on her back for other dogs unless they are younger. Recently, I have observed that as she approaches another female, she will mainly give the dog a WIDE berth after observing their body language (or even if they look like they don't want to play) With males though, she will walk up and roll over legs apart so they can have a good sniff. Then she will play. Dogs that she already knows (males), she will play pretty rough with. It is only the other females that she knows REALLY well (her BFF Ruby 1 y.o BC X lab bigger in size now than her) she will play rough with. Is this just coincidence or a real behavioural thing????
  8. Oh , just to be clear and to reinforce...I agree with ALL the others Best to take the pup back if they will take her, so she can get a real chance at happiness. Working Dog Rescue might help you out if that fails? Don't EVER buy from a pet shop, maybe you walked past and "impulse" buy? Don't be too hard on yourself those places work that way Vet check. Spend MORE time with your dog. Have you considered a professional walker? Maybe for an extra afternoon walk as well as your getting up earlier and giving the dog at least an hour each day. Some trustworthy family or friends might also take him (for some extra cash??) You have a few options. good luck!
  9. Did you test it on yourself to see if it was working? No reaction there would be something wrong somewhere The one we use the fur had to be shaved too, so maybe that could be it??
  10. Ummmm, i did dare but I think $100 might be a bit steep for me Any other treat suggestions out there? Keep them coming!
  11. Hey, Are Dol peoples buying their loved ones (canine ones that is) a Xmas gift? If so, what are you getting? I thought maybe a new toy and some treats. What sort of wrappable treat would be really special? Sally is not that keen on Schmackos....fusspot :D
  12. They rely on the dog wearing a collar, and a collar on this particular dog frightens me more than him escaping. He's not digging, we know that for sure. He's also not jumping, but he is possibly climbing. And a climbing dog wearing a collar is a recipe for disaster. However, I wouldn;t mind at least trying one, but I don't think they offer a try before you buy option. We have looked at a ping string for the top of the fence we think he's probably climbing (only due to the fact that he's twice been found next door and it's unlikely he'd end up there unless he went over the fence) but the bloke at the stock and feed store didn't think it would work because it relies on part of the body touching the earth. If he's climbing that fence, there's no way he can go over the fence and have a foot on the ground. We have a containment collar, but you can set the "warning' beep at a distance, so if you bury it on the boundary, it would go off at a distance before that to warn the dog, and also the "correction" can be set at a distance as well, so there is no risk of the dog being on the fence with the collar on. If you try one the training is imperitive, and make sure it is a good quality one with training mode and different options. We have one made in Australai (Sureguard), they have a shop here and are very helpful over the phone. Good Luck!@
  13. Well I wish you good luck! I think with some training and separation you might have a happy home :D Definitely get some training help. Do a google search here's a simple one http://www.caninedevelopment.com/Sibling.htm We perservered with puppy siblings for 3 months, but even with a private trainer they wouldn't listen to us, and since one was quite larger and the fights were getting serious, we had to rehome one They thrived after that, and we have kept in contact with the adoptee. Since yours are 7 years old, they might stress a bit if you separate them. And they are WAY more mature than 3-6 month old pups! I wish i had done the research before we got 2...but it turned out Ok in the end, and the guilt was unneccessary.
  14. Why do vets advise to give Phenergan when there are newer, non-drowsy alternatives??
  15. Well, I have had a little experience, but with larger dogs. First dog Zac (Lab size) nearly killed by Paralysis tick 1st time. Got anti-venom and he was fine. Another tick a few years later and he was a bit sick but no serum needed. Current dog Sally (Kelpie) gets them "crawling" on her from time to time, usually brushed off the cats (that never are bothered by ticks), so I check her every day. Only time she has had them "implanted" are when they are really tiny to see, in winter when they are babies. She will scratch like crazy and a red lump shows but no ill effects. Maybe she has built up na immunity, or they just too small to affect her.
  16. The link didn't work. Is there a retail outlet in Newcastle? I thought someone mentioned ,maybe Pet Barn is selling it with a slightly different name?
  17. Nobody on this thread is suggesting it is ok for dogs to be rude. Having an understanding of what off leash areas are like, and having successful strategies to deal with common scenarios is the important thing. If we all lived in the land of, "Life should be like this, dog parks should be like this, dogs should be like this, dog owners should be like this", etc, you are in for a life of inevitable and constant disappointment. On the other hand, if you are violent to other dogs, rude to other owners or screaming like a banshee as some have suggested, you can make both you and your dogs a target for violence.
  18. Thanks for the replies, esp to you persephone that makes sense Sal sometimes "drips" a bit of pee when she's very tired. Yes, Aussie, I took her to a vet, but at the time I was more concerned about the general itchiness,I just thought the occassional scooting was not very often and quite normal. After a look over he said it was most likely a seasonal allergy. But since then, she has been doing it a bit more but notably more at the park. I just wondered about the anal glans because it was mentioned to me (as well as the "she's got worms!" comments )at the park. I will have her looked at that spot on next visit, I was really asking I suppose, if the anal glands are in need of expelling, would you feel any raised area.
  19. Ok thought it was too good to be true. Maybe her vet is swindling her , I'll ask her again next time I see her.
  20. Dogs are naturally social creatures I suppose, but they vary in temperment, just like us. My situation (both mid-large): Previous dog: Not like to play with other dogs much, so I take him to quieter spots or lead walk NOT in off-lead parks Current dog: Extremely friendly nature, lives to play. Take to off-lead mostly but where she knows her mates and plays happily. Does not run upto "unknown" dogs, and those I know on my walk that don't like her she avoids. When her mates are on the lead for some reason (just been washed ) it's very tricky if they want to play, so I lead her up and away. Just common sense and courtesy. Our off-lead park is only unitl 10am. Maybe your park is too? Maybe you can go back on-lead time, or when it's quieter so you don't have the stress of wayward dogs. Legally I'm sure it would not be your fault unless you let your dog go forward and attack a person. Recently had a motorised bike plough through a group of dogs playing off-lead and do some terrible damage to one of them (tail stuck in rear wheel and he tried to yank it forward $2000 surgery to insides and outside), but the council and police said it was the dogs fault anyway, even tho an off-lead area and the dogs in one spot!!!
  21. Well Sally is now 2 but still rolls on her back for any dog (other than her "Mates" that are similar age or younger than her). No usual problem, but an elderly lady with 2 cattle X dogs lets one of her's "go for her" while she is down (an elderly female dog herself ) She stood by and says "Oh shes a cranky old thing" never once indicating to the dog it was doing the wrong thing. Will she grow out of it?
  22. OK, so it is likely to be this other than a grass allergy? Just thought I would have been able to feel at least the "Pea" size lump. No other people with bigger than toy dog sizes I talk to at the park (many dogs) have had this problem. To be fair to the vet, Sal had itchy issues and its not just the bum thats irritated Might call a groomer, as the toy dog peoples say they do a good job ??
