  1. Just wondering, if someone opted to have fluids and bloods done. and the bloods comes back fine, Im guessing the fluids would still be given?

Is there an option of 'give fluids if indicated necessary by bloods' ? what is the benefit of fluids in a dog with normal range bloods that is physically able to rehydrate itself post op? For short routine surgeries such as desexing etc that had no complications, what benefit is there?

Im talking about fluids more so than bloods. i think bloods are necessary but i was interested in fluids being given if bloods are fine (most post have been discussing blood results indicating the use of fluids which is why Im interested in fluid use if bloods are ok :-)

  2. I personally believe dogs need some form of excercise. pent up energy causes far more mental and physical problems in the long run from what ive heard and experienced. My 2 high energy GSP's get a run at the park in the am as well as a walk around the block and training session in the pm. I work full time shift work so sometimes i get up at 4.45 am (like thismorning) to make sure my dogs get a run (the run is on their terms though. They stop and go as they wish, i dont force them to run/make them run with me. It is off leash zoomies if that makes sense). My youngster is now 5 months old and is a much happier, relaxed and trainable dog after having her excercise requirements met (both physically and mentally)...that being said, i havent always 'excercised her'. When she was young, it was more walks to expose her to different environments rather than burning energy. :)

  3. Im loving the course. I initially tried to do it with my two dogs but have decided to focus on the youngster and then, start the big boy on it at a later date. The thing i love about the course is that you get to keep the resources for reference after its all done so i can utilise it after it all closes.

I cant believe the amout of focus im getting already. Its not really consistant at the moment but it is a HUGE improvement on what we started with. i can get a fairly decent amount of focus in many different environments now which im stoked with :)

Favourite game so far is the tug, sit, take off. My girl goes NUTS for it. Its definately improved our tug too.

Im also thinking of doing puppy peaks. I think it would be benificial to watch how susan deals with problems as they arise. Thats the biggest thing i struggle with. I only see issues once they are issues, rather than having the ability to see the starts of problems. I figure, you only live once and its not often we get the chance to see someone of her ability training behind the scenes.

have others who are on puppy peaks found it useful and interesting?

  4. My order arrived.... Yayyyy.

Im gobsmacked. my anti ball dog is going crazy for those fantastic foam balls. He rarely tugs yet is going insane tugging on the sheepskin tug. the Kong wobbler is a huge hit too. I think i just found a way to add extra to an order i was contemplating. Im stocking up on these things now i know he will interact either them. WIN!!!!

PS the sheepskin and fox tail tugs got through customs and my box was checked. Incase anyone was wondering :-)

  5. Luckily its just me and the dogs so dont have to worry about kids or anything like that. At most an extra adult may tag along :) Im starting to lean towards a dedicated gas station wagon now. I can always get a trailer later on if i find i need one. I like the idea of having them in the car with me and im sure i could manage to fit two crates and the added extras on the back seats if i organised it all well. Also the option of having 'puppy bars' added to the stationwagon later on too. Still alot of thinking and comparing to do but thanks again for the info guys. Who would have thought it would be so damn hard hehe.

At the end of the day, both options are good. Just a matter or deciding what is best for me right at this moment.

  6. Prices of the cars are probably similar i guess...give or take. Its more the cost of running the larger car that is making me a bit iffy about it. Ive had a stationwagon in the past to tow the horse float and it was so expensive in comparison to my small car. If i needed the bigger car for its towing ability i wouldnt think twice about getting one but the smaller cars can easily tow a 2 birth dog trailer too so im unsure about its use....that being said, the extra room in the stationwagon would be fabulous.

I think the trailer might be a good way to go. Can still use the runabout cheap car during the week and use the trailer when i need to take both dogs to training or shows etc.

Those with stationwagons on gas, do you find the room in the boot is significantly reduced. I do really like to travel my dogs in crates in the car for their own safety and mine.

  7. Ok so heres the situation.....

I have 2 dogs. Both of which will be trialling/competing in the future.

I currently have a small getz hatch which i have a soft crate in. The crate takes up the boot and back seat so its not practical and only fits one dog in. I Can take the crate out and put the two in the back seat but it leaves me no room for any other gear like crates etc.

I plan to take them away camping and on trips as well as to competitions/training.

So my dilema is do i trade in the getz and get something bigger like a stationwagon or keep the getz and get a small 2 birth trailer (from my research the tare weight of the small standard 2 births should be fine for my getz to tow...and if not, i would get another small car but one that can safely and legally tow the trailer)

If i got a stationwagon, its petrol/upkeep costs are huge compared to my small runabout. I could get one on gas but that would reduce the room i have in the boot for the dogs thus defeating the purpose of having the car with bigger space. I dont need the bigger car other than to simply have room for dogs etc.

I like the idea of having the trailer as it can also double as a crate/sleeping area for the dogs when im away etc but is it a practical thing for me to buy?

Id love to hear what others do and what their set up is.

  8. Dogs can and should have a perfect recall....problem is, it takes alot of training and proofing and work on the owners part and many cant be bothered and go down the 'well other dogs should be used to and ok with my strange dog rushing them anyway' mentality.

If im at the park with my dog on leash and another dog rushes him its not ok. i have no issue in the world with another dog approaching my dog as long as the owner is in control of it either on leash or off leash with a solid recal and asks my permission. I think its irresponsible to think that the dog being rushed (in an over exuberant playful way) should just get over it and deal with it. All the socialisation in the world doest mean the dog is ok with being rushed at, regardless of its age. Luckily where i live i have not enountered a dog off leash that has rushed my dogs. All dogs ive ever seen have had fantastic recalls and return to their owners the minute we are spotted. Thumbs up to these fantastic owners and well trained dogs if you ask me. I always feel safe and know my dogs can have a walk without dealing with rude dogs invading their space.

to the OP: Just another thing to think of too, in SA long lines are not considered leashes. There is legislation here that states it must be 2m or less long (if memory serves me correctly). Just something to look into. I personally think you are doing a great thing by keeping the long line on and working on your recall but just keep in mind legislation may not support you using it.

  9. My GSP is liver and white and does the same. Its sun breaching the coat in my dogs case. I feed my dogs livamol. its great for their coat but won't do anything once the coat is bleached. I can't see that it would hurt your other dog to have it.

    gorgeous dogs btw :-)
