  1. Yup, you need a behaviourist :) Both of you will be so much happier once you sort some of those problems out. I suspect you'll only need to deal with a few then the rest will fall into place.
  2. Yes, I use them for behaviour modification. They are an excellent response prevention tool, being effective and relatively neutral. Where the handler isn't strong enough to handle a dog who is not under control, they are great, and the handler can relax and pay attention to what they need to do. Some dogs will try to back out of a harness, but it's the same as dogs who will try to back out of a collar. If you get them moving in a different direction or get their attention onto something else, problem solved. I usually recommend a double-ended leash attached also to a collar.
  3. It's response prevention, stop the unwanted behaviour then teach them what you want them to do instead. If they get frustrated then I suppose it's just something they need to get used to, but I'd be looking to give them more appropriate means to achieve drive satisfaction instead.
  4. The dogue died of idiopathic larangeal paralysis as it was leaving (I heard the building not the ring). This condition can be congenital and can be caused by other things. I will try to find the link again. I suppose my point was that this was just bad luck, not really due to breeding for exaggerated features (as far as we know) and not a widespread problem within the breed. Although it's not a breed without health problems, that's for sure.
  5. There is also a report of a DDB collapsing while leaving the ring, then later being put down. I would just like to stress that the cause of the collapse appears to have nothing to do with either overheating, or any health problems prevalent within the breed (laryngeal paralysis). Just extraordinarily bad luck, very sad for the owners.
  6. Six breeds have now failed the vet check.
  7. That seemed to be the crux of the owner's argument. I can think of stronger arguments she could have made, maybe in time she will, if able.
  8. What were these people thinking, putting a dog up with these problems. I am sure they would be breeding from it as well. No wonder people see registered breeders as unethical. Imagine the pain this dog was in. I have to wonder about the judges along the way also... In the first instance you should probably wonder what is fact and what is fiction ? I guess we'll all have to wait and see. I'm not expecting much truth from either side, given the complete lack of transparency in this process.

  10. Clumber Spaniel also failed vet check due to bilateral ectropian and secondary conjunctivitis.
  11. Imagine an "invisible barrier" 60cm around the toy.
  12. Kikopup does a series on YouTube for 'Leave It'. She also does an 'Invisible Barrier' video, but I only saw the teaser (which looked really good).
  13. The survey in question gives plenty of room for additional comments.
  14. You are not alone. And judges have been overlooking some of these things for years.
  15. Trouble-maker  It's us "breeders" who will be financing your retirement! Selflessly keeping our economy running with fresh grist for the mill. I'm funding my own retirement Aidan... the taxes paid in the future by today's kiddies won't be contributing a cent. :) My kiddies will be buying the stuff the companies you own makes. It's a gold-clad plan, we just have to cough up enough productive humanimals to feed it.
  16. An important distinction - the world isn't, the economy is.
  17. Trouble-maker  It's us "breeders" who will be financing your retirement! Selflessly keeping our economy running with fresh grist for the mill. If your kids will be financing my retirement, I consider it fair return for funding your child care rebates, baby bonuses, and other bribes that successive govts fork out to get your vote. :) I hate to out-cynic you, but vote-getting is only the short-term aim of incentivising human breeding. Birth rates have dropped below replacement, which is a massive (and well acknowledged) problem for the years to come. Cheap investment, I reckon!

  19. Whilst I can't fault your logic, I can assure you that after you actually have them, all selfishness quickly disappears! True, I'm sure people with kids become less selfish after having them, but having them in the first place is always for selfish reasons. Don't get me wrong, if I could still be selfish about it, I would  They just place an awful lot of demands on my time/money/patience/entertainment options/clothes/love life/dignity/everything that I once enjoyed...

  21. The purpose of a survey such as this one is to cost-effectively gather a whole bunch of data so that you know where to focus more expensive efforts in later studies. On the off-chance that a huge number of people lied about being a paid dog trainer it probably isn't a big issue, they still identified themselves as dog trainers. So long as the method is reported honestly. Putting together a database of professionals has many of the same problems as just asking on-line, except that it costs a lot more to put together that database.
  22. I can legally use an ecollar. I can't use a snake.
  23. I trained my old GSD to ignore rustling in the bushes (toss a little stone in the bush where she couldn't see). If the snake was on the track I would recall her, which was dependent on me seeing the snake. Thankfully we don't get snakes in our yard, no easy solution there.
  24. Well said. I wouldn't want to add up the expenses I incurred fighting battles with cancer in my dogs, but they didn't suffer a minute longer than they had to.
  25. I'd walk back to the owner so they can secure their dog. Often happens in off-leash areas.
