  1. My original post asked about bitches shown when in full season ( standing ) I too have shown bitches early in their cycle but I will never show a bitch in FULL season. Unfortunately many do and I am of the opinion that this shows disregard for fellow exhibitors Some males handle it alright but many dont' and should not be subjected to the stress etc. of a bitch, ready to mate standing in front of them in the conformation ring. (sorry for it being conformation ) When did we start showing for sheep stations ? Have we all become so desperate that we cant' dare to miss a show ? People allowing their dog or bitch to urinate any where without consideration to other people and their property should be shown up for what they are....ignorant We all need to be a little less concerned about ourselves and sometimes think of others around us.
  2. It is quite easy to see why the dog world can never be united in any subject other than ones' own self interest when comments are made that show an obvious disregard for fellow exhibitors. I can only begin to imagine the uproar if I took my full in season bitch onto a ground being used for obedience etc. Apart from the obvious problems caused by both actions I would like to think that we would all show some consideration to fellow dog people. Then maybe Ive' been bought up wrong.
  3. Just a question, Should you be able to show a bitch Full in season in the conformation ring ??? You cannot trial or do obedience with an in season bitch, why should you be allowed to show ? Unfortunately people allow their bitches to urinate around the rings, sometimes inside the rings without any thought for other exhibitors ,should this be allowed to continue?
  4. Gaylek, I think your comments are spot on and they put another perpective on this topic. We all seem to be searching and digging from with in our group, and whilst we do have some causes internally your remarks address another much overlooked issue. Dont' you think that our canine bodies need to also look outside their hallowed little square and TRY something new instead of simply adding new regulations all the time for the all ready burdened members .
  5. I personally feel there are quite a few reasons people are steadily dropping off the show scene ,or thinking about doing so. In many previous posts I have made reference to ' face judging ' quite a large problem. Possibly some times not always the reason one gets dumped but none the less a large problem, which our canine bodies appear to ignore hoping that the discontent amongs't us will go away...it wont'. Another factor I feel is the terrible cheapening of awarded trophies ( tea towels, plastic cups, and many other cheap and nasty prizes. ) I dont' expect gold plated watch's or diamonds and I understand how difficult it would be to come up with new ideas show after show For many of us that have been showing for many years and are nearing the end of our showing can recall the years ago when show trophies were cherished by everyone lucky enough to receive them and to this day they still retain pride of place in my home, proudly reminding me of dare I say the good times. Dog showing has changed over the years ,like many other things and it is a shame. Added to the above observations is the costs associated now with showing, petrol being the most obivious, particularly for regional areas. When younger and playing football, surfing, and being a professional sale person awards for success were much sort after by all and a tea towel, or a towel set from go-lo or the $2.00 shop wouldnt' have done it for me.
  6. I have been showing large breeds for nearly 30 years and during that time have purchased three Toledo trailers of various sizes. All have been excellent without any problems, and I have always got great resale value from them. I personnaly would not look at anything else.
  7. As I have previously stated on earlier posts, this is not just about APT, and anyone who really thinks' that it is, you are really kidding yourselves. Ask yourselves this question, why has the state goverments elected out of hand world wide evidence from other countries that a ban on any breed is not the answer. They just bring in another law to satisfy the panic and public concern , just enforce the current laws re dog responsible ownership.I hasten to add that I do not own APTs. My serious concern is the overall dog world, and whilst everyday as I read the DOL forums I simply see the same comments and sadly from all of us no action. The governments know that we are disorganised and cannot unite about anything that does' not affect us directly..EG the banning of tail shortening. How about a National rally ??? or maybe too busy .
  8. The Governments, looking at banning various dog breeds following incidents throughout the country ALL seized upon hysterically by our media perhaps as a follow up to dangerous dog laws etc. will look at banning all Holden commodores as they May be involved in more accidents than Fords. This analagy is about as stupid as the Governments current intentions.
  9. Bjelkier, I agree with your comment re good quality dogs' and I appreciate that not all judges do the wrong or corrupt thing , but a regular glance through the various state magazines will leave you in no doubt of the payback system that amongst certain judges is rife. The sadest part about this state of affairs is that it continues unashamedly and without any actions from the various bodies to try the address the problem. In my opinion the reason is as obivious as a boyle on your nose, check out your boards of directors on the canine bodies. I personally feel that our canine bodies need to be managed by business people not dog people, and hopefully this would eliminate all the conflicts of interest. When all said and done the dog world is a business, and as such should be administered by professional business people not dog judges etc who are a product of the system that has been in serious decline under their stewardship. Given that "business people" will have profit as the bottom line, how much are you prepared to see memberships, show entries, litter registrations etc raised to fund such an organisation? As far as I'm concerned people need to either put up or shut up on face judging. Don't give facey judges your entries.. they'll get the hint soon enough. Poodlefan, your comments re put up or shut up in relation to face judging have been spoken by many people over many years and I have not heard of any judges retiring or being stood down for lack of entries.many of these judges continue to roll along judging continually spoiling the showing adventures of many a new exhibitors.

  11. For all those non-believers out there re " face judging " regularly check your journals results. I rest my case.
  12. I dont' know about the rest of you out there, but I am so sick and tired of the beat up that the various media outlets put out when we have a dog attack, but unfortunately for us it sell newspapers. I think that we are all looking at these issues from our own experienced perspectives that we have gathered over many years in the dog world and this sometimes I feel tends to isolate us from the general dog scene. If you combine all the canine councils state members it makes a minute number compared to the overall dog population in Australia. How can we hope to have an effect in the manangement of so many dogs, we cant'. All the canine bodies in my opinion are self interest groups only concerned with their own house. Whilst the majority of " professional " dog people are responsible some arent', if you simply do the sums in relation to dog ownership through out the country you realise our group is small fish in a very large pond. The way that I see it is that we all need to look outside our own groups and certainly become a lot more vocal about dog issues.... not just to each other but especially to our organisations and lobby, lobby lobby these media outlets. E-mail these tv and media companies, demand fair and unbiased comments, demand unemotional responses to these events , not simple knee-jerk reactions to pacify the anti dog libertarians, Simply enforce the current laws, dont' just invent new ones. How about a National Forum on Canine matters to be held at a set venue, with all relevent parties, no holds barred to nationally get some sense into dog ownership in this country. Full representation from all sides of the problem, no grandstanders, honest open problem solving, IDEAS??
  13. As mentioned in my original post I posed the question re licensing for dog ownership to try to address some of the many problems we are all facing with dog ownership if nothing changes. I suggested that we perhaps need a body solely focused on this matter .Not nescessarily councils, frankly I think it would be better to keep councils out of it anyway. They are already involved in too many things that they cant' cope with as it is. Legal issues would have to be addressed and assuming these are done correctly and fairly would this be a solution perhaps. It would be good , now dont' break out laughing if the Pet industry who make Billions of dollars out of us all maybe helped to fund a scheme like this.
  14. I think that is is very pleasing to see such a vibrant discussion re the subject of "dog licensing " Every proposal has problems that need to be overcome and one of the most important is the policing of the current laws regarding the keeping and care of our dogs. However as we all know not every person that obtains a dog or any other pet for that matter really has a great lot of concern for any regulations that are placed upon us in relation to keeping of dogs and I feel that the fact that they are so easily obtainable with hardly no effort is in my opionion detrimental to the dog. Policing MUST be strong and enforced, maybe it needs to be taken out of local council hands and put under the control of a totally separate body ? ( not canine councils ) We have to address the continuing breeding by uninformed people such as Mr smith down the road who does' not know when his bitch is even in season, let alone her cycle etc. EDUCATION is a way to help . It is not only children that need to be taught adults need it too. Nobody wants' any of our personal rights taken away from us ,but maybe some adjustments wont' hurt anyone, and might just make a difference.
  15. The point of the exercise was to demonstrate that breed alone does not make a dog dangerous any more than it makes a dog "safe". Efforts to prevent dangerous dogs in the community cannot afford to focus on breeds. You said such stories wouldn't exist Matthew... and I've proven otherwise. The fact that you're once again making personal comments tells me that you've seen your argument that Labradors aren't responsible for attacks on people blown clean out of the water with a few minutes of Googling. The analogy was being used (since you seem incapable of grasping the point of it) to demonstrate that ascribing attacks to breed and using breed bans alone deal with the issue is an utter nonsense. Pitbulls are large powerful dogs - but so are Labradors. Matthew the fact that you believe to your core that pitbulls are inherently dangerous dogs simply doesn't make it so. You can raise the level of your argument and take potshots at me but it doesn't change the fact that your belief is not borne out with facts. You argued that since the dog that killed this poor little girl was a pitbull, they should all die. But it wasn't a pitbull. You argued that other breeds of dog don't do what pitbulls can do. I've proved they can and do. The difference between you and I Matthew is that I know for a fact that a whole range of contributing factors make a dangerous dog so that only dealing with one of them (breed) doesn't make society safer. You believe in the myth that killer dogs are born, not made. I challenged you yesterday to find any evidence that breed specific legislation has made any community a safer place. Find it and you'll prove your point. I've looked and I can't find it. I can find evidence to the contrary though. Have you actually looked at the Calgary project yet? Poodlefan, I agree with your comments. Unfortunately you will never convince the usual lot of uninformed remarks about any breed following such a sad incident. Regarding BSL in various countries in an attempt to stop dog attacks, it simply does' not work .The breeds are not the problem. In Holland in 1993 Pitbulls were banned and many were seized and destroyed, even if they only looked similar to a Pitbull. In 2008 the Dutch government reversed the ban on several banned breeds,WHY ? because after all those years they determined the ban had made no difference to the incidence of dog attacks. I rest my case.
  16. I am putting this out there for your comments. Please think this subject through before you comment. In light of all the discussion not just recently but ever increasingly over the past few years regarding everything from puppy farming, dog control, dog health problems, banned breeds ,and probably another thousand arguements regarding canines is it about time the state governments implemented compulsory dog licensing?. Now before you all get up in arms, let me just suggest my ideas. 1. 14 day cooling off period prior to puppy puchase. Object. to stop impulse buying of puppies from pet shops/ markets etc. 2. mandatory council ranger inspection of proposed home of future puppy e.g. containment issues/ safety for both dog and owner. prior to license issue. 3.A very nominal licence fee which by law must go back into the dog world e.g. education, health, research, rescue etc. 4. Compulsory State register of all dogs in that state ( not easy but could be done ) 5. A compulsory requirement to de-sex all dogs not being used for breeding by registered breeders. 6. limiting the number of litters by those breeders on a annual basis. Whilst some of you may think these comments are way off, just look past the comments and focus on the intent of the ideas'. To help to protect us all from all the anti dog lobby who rightly or wrongly see dogs generally as an unwanted and an annoyance to their lives.

  18. Hi Ashley, I currently have a large 6 berth Toledo which is 6years old and have had absolutely no problems with it.This is the third Toledo I have owned and have had no problems with any of them. I have upgraded them through need as our dogs numbers increased. They tow easily and are very stable and roomy for the dogs, also they have a great resale value if you look after them. go for it !

    Rottweiler

I have owned Rottweilers for nearly 30years, and have never fed any of my Dogs' 3 or 4 cups of any dry food. the maximum dry food I feed my dogs' is ONE cup. (an enamel camping cup ) I have always soaked my dry food as a preventative against bloat. I have used for most of those years Greens dog food and then when they changed Supercoat ,Adult Large Breed.( for adult dogs ) Together with the dry food and mixed through I feed either human grade chicken mince and lean beef occaisionally.I feed Lamb brisket bones as a treat every second day. We had fourteen Rottweilers at on stage and had lifespans from 8-9 years up to 14.5. currently one 13yr. male 2 8yr. males .1 11yr. bitch and 1 8 yr. bitch. I think that all the so-called premium brands are great marketing and a good money spinner for the Vets and pet supply business. Oh. and i still show my 8 years olds as they enjoy the day out. do the exercise and soak 3/4 cups of dry food and see what happens in your dogs stomach.
  20. Daer Gaylek, I am sorry for your loss, and I know the feelings that you are feeling, many people who are not dog/ ani mal lovers cannot understand the tremendous bond we have with our beloved dogs. They arent' dogs they are family. I unfortunately have gone through this many times and like yourself I find that it does' not lessen the pain. Just remember the good times that you had together.
  21. Would somebody please tell me the name of the book that has two different breed standards for both the GSD and the Rottweiler. As far as I know there is one standard. In my opinion both of these breeds have been ruined by the so- called speciality clubs. Both breeds speciality shows have become over the years circuses, with the cat calling, baiting etc. All this has been done to appease the Germans and to make sure they will still come and judge these breeds. I have had both breeds and have seem the demise of the once majestic GSDs which were strong, well boned and correct tempraments AND strong toplines. The Rottweilers have also been ruined in the same manner with loss of their true tempraments , boning etc. If members of DOL are honest they would agree with these observations. I hasten to add that with both breeds there are some exceptions, but not too many. The lack of attendance at all breed shows by these breeds further indicates how little their members think of the overall dog scene. And of course the usual protests re judging quality will arise, but let me say I have seen and heard the same remarks re speciality judging as I hear every week at all breed shows. because they are speciality judges does not make them better judges.
  22. Haven't you learned your lesson on bagging AB's shows yet? Not quite sure what you gain from being so rude all the time. Megz, I cant' understand how you have taken my comments' to be "bagging " all breed shows, to the contary I was bagging specialist shows and trying to point out that many people who swear by the specialst shows, quite often use the all breed shows to title their dogs'because they find it difficult, if not impossible to title at specialist shows. The statements made re the standard was to point out that to my knowledge every breed only has one standard, not an all breed one and a specialist one. Over 30years I have seen the breed to which I referred become distant from mainstream shows, sadly at the expense of the breed, going down their own trail and bagging all breed shows. When was the last time you saw a large Rottweiler entry at an all breed show.?
  23. As far as the question re distance for cc when speciality shows are on I think it varies from state to state. I find it very strange that we appear to have two distinct breed types and only a single standard for a breed.Rottweilers' are a classic example , we have a speciality dog , and an all breeds dog. very strange. I thought that all breeds only had one standard. However it is quite common for these speciality dogs to obtain their titles at obviously inferior shows ( all breeds ) to gain the title of Champion. I guess this would apply to many other breeds as well.
  24. If you think we have problems with cronyism now, we'll have even more problems under a system like that. If we want independent judges, we have to treat them like grownups. One thing I would like to see is some kind of continuing education requirement to maintain one's license, similar to what many professionals have to do. Continuing training will not stop cronyism in our sport or any others, but at least lets' see the canine bodies acknowledge there is a problem with some of their judges' and attempt to do something about it. As far as I am concerned I would just like to see some effort to allay some of the discontent amongst exhibitors who witness it every week-end. Sadly, I dont' think we will. Many professions have mechanisms in place to keep the pros' on their toes', why not ours?
  25. I agree completely with your comments, the quality of dogs' being put up is only a reflection of the standard of the judging on the day. I do believe however that the judges' need to be answerable to someone rather than just the exhibitors. I believe that in the US judges are somewhat critiqued on their judging decisions. This is as I am aware done by a body contracted by the AKC to do this .I know of an australian judge that was asked to explain their reasons for putting up a particular exhibit.
