  1. Even if it were legal in Oz, I wouldn't have mine docked. I like having a waggy tailed dog. I hope Oskar and Zsa Zsa never break their tails so they can have nice long coffee table clearers all her life!!!
  2. Oskar has been in the bed since day 1. He is also a doonah creeper. He is OK to go to sleep on top of the bed, but, about 4.30-5.00am, he walks over the top of me to the edge of the bed, nudges me to wake up, so I can lift the doonah for him to crawl under and snuggle up against my warm legs!! When Zsa Zsa comes home, I may have to go to a king size bed too!!!! :D
  3. I am not going to enter into the standards agrument, as I don't know enough about the standard for the breed. However, I will defend the breeder's right to charge whatever the market rate is for the pups. If they advertise them for $2200 each and they sell, then they are WORTH $2200, as things are only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for them. If this breeder had priced themselves out of the market place, they won't get a call. But, if $2200 is the going rate, they will sell like hotcakes!!!
  4. Interestingly enough, I have had mixed reactions with Staffy's. Both good and bad. Oskar loves them for some reason??? He will even seek them out when there are other dogs he can play with. He isn't scared of them and if they get too rough, he let's them know and most of them back off. However, there have been incidents where the dog has not backed off! Then, when the intensity increased, Oskar submitted and the Staffy kept going. On one occasion, the owner was standing a few feet away and I asked if he was going to do anything? He said that his dog was not hurting mine. But, it was on it's way for sure. So I told the guy (I am a hot head) that i would break his and his dog's legs if his dog marked Oskar in any way. He chose the right path and grabbed his dog and departed thankfully. I really wouldn't hurt the dog because of the owner's ignorance, but I would have broken one or both of the owner's legs!!!! :) Happily! So, much like some others, there are breeds I may pay more attention to if they are around. As in just keeping things from escalating. But I don't stop Oskar from playing with them. I just watch carefully.......... Having said that, the fights I have seen they more often than not will involve Staffy's, Labs, German Shepherds, Heelers and Pit bulls or derivitives of.......... So, I guess, while I am wary of some, I won't avoid them, unless either I know them and know they are aggressive or they charge. However normally, I allow the dogs to try and work it out first. Oskar handles himself really well in situations like this and is getting better and better at it as he gets older. He will just stand his ground with his tail wagging and his playfull bounce/bark continuing. Often it's funny watching the reaction of the other dog. They sometimes can't work out why he isn't scared of them and soon enough, as he isn't intimidated, they tend to play OK.
  5. I agree, we have one nearby and the owners are 99% great. They watch their dogs, they clean up after there dogs and if someone misses their dog doing one, it will be politely pointed out. There is the odd one missed, but it's rare. However, with all the rain it's currently a mud pit, so it is off limits for a little while. But once again, great dog owners who look out for their dogs, keep control of them and ensure there are minimal arguments. Oskar just loves it. He has a core group of his favourite playmates, which range from a Staffy to a Greyhound, a Border Collie and a GSP. :D I guess we got lucky too!
  6. I am happy to say, it all settled down overnight and the next morning and little Oskar is back to full fighting fitness!!! Although, he did throw up twice during that night! But, he is 100% back to normal now!!! thanks again for the information and taking the worry away that evening!!!
  7. Thanks so much for the reply and pic, I am relieved it is nothing too serious. As for antihistamines, I only have human ones. Periactin 5mg tablets. Are these OK on a puppy in the appropriate dose? He is happily snoring on the couch next to me so it hasn't effected him greatly, no scratching anyways as yet!
  8. Yes, yes it does!!! Except there is also one long line! Please tell me it's something silly like water retention or something?????
  9. Hi to all you dog lovers. I have a 6 month old Male Hungarian Vizsla called Oskar. Today he went to puppy school with his mum and then for a play in the Knoxfield dog park, or should I currently call it Knoxfield Quagmire!! With all the recent rain, it has reached saturated and has now turned into the most fun a dog can have, rolling in the mud :D His mum came home after and popped him into a warm bath. She used a little "Pears Transparent" soap to do so. We have never used soap on him previously, as all he normally needs is a hot wet towel bath. But he was caked in mud and needed a soak, so his mum used a little soap. Now I am not sure if this has anything to do with what I am about to describe, but I thought it was to give a thorough description of the days activities, to ensure that if anyone offers information, it is with as much fact to asses it as possible. Tonight, I have noticed little lumps on his side, top of his nose and one long line of raised fur along his side. I have checked his belly and there is no evidence of lumps or welts there and I cannot see any redness under the lumps when I look at his skin. His energy and general appearance is normal, his breathing is normal and he has eaten two meals and had some treats all with no ill effects. I will naturally monitor him closely tonight to make sure there is no change, but does anyone have any idea of what it might be? Grass mites? Plant allergy? Any other suggestions would be welcomed. Once again, any deterioration and I will take him straight up to the vet, but at this point his behaviour is normal and all his vitals are normal, so whatever it is, doesn't appear to be effecting much other than his skin.
  10. We were not confident with the diagnosis, so kept a close eye on it, watched for any changes or limping, but he settled within a few days and the swelling slowly reduced over about 6-8 days. If it had bothered him at all, I would have sought another opinion, but he wasn't all that worried about it after a day or so. He would occasionally limp on it if he jumped the wrong way down off something. If you are concerned then either go back and demand what you want politely, or seek a 2nd opinion. Either way, I hope everything heals soon.
  11. We unfortunately had to deal with this situation when Oskar our Hungarian Vizsla first arrived home. It would only have been when he was 10 or 11 weeks old and my wife's mum, ran over his little paw with a shopping trolley full of groceries. It also swelled up badly and he was very lame on it for a few weeks. We of course took him straight to the Vet and recieved exactly the same advice. We can X-ray it, but, at the end of the day the treatment will be the same and that is allow it to heal. I wasn't comfortable with that determination either, but, when I thought about it, it's what I would do with a broken toe if it were mine. Anyway, Oskar has healed up perfectly, no swelling anymore and he runs and jumps heavily on it without any limping or tenderness later.
  12. We are yet to see what little helpful things young Oskar will do. He's only 9 weeks old, so I guess we will have to allow him sometime! However, a friend of ours has a Vizsla and he actually puts the washing in the washing machine for her. I have a video on my phone somwhere of it, I will try and find it and load it somewhere to look at. She asks him to "Do the Washing" and he goes to the dirty laundry basket in her room, then item by item, takes it to the laundry and pops each item into the top loader washing machine. Sometimes if he doesn't position it quite in the right spot, he will have to use a paw to push the offending item in. Very cute.
  13. I have been experiencing it from two neighbours dogs for over 6 months now. One from the back fence and one from the side fence. I have spoken to both neighbours again recently with one taking immediate action and the other appearing not to respond as yet. I naturally prefaced my conversation with the words "I love puppies too and do not wish to cause any ill feelings, however, the barking is starting to wear thin and I would love to assist them with a solution, whatever it may be" This has delivered positive responses from both, but only action from one. However the neighbour who has taken action, in my opinion is barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. He has taken to locking the dog inside ALL the time, apart from toilet visits. I am not comfortable with this, as I believe this is not beneficial to the dog and is not addressing the barking behaviour. I have read a lot of the suggestions in this thread and will be discussing some of them when he eventually has the time to come over for a chat. (We get on well so far, so I am hoping this won't effect our relationship) The neighbour at the rear however, appears not to have taken any action. Does anyone have any suggestions which may work apart from what has been posted previously in this thread, as I am frankly at my wits end. The dog, will bark non-stop while ever I am in my back yard. It doesn't seem to matter wether or not I am making any noise, just my presence sets her off. Also, now she has started barking at night. She barked last night from 11pm till 1.15am non-stop. I am sitting here at work, knackered from lack of sleep. (I start early in the morning, so this really eats into my sleep time.) I do not want to cause any physical or phycological damage to the dog as I know it's not her fault. But I am really starting to unravel over this............ So any thoughts would be appreciated. Please note....I do not want to take this to council, if I can avoid it, as I know that is a slippery slope for the dog should the barking not be addressed by the owner.
  14. I agree with most comments so far. I didn't watch in the hope that the whole program would be chocked full of great tips, i just hoped to pick up a couple of things......bit dissapointed really, but it is retail TV after all. What did you think about the vicks vapour rub?
