  1. You could consider a pet sitter to stay at your house or have your dog stay at theirs. There are usually a lot of students up for this kind of job (obviously you would pick someone with dog experience). Just something to consider if you haven't already.
  2. Yes, they all have teeth. Speaking of teeth, Souff had the opportunity to inspect the teeth of a deceased young male tiger quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) recently. The two central incisors were extremely long and sharp - good thing there aren't too many humans near quolls because those teeth would easily go straight through a person's hand. Souff Oh well we'd better destroy them just in case  They are already endangered and the one I saw was road kill. Many of our breeds of dog have less numbers than some of our endangered native species. Sadly our politicians and the anti-dog brigade don't see the similarity. Yes, I know they're endangered but, you know, just to be safe we'd better draft a breed standard and employ a few knowledgable people to go and find the ones that remain...

  4. When will the ANKC breed clubs get their heads out of the sand and start protecting all dogs regardless of their preferred breed?????? The reporter does make it sound much worse though - Mr Fry did not say "I hate even talking about pit bulls and Staffies in the same sentence", he just pointed out the differences between Staffies and pit bulls. Yes, Mr Fry is clearly biased towards Staffies, but not so much as the reporter makes it out. ETA: the club will have enough trouble defending SBTs without worrying about pit bulls as well unfortunately
  5. Edit: Sorry Erny is right that was not a good thing to ask in a public forum Post deleted.
  6. Ok I'm a bit confused sorry, is this letter actually a response to the Vic laws or just an overall stance on BSL? If it is a response to the Vic laws, then why are there two different letters and are either of them actually addressed to anyone in particular or just for the public to use? Sorry I'm not sure if I am missing something obvious. I don't know anything about the letter In the OP here and as to why It's different. A few people contacted Hank In regards to what Is happening In Victoria and what I've linked that was his written response with consent from Hank himself that It can be used and shared providing It stays Intact and nothing changed Ok thanks

  8. I think it would be much more likely that you would be allowed to appeal through VCAT while keeping the dog as a pit bull cross under restricted conditions (so that you could hopefully keep them under normal, non restricted conditions in the future). Otherwise couldn't the dog be siezed and destroyed at any time?
  9. Maybe this could be posted in General so more people see it? I don't think many people look in this section. Just a thought because this seems quite significant and probably shouldn't go unnoticed.
  10. I don't know but when your vet gets back to you can you let us know what she recommends, I'd like to try it for my girl if there is something natural to use. Good luck with your dog
  11. I agree, the other day when I was walking my staffy in an on lead area, a man with an offlead dog came up to me and asked why I had her on the lead! I just replied "umm, I don't want to get a fine" and he said I could always just run away if a council worker said anything to me! People alway have their dogs offlead there and I do get a few looks from people like "your dog must be agressive because it is on a lead".
  12. It does say amstaff x are restricted, maybe Linda k is referring to that?
  13. Linda k, do you have a link to the q&a page, i would like to read it but cant find it.
  14. Melzawelza, do you mean if a dog 'fails' the pitbull test, or dogs that are obviously SBT but not papered? For example my staffy is only 13kg, so as far as I understand that would stop her from being classified as a pitbull (I think they hav to be over 20kg) but are you saying that if she wasnt papered she would still be restricted as a SBT? Just to clarify I don't mean under the current law in Victoria, I mean for the future.
  15. Why did it take 3 people to do what a 13 year old school kid could have done?
  16. Thanks readysetgo, that's reassuring and very sad at the same time.
  17. Yesterday I was walking my staffy and a man came up to me and said he was warning all staffy owners to have their dogs on their best behaviour because there is a big push at the moment to have staffordshire bull terriers and American staffordshire terriers become restricted breeds. He said is is the worst in Victoria at the moment (which I know, and I live in NSW but am still worrying it will spread), but they are not banning SBTs or Amstaffs yet... So I am just wondering if anyone knows the likelihood of these breeds becoming restricted in the near future, regardless of whether they have papers. Is it really possible to ban the most common dog breed? Sorry for grammar, this is written from my phone. Arielle
  18. I use it after antibiotics, worming, illness etc. To figure out the size I sort of just estimate the average human weight in comparison to the weight of the dog, since people are supposed to have 1 a day. With that said, I don't think you can really overdo it (correct me if I'm wrong though) One capsule lasts my 800g Chi puppy about 2 weeks lol (could probably stretch it out even more), but with my Staffy I just give her a whole one. Edit - sorry I didn't read your post properly, you were asking how long to give it
  19. I would think it's a poodle x cocker spaniel or schnauzer, but they ususlly don't have markings like that - all of the ones I've seen (and I've seen a lot!) have been solid colours.

  21. Lilli, I am aware of the document I believe you are referring to, so do not assume I dont know what I'm talking about. Pound statistics showing reasons for euthanasia do not make puppy farming ethical. You are only considering one aspect of the problem. I have worked in a pet shop (regrettably) and I have seen puppy farmers come in day after day with puppies from the same bitch in very close together litters. The puppy farmers were never concerned with the welfare of their dogs, and I will never forget when one of them came in and said "my main bichon is too sick so unfortunately I've had to breed with the poodle". The puppies were often sick - some contracted parvo and some died. I was sick to death of people coming in day after day, people who were not considering a puppy but ended up walking out with one. People who had never had dogs before, but thought the Kelpie cross Koolies, or the rottie cross GSDs would be a good choice for their first dog. Working in the pet shop we were not allowed to turn people away. Regardless of whether or not the dogs ended up in shelters, I feel I can safely say that 8 out of 10 homes that pups ended up in were unsuitable.
  22. When you say there is not an undersupply of homes are you taking into account that not everyone wants to own a dog? Are you claiming that it is necessary to have puppy farms and breeders who are not concerned with health or temperament of their dogs, just because statistically there are enough people to provide homes? You cannot seriously use statistics alone to address the issue of puppy farming.
  23. Ahh, well i guess that does make it difficult. The vets are able to extract urine with a syringe that goes into the bladder. I have had this done to my dog and I know it sounds a bit invasive, but she was fine. If you are not ok with that, then I guess you'll just have to try and creep up on him with a cup.
