Sorry to say , I disagree . The content of the speeches did not flow and doubt they would convince someone with no knowledge on the matter . One speaker felt the need to publicly address some of the protesters on how to fight BSL , arguing that they are part of the problem with the public perception of bull breeds . Though the speakers were interesting I was also hoping to hear from some professional bodies on the coroners recommendations from the Ayen Chol inquest .It was still good to be there to support those going to the Supreme Court as well as those dealing with VCAT and council .

Half the numbers on last year and not the same depth of speakers . Unfortunately preaching to the converted.

Coroner Calls For Laws On Breeding Restricted Breeds
huck house replied to Alyosha's topic in In The News
Even if many anti BSL are 'rednecks' ..What about considering the opinions of the RSPCA, AVA , and many other experts on the matter? Why should the public be manipulated into believing they are 'safe' when their government created legislation it hat is not based on reason and facts ? -

Canine Research Council US: http://nationalcanin...c-publications/ This website sums up the subject well . It is absurd and painful to watch the Magistrate at VCAT having to intelligently consider measurements from photos of a dog against amateur breed standard illustrations . -
Coroner Calls For Laws On Breeding Restricted Breeds

BSL may have been on some people's radar for a decade but most potential new dog owners wouldn't have a clue about BSL . Many bull breed owners still don't . ' Educating ' the public on the illegalities of owning a 'weapon' would only add to hysteria and advertises to the wrong 'type'. So the ANKC isn't for the annointed , just the discerning ?! -
Coroner Calls For Laws On Breeding Restricted Breeds

The dog probably did experience 'extreme' handling . It is not likely the dog was treated in a way most would expect an urban pet dog to be . This is the bigger issue than breed . Note : the owners of the dog had previously owned German Shepard's - when they were deemed the toughest dogs on the block . -

Bad laws of any sort should be challenged. BSL enacted without consulting experts is how I have convinced people who don't even like dogs to sign petitions against it . People do not want governments making bad laws based on exploiting the public's fear. -
' Don't come complaining to the rest of us when that does happen If you're going to be supportive of breaking the law, you can't be surprised when governments bring in tougher laws to fix the problem of lack of compliance. ' These people are preserving your right to own and manage the breed of your choice . Bad laws need contesting not compliance .I think Ballarat council will regret being so ruthless acting on their powers and won't pursue Butch or other innocent dogs so readily next time .

How exactly does breed profiling do that.?

Another small group are still planning on meeting at parliament house informally. I yThink sydneysiders are still going ahead ...

The facebook page has disappeared. It all seemed well meaning but unfortunately unprofessional and unorganized .This Sunday may be too soon after the Ayen Chol court case, but I hope Community k9 And others collaborate soon ,highlighting that dangerous dog law reform is welcomed , BSL is not .
-
Are the APBT club going to be there?? I hope there will be great speakers as there was last October. Are many from this forum planning to attend the rally this Sunday?

M-sass , do you even like dogs? Thankfully there are many experts and organizations who will continue informing government , magistrates and the public that the Victorian laws are ineffective , unjust and dangerous .
-
I think another reason people surrender and opt to euthanase so readily is because their dog is declared dangerous . So as well as a hefty fine , they must then comply with stringent laws on housing , signage and how their dog has to live... Last month, a young couple allowed Darebin council to euth their two 5 year old husky's after the dogs killed a cat. ( the gym that backs onto their house was renovating and were careless with the temporary fencing.. Hence the dogs got out) . The council told them of their options , but they were overwhelmed by the gravity of how things were put to them . ..the consequences if there was any other incident with their dogs under the new Victorian dangerous dog laws.

Whippet In Qbyn Pound
huck house replied to keetamouse's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
It seems as though there is consensus among the whippet experts that the dog is a whippet cross. As soon as it was established that she is not 'pure' , whippet rescue bailed on her. -
Whippet In Qbyn Pound
huck house replied to keetamouse's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I would have thought that rescuing a whippet X would be the definition of 'cleaning up after the breed' . Regardless of the percentages in the makeup of her genetics, this is a whippet cross. It is now up to 'rescue' to rehome the garbage. -
Bslsux - thanks for posting . Agree - it's wrong wrong wrong. I will write letters of disapproval to relevant parties tomorrow. Whether that helps or not ..what more can one do ? When is the next anti-bsl protest march?? Poor Ace .
-
Snook , the Banyule weekly wrote that Ace was picked up after Christmas wandering around unregistered . Bslsux , ( for sure it does ) I am finding the thread hard to follow but will keep checking in for more information and understanding of the case. Thanks for posting.

Seems PTS is a default position for some . Pretty harsh advice considering it's based on an Internet forum diagnosis. Eric is a large young rescue dog who has only been in his new home for a month with new owners working full time . What do people expect ? He likes people , Pickles , other dogs and has been amenable to training. To Kirsty79. , I'm sure you wouldn't take the advice to have Eric PTS yourself. I hope you are not too stressed out. It's a hard position to be in and whatever you decide you have to do will be the right thing.

How Old Have Your Last Dogs Lived?
huck house replied to Blackdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Bully cattle X - Sally over 15 . Still missed . If it wasn't for a plate in her leg that cancer grew around she would still be here . Fittest old girl our vet had ever met. All my grandfathers dogs and lots of neighbors dogs used to live till they were 18 . Why are digs dying younger?? I'm already nervous that our bully's may have only two thirds of the life expectancy that Sally had. -
Our rescue dogs were out of control when we got them a bit over a year ago. If I could post pictures you would see the destruction of a king size bed, leather lounge, chairs, feather down cushions , power cords etc etc... They were both stressed out and had obviously never been indoor dogs before. We learnt the hard way, giving them too much too soon . It took around six months for them to become secure and not worry that they will be bumped again. In the last six months ,they have developed impeccable manners around the house . It is as though they are calm enough to appreciate what they have . They still love to runamok and wreck things , but they know what is theirs ( I provide a lot of the things that have been suggested , show them what I got them , put toys in the crate , near food bowls, in the yard ) I suppose what I'm trying to say is that our household looked like a lost cause a year ago and people thought we were mad to persist. 2nd hand dogs (ours are 3rd and 4th) are a challenge but when they blossom the reward is priceless. Eric sounds like a dead set sweety ,he may end up being the best thing that ever happened to you guys and Pickles. I'm not dismissing all the expert advice on here but things can workout for the best too. :)

Pav Lova , why are you less sympathetic to this couple?( I am respectful of your opinions) Have you been privy to extra informationon this particular case? I realize they have had their dog for six years, but Ican totally understand people's reluctance to abide by the law due to the expense and restrictions onthe dogs freedom. For sure their decision has backfired, but it would be so easy to paint yourself into a corner with the BSL laws.
