  1. Will give her a bath with the aloveen shampoo i have over the weekend. It hasn't been too hot lately so i'm not sure about heat rash but i do have a habit up covering her in blankets at bed time. Maybe i should leave them off.
  2. hmmm don't know why i hadn't thought of that! haha. I do have a play pen but the panels are joined by pegs that you put into sand or grass but i guess i could get some cable ties or something the join them, as the hutch is under the patio on bricks. Fingers crossed the play pen is large enough to go around the hutch!
  3. I don't think it's the rabbit she is trying to reach. She absolutely loves chewing on anything and everything, and the problem only started when i got this new hutch. The old hutch she didn't care less about :S I know she is bored outside during work hours as i've had many many other destroyed items, but that's the price i pay. I leave kongs and an assortment of puzzle toys outside but they are of no interest to her. She took a liking to ripping the fly screen off the hutch so i solved that by nailing it from the inside. Now that she can't reach that, it seems like the wood is the next best bet and i can't reprimand her as she only goes near it when i'm not home. Unfortunately fencing the area off isn't possible but surely the wood will taste a lot worse if i varnish it..
  4. My pointer has taken a liking to chewing the corners off my wooden (made out of fir-wood, which i believe is a very low quality wood anyway) rabbit hutch when I'm not home. Short of constructing an entirely new hutch, i would like to make this one last as long as possible and minimise the damage. In which case I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with certain types of varnish or paint, stopping a dog from chewing?? I know i can try things like vinegar or hot sauce but i don't really want to be slopping this all over the hutch...
  5. Buckley is 10 months old, so well past the teething stage i would think. He is a very rough player and very adventurous so that's why i'm not too worried at this stage. He was home alone most of tuesday so who knows what he got up to. The lump is still there 24 hours later, so i'll give it another day or so before i head to the vet.
  6. Woke up this morning to find this lump on Buckleys lip... I'm wondering if it caused by some sort of insect bite or a knock to the lip..It doesn't look like it's gone down in size since this morning. It feels very hard on top, and doesn't seem to be coming from his gums. It's not bothering him or causing any pain and he is drinking and eating as per normal. How long should i be waiting before i call the vet? I've taken a dog in for face swelling before and the vet told me to wait and see if it went down so i don't want to go to the vet if i don't need to. A friend told me i should give him a claratyne tablet, but i'm a little wary of that.
  7. If stalking is in the name of welfare is it classed as stalking or personal investigation Personal investigation is a good way of putting it In all seriousness though, i hope this man gets the wake up call he needs. Poor dogs
  8. My 10 month old pointer has developed an odd pimply looking rash on her. It is primarily on the underside of her chest and to a lesser degree on both of her underarms. It's been present for the last couple of days and doesn't seem to be getting any worse. I have some neocort in the cupboard so i have been putting that on her morning and night to see if it will clear up. Has only been a few days so probably a bit early to tell yet, but i'm just wondering if anyone has had something similar? She is not at all itchy or bothered by it and i can't imagine it could be any kind of allergy as her routine and diet havn't changed. She has been on antibiotics for the past 3 weeks following surgery to remove a stomach abscess but i can't find any information to say this is a known side effect.. Here is a close up picture of the area on her chest.
  9. You do not need to use Frontline as well as Sentinal Spectrum. If you want to use Frontline get Sentinal Inteceptor which does not include flea treatment. However personally I would go with Sential Spectrum. I have been using Sentinal Spectrum now for many years and we never have fleas! Remember though Sentinal Spectrum does not kill adult fleas, it stops the lifecycle. So if your dogs are with other dogs and a flea jumps on them it will not kill this. I always keep capstar on hand, which kills adult fleas (in about 1 hour I think) just in case we have any tag alongs. I very rarely have to use this though. The makers of Sential make capstar and you can also get a version made by exelpet from the supermarket. Every year Sential bring out a summer pack with free capstar - so look out for this!! Also - if you are going to go with Sentinal Inteceptor and so a seperate flea treatment I would recommend Comfortis over Frontline. Ok great, think i've got my head around it all now. Do i need to worry about treating ticks or just remove as i see them? I don't think i live in a high tick area (suburbia perth).
  10. Could always secretly follow them home from the dog park. I guess this could be considered stalking though...haha
  11. Abbie is an all over body licker! Very irritating at times! She waits at the bath mat for me when I'm in the shower and will quickly get up and prepare to lick my legs all over as soon as i get out. In addition to this, she loves feet and faces especially.
  12. Ok great, I'll get the large dose chews and just give them one each. Are fleas fairly easy to spot? I've never actually had fleas on any of my dogs before so I'm worried i wouldn't know what to look for! In which case it's fine to use sentinel spectrum on it's own and then if i ever spot fleas, i can use a one off type thing like frontline..? Sorry if i sound daft. haha
  13. In that case i'de probably rather give a whole chew each seeing as it is covering my dogs from some of the some serious stuff like heartworm. As they are both just above the borderline for the medium chews, would it still be ok to give the smaller dose seeing as we are only talking the difference of a few kg's? Or better to be safe then sorry and give them the maximum cover?
  14. Don't know if this has been brought up before but i couldn't find much info on it. I usually use advocate but have decided to switch over to sentinel spectrum this month as the chews are much more convenient than on the spot treatment. I get the impression that sentinel spectrum is an all in one but is there anything it doesn't cover that i should be concerned about? I'm also questioning what pack to get. Medium dogs is 11-22kg and Large 22-45kg. The thing is one of my dogs is 22kg and the other is 25kg mark. In which case could i then just buy the large chews and split them in half seeing as they cover up to 45kg? Or would it be ok to give them a medium chew each?
  15. A very odd news story to wake up to this morning! Absolutely awful.
  16. The thing is i've often spied on them through the glass when they don't hear me come home from work and a lot of the time they are calmly walking around or laying down next to each other. It's almost like Buckley puts a big show on when people are around to see it. The food isn't too much of an issue as i am always there to watch them eating. I tell Buckley to sit and wait until Abbie finishes and then he's allowed to lick her empty bowl. It's when i don't say anything that he thinks he can stick his nose into her bowl. I'de like to try some training with them myself before i get a professional in. So basically every time he initiates rough play i need to intervene before or during? The only thing he responds really well to is food but if he knows i have treats in my hand he would rather stick by my side rather than play with Abbie..And if he doesn't know i have treats, me calling him over isn't going to work when he's mid play fight..?
  17. He is very easily distracted with food but at the same time if i treat him, Abbie expects a treat as well and it can be hard to train with two bouncy over active puppies! Usually I'm not too worried about the way they interact but Abbie had quite a serious operation two weeks ago and her stitches are still in so i've had a hard job keeping both dogs quiet. It just seems like all they ever do is sleep or play fight and lately it's more fighting than anything else. Would a time out work just as effectively as reward based training? Last night Buckley was jumping all over Abbie so i grabbed him by the collar and locked him in the laundry for 2 minutes. Waited for him to stop barking and then let back out. It seemed to calm him for a little bit..
  18. I've been having a bit of trouble lately with my two. Buckley is 8 months, Abbie 9 months. They are quite opposite in nature to each other. Abbie is quiet and reserved where as Buckley is rough and go go go 24/7. Buckley has never showed any aggressive tenancies towards Abbie or any other dog for that matter. Abbie often snaps if he disturbs her during her sleep but other than that, she doesn't show any aggression and he tends to ignore her warning signs anyway. They have always played rough but lately it just seems to be the only way they interact and I'm afraid Buckley is going to injure her soon. Occasionally Abbie will instigate play but 90% of the time Buckley will start it by jumping on her, pulling her ears or running at full speed towards her. Abbie doesn't enjoy this at all and is often on guard, especially outside. She will often hug the wall and fences outside to avoid being 'attacked'. He pushes her out the way to ensure he is first through the door and will steal her dinner away from her if I'm not there to supervise him. He is otherwise quite a well behaved dog and responds well to training but the only thing that stops him when he gets too rough is a jet of water from a spray bottle but i am not around 24/7 to supervise their play. With other dogs, Buckley is a different dog. He is well behaved, shows respect and will keep his distance if given a warning...and when away from Buckley, Abbie comes out her shell and is more care free. I'm just not sure what kind of training needs to be done to stop this rough play...?
  19. I've heard some pretty awful things about territories to be honest. My partner was going to buy an 07 territory. Signed the contract on the condition of RAC approval but they found it to be not road worthy and after doing more research, we found that they have a lot of problems with the ball joints. Although apparently this problem has been rectified in the brand new territories. In the end, he bought a 2010 mitsibishi outlander. Not as big as the territory from the outside but the interior room is very similar. We fold the back seats up for the two dogs, and they have a lot of space. Easily fits a large crate, with enough room for the other dog to lie down. I love it and am considering buying one for myself when i upgrade The klugers look great but were a bit too pricey for us.
  20. As it turned out the bleeding ceased that day and i decided to keep an eye on it. Exactly one week later (last friday) i woke up to her acting very quiet, shaky and off her food. Blood was present again. Took her into the vet that morning and the prognosis was much more than we were all expecting! She had a rapid heart rate and temp of 42 and was admitted for blood tests and x-rays. She had developed Peritonitis and the vet discovered a tennis ball sized abscess in her abdomen (something he said he had never seen before) That afternoon she had the surgery to remove the abscess. She bounced back very quickly after the surgery and we able to take her home the next day. The pathology results on the abscess indicated it to basically be a big ball of infectious tissue with pockets of foreign bacteria. Possible causes could be unsterile surgery equipment used during her spay surgery (this was done at a different vet) It could have even been a bit of swab left behind but so much time has passed since the spay and now that nothing was identifiable. Unfortunately, as is with the case in humans, some dogs just seem to be more susceptible to infections. In either case, she seems like a whole new carefree and happy dog now and is on the mend
  21. I have a 8 month old english pointer. She was spayed at 6 months and had a few complications with that. The wound became infected and her body was rejecting the internal stitches but this eventually sorted out with 2 courses of antibiotics. During that time I noticed she would often have bloody discharge after going to the toilet. The vet said that was quite normal and wasn't concerned. Anyway 2 months on and everything normal, I noticed this afternoon that the bloody discharge is back. Only a really tiny amount but I'm just a little concerned about what is causing it. Anyone have any ideas?
  22. Just curious, do you know why you were advised against mixing kibble and raw? My two have kibble in the morning and at night, but i mix in veggie puree with the kibble every night. I also put in raw mince, sardines or chicken necks some nights..Not so much for variety, but more to fill them up and save on the kibble costs.
  23. No advice sorry, but i have a very similar dilemma. My girl has a large under bite and as she is eating, she tends to flick all the food up the side of the bowl with her nose. I tend to just leave her be but she often looses a lot of her meal because the other dog finishes first and has time to shovel up all her spillage. This might be suitable for you...Neater Feeders
