  1. It's only because I can't interact with them as they're so focussed on just one thing. Kinda like a human who has only one area of interest, and unless that's your area of interest also, it gets a bit boring.
  2. Faves: bull terriers - clowns, loyal, so ugly they're gorgeous! Rotties - big beautiful softies, Scotty Terriers - big personalities Least faves: Foxies - little, yappy Pugs, Shitzus, Maltese - based on looks Ball obsessed dogs - bit one dimensional
  3. OMG Hated it. I started crying about 10 mins in and didn't stop to the end. Huge, bawling, sobbing for breath crying. I was distressed all day. Why on earth do we want to do that to ourselves? I've since avoided Red Dog, War Horse and anything else remotely tragic involving animals
  4. I've had that issue. My girl used to wait and catch and eat her brother's poo as it was coming out of him, nice and steaming and hadn't even touched the ground! I tried everything, tried it all, pineapple, etc. nothing worked. I asked vets and experienced people and they said not to bother doing anything as it doesn't harm them in any way and they generally grow out of it. Mine did, mostly. It has nothing to do with deficiencies or their current diet or anything like that. It can be a learned behaviour when they watch their mum cleaning up the whelping area by eating the puppies poo. My advice, do nothing, just look away!
  5. "He's a bull terrier - but a mini. No he's not a pit bull, they look quite different, separate breed altogher. Big sook. Yes, they can be but its about how they're raised and socialised. Very loyal to humans" 'NO HE'S NOT A PITBULL" I sometimes yell as I hear them mumuring on the opposite side of the street
  6. I guess the Tracrolimus is treating the original condition - solar blepharo conjunctivitis - allergic immune reaction the sun. Apparently this chronic condition has been the trigger for the the dry eye.
  7. I did a search for dry eye, but to no avail, which I thought was strange as I understand it's quite common? Anyway, my 3yo mini bull terrier has now been diagnosed with dry eye after a long bout of conjunctivitis in his unpigmented eye. I am keen to hear of others' experiences? Is the condition always life long? What medication has worked? Has anyone chosen to go down the surgery route? Mitch has been on coritcosteriods, but they didn't work, so we've just started on Conoptal antibiotic cream, Tacromlimus drops and off-the-counter dry eye drops.
  8. Thanks all. We did try the pred eye drops, but they didn't work. His eye is a little better which is great after so long. There's no apparent thirst or appetite change but the lethargy is marked. Is it totally horrible to admit I'm loving the peace and quiet a little!
  9. I'm a fan of Fitabac and got it from my vet surgery. I like the tip about infant's sunscreen though. Bound to be cheaper
  10. My 3 yo mini bull terrier has been diagnosed with solar blepharoconjunctivitis. Basically his non-pigmented is allergic to the sun and has chronic conjunctivitis. After 6 months of different drops to no avail, the doggie opthamologist has put him on Solone 25mg or Prednisolone - a corticosteriod. Reading the leaflet I'm a bit alarmed at all the side effects associated with the drug. My dog has been on them for 2 days only but is already completely lethargic. I have a followup appointment in 2 days time, but in the meantime I'm curious to learn of anyone else's experiences with the drug?
  11. I'm thinking of getting my mini bull terrier a t-shirt saying "I'm NOT a Pit Bull". Oh dear, I get those comments all the time. At first it used to annoy the hell out of me, but now I take it as an opportunity to educate the public, even if it's only one person at a time. I much prefer they'd ask rather than just think it to themselves. Part of the problem, beside the word 'bull' was that the bull terrier in Charlotte's Web was called Pitty apparently. Personally I can't see how you can get such a concave nose and a convex nose mixed up, but that's just me. Takes all kinds I guess.

  13. Fostering is great, good for you. I've fostered cats/kittens before. I love cats in general, but am definitely a dog person, so haven't fostered a puppy as I can't imagine giving him/her back at the end. That's the biggest difficulty as far as I'm concerned. My last 2 kittens I fostered are now officially adopted (by me) and well and truly part of the family - oops, foster fail!
  14. I let my dog off leash as much as possible. He loves it, I love it. I went to great lengths to socialise him and train him as a pup and now we reap the benefits in terms of freedom. He won't approach another dog if I tell him not to, but will if I judge it OK (eg. have communicated with the owner or the other dogs behaviour is unmistakenly friendly). I really think you're punishing the majority because of a few bad apples. I think it's it a great thing that dogs can be off leash and I feel sorry for dogs that are never given that opportunity (usually because their owners haven't put in the work). Australia has the most restrictive laws/attitudes/behaviours to dogs as it is anywhere in the world, and I'm surprised to find this attitude here on this forum - a dog 'loving' place. Learn how to read and prevent potentially ugly situations, and don't go down the nanny state path of attempting to legislate us all please. There is enough hyped up fear of dogs out there in the general community without inciting more. It bodes ill for all dogs in the end.
  15. Although I'm sure the NTCM courses are great, they probably are more suited to professionals in the industry. I'm just really doing it out of personal interest. I'd be OK to spend $100-200 but not thousands. I might suggest my local neighbourhood house run a course.
  16. OMG if I could ONE dog to do all that I'd be ecstatic! Wow. Notice how he put them on their backs at the start when he was patting individuals.
  17. I'm trying to locate a doggy massage course that I can do? I don't want to work in it, just learn the basic techniques for my own (and of course my dogs) enjoyment. Does anyone know of anything remotely like that? No more than an hours drive from Woodend hopefully
  18. I'm very glad for you it wasn't cancerous - yet, I guess. How old is he? And how hard is it to keep them out of the sun! I've ordered a hat from fluppies, so we'll how/if he takes to that. I'll bear the sunnies and the mesh goggles in mind then if the hat is a no go.
  19. His own little rash vest, that's great. Thanks for the link, I'll check them out
  20. I did a search but couldn't find anything, so apologies if this is a repeat topic. My bull terrier has just been diagnosed with solar Blepharconjunctivitis. Basically sun damage in his unpigmented eye (the other one has a brown patch). He's only 3 and this bout can be fixed with medication but the opthamologist said to either keep him out of the sun or else get him a hat. If not he will definitely have cancerous eye tumours by the time he's 10. Scary stuff to hear. Now how the hell do you keep a dog out of the sun? He's a totally indoor dog anyway, but we do have our hourly walk a day. So... it's a hat then. Does anyone have any they can reommend? It's got to be about fit mostly so that he'll wear it.
  21. Once/twice a week (in cooler weather only) I jump on my push bike and take my bully for a run/walk around our local roads (country roads) or into town. He loves it, gets all wiggly and waggly when the bike is rolled out and we only ever go at his pace. One day I'm on the far left hand side of the lane when a ute roars by within inches of my shoulder honking his horn and giving me the finger. Well, I gave it back,as you do, and he turned around and came up yelling at me that what I was doing was illegal and to get me and my dog and my bike off the road. I tell him he's crazy, that its not illegal and after 5 mins of energetic debate he takes off. I ride home fuming, thinking what an idiot. I ask my cop friends what the actual legal status is and lo and behold it is actually illegal. Ooops. Not that I'll probably stop doing it mind you. The roads I ride on are virtually deserted, and the bully loves it, so there! Did you all know that it's illegal though?
  22. I had to ask a friend to use my stash key to enter my house and get something I needed while I was away. My friend hadn't been to my house or met my bull terrier before. She searched through the downstairs, found what I needed but then was worried, because she knew I had a dog but couldn't see him. So she went upstairs to look for him, looked everywhere, finally lifted up the doona to inspect a suspicious lump and there he was looking sleepily up at her. She ruffled his ears, put the doona cover back over him and left. Sigh.
  23. Thanks for all your advice - overwhelmingly you seem to be saying seek a specialist opinion, which I certainly will. Yep, they did the dry eye test and it was all clear. And no, his eyelids and surrounding hair are dry. Ok, well I better go find out then.
  24. I know you're not vets and its impossible to diagnose from a description, but just wondering if any of you and had any similar experiences/ outcomes? My mini bull terrier is 3yo and for the last 6 months has had a pus discharge from one eye only. The conjuctiva is red but he doesn't seem too bothered by it except for occasional squinting. I have to clear the crusty, pus stuff out 2-3 times /day. The vet put him on 3 different types of antiobiotic creams including prednisolone. After 6 months of this with no improvement, I suggested entropion (eyelid rolled in and lashes rubbing on cornea). Vet said it was a possibility but the eyelid would only be rolled in ever so slightly (although it only takes one or 2 lashes apparently to cause damage). He said it would be worth operating but there is no guarantee that this is what is causing the issue and he can't determine that by visual examination alone. A second vet has concurred with the original opinion. We've ruled out dry eye, grass seeds, ulcers. His eyesight is fine and not impacted at this stage. So do I go ahead and get him operated on and hope this fixes the issue or????? Any other ideas what it could be?
