  1. on average, bath mine fortnight.

I have a hydrobath. best investment ever.

Bought a flow valve regulator the other day to do faces and puppies. I normally use Fido's free itch or a natural shampoo in it. When they blow the coats, tend to bath weekly, but on the off week, only use warm water, rather than detergent.

  2. I am on tank water here, and only have a single tank (about 22L) and generally get to bath two border collies in there ok. Of course if one is cleaner than the other, I will bath that one first.

I generally use the fidos free itch concentrate, followed up with some conditioner mixed in water in a spray bottle after I blow dry.

  3. I have mine now on Eagle Pack. Found it great.

I have also in the past, fed Supercoat, Optimum (before when it was called Principle) and various cheaper ones.

In addition to dry, they get meat trimmings from butcher, bones and veges. They also get the occassional, sardines/tuna/mackeral in natural oil.

As far as vitamins/minerals, go, most have been added into the commercial dog foods. Some are better than others of course, but much is personal preferance

  4. If you have a need of them, I do not like the Halti Brand. I find it is not as adjustable as say the Gentle Leader or Black Dog Head Halters.

My preferance of the brands is Black Dog.

It is more adjustable around the muzzle, where Haltis can be poor fitting there. Likewise the Halti Brand because it uses shiny webbing, you have to put a stitch or two in the strap that goes behind the head to secure it because it will work itself loose. The Black Dog there uses a cotton ribbed webbing which does not move as much as the Halti Brand

  5. I am a no clip person too.

Husky breeder ages ago said the same thing. coat grows back thicker and quicker each time, then is also goes wolly and yucky.

Keep the undercoat out, get those kiddy pools and place sand in it with enough water (know that probably wrong thing to say in drought) to keep it damp in the shade somewhere, and plenty of water in summer.

Be sensible and dont exercise in the heat.

  6. Have used the Fidos free itch in my hydrobath as well, have not had any problems with it. The only thing to watch out is that in hydrobaths, if you add too much it froths up heaps and if you are not careful you end up with a sud bath instead.

Other than that I have used pine oil. Bought someone's oatmeal shampoo and found that it caused irritation more than the fidos did...

found also washing in flea shampoo fortnightly also helped to control any fleas here on the property without having to use the likes of frontline etc.

  7. Hope they took the dog to the vet..

Ratsack poisoning is not pretty.. they literally bleed to death slowly.

Also make sure it was Ratsack and not other similar products like Talon.. as Talon has different chemicals in it as it is designed for rats who wont take Ratsack. The vet needs to know this.

I know what its like. Neighbour threw a bait to one of my dogs once..and had to go through the Vitamin K thing. Not cheap.

  8. Had to do it on a dog I used to have almost weekly.. mind you being a husky.. probably a bit easier..

But I always did it externally.. gloves, lubricant still, tissues then heaps of treats. Just dont bend you head down to REALLY see what you are doing.. you may end up with something in your eye.

vet taught me.. position your fingers at 4 and 8 o'clock.

  9. Think it comes down to the relationship between dog and handler.

I know one person who got UD with a dachie.

There is one person now out there trialling open with a pom.. Gee that little dog is great to watch.

There are others who have borders I have seen, and they are not too crash hot...

So no I do not think breed is the bee all and end all.. Yes certain breeds maybe easier, but it comes down to individual dog and person.

  10. Tracey,

I went to watch only, with no intention of entering for a number of reasons, and was bumped on the head at 9am when I got there... Not at 5.30pm when I actually went in because of the large numbers. By that stage, all I wanted to do was go home, as others were probably wanting to do the same. Long day,too much sun and probably not enough water.

I know my dog's capabilities, and while she was itching to get into the sheep from the outside, once inside, I knew she was not switched on (neither was I). But she did no worse than some others that made the attempt.

It was mostly a good day, and good to see the turn out. The only thing was that no-one seemed to know whether they were Arthur or Martha.. One minute one thing was being done, then next thing something else.

Suggest that a cut off number/time be thought of next time...Save everyone frustrations (including that of judges).

You should be pleased to note that I have no interest/intention of following through with it with her.

Edit: Speaking of databases - did you get the deposit into your account? Had sent confirmation email through with bank acknowledgement.

    Tracie

  11. Got Collies.. Ivermectin for us is akin to playing with fire.

I use a monthly tablet. 1st month. easy to remember.

I then use an all wormer every three months (got that on a fridge magnet thing to remind me) to do everything else.

found looking at all those products. Only one or two products (depending on whose brand) does it all. The other ones, well you still have to come back and do something else. Fleas, I dont actively treat for them unless I start seeing them on the dog, or have been in a known flea area as I dont seem to have them here. Found fortnight baths in flea shampoo good enough for me to control any fleas I may have here.

  12. Got mine from a local distributer in Brisbane. I get breeder's rates.

Its Puppy formula, yellow bag 15kg. I dont have the product list handy to give you full details. As I was expecting a litter I bought two bags at once, so whether that contributed to being cheaper I dont know.

But as I either have to travel to get it, or they have to travel to deliver it, I normally buy bulk to save petrol/freight.

  13. I have put Skye on it while she was pregnant and now while the pups are growing, they are/will be on it too (they still on sludge - there no other way to put it)..

Love it. But I also have my dogs on lamb briskets, chicken necks/wings etc... I also use Petz saussage to add some variety "wet" to their diet.

I get my 15kg bags for $65, so it is even cheaper than feeding Supercoat at $42/bag (as you have to feed more of it)

  14. I only use flat collars, at most a martingale. I have two black-dog halters here at home, which I don't use.

I have trained my dogs from 8 weeks to walk politely on a lead without pulling. I have also done heaps of focus training where the dog watches you. With food, and heaps of praise. Did all the initial training with food and without a lead attached, so never had a pulling uncontrollable dog.

Dog trained properly should never need a halti. They are evil things. People pull on them like they pull on check chains causing the dog to whip their heads around to their bums. No wonder those dogs often then need to see dog chiropracters.

(also note: same goes with check/choke chains, incorrect use of those also causes damage)

Biggest thing I find with MOST obedience establishments, the trainers do not spend enough time SHOWING people how to PROPERLY use the equipment before getting out there and doing the paddock bash routine. Then if they have shown the people how to use it properly, they do not stop and correct the PERSON when they are using the equipment incorrectly.

  15. ooh. Tracey.

It is certainly cheaper to get the dew claws off while they are being desexed. Last time (about 2 years ago) I had Jemma speyed, it cost $80 extra. To have them removed while not getting speyed, I think the last quote I got was around $300 cause as an adult, they need to go under anesthetic
