  1. Lately I have heard and seen more unhealthy dogs on Barf than I see dogs eating PAL...

Mine puppies have all had a good quality puppy dry food, mixed with chicken necks, meat trimmings from the butcher, lamb brisket bones to chew as they are lovely and soft, and scotty's chicken rolls thrown in.

It is easy, no fuss.. and the dogs get the balance of minerals/vitamins etc they need from premium dry food..

  2. Westilover,

Do not know what your butcher is like, but there is one near me who also puts the left over sausage meat into the pet mince.. including the additives which go into sausages..

Not very nice.. bought some once... absolutely disgusting. If I have to buy meat from the butcher I ask for the offcuts.. it still can be beef, lamb or pork, but it is the meat itself and you cut it.. Some can be rather fatty... but when I have seen the pet minces...

If it is only the scraps which is put through the mincer, maybe ok.. but if they put in the waste from their other stock....like maybe the crumbed stuff which also has additives in it (they buy it premixed in 20 kg buckets) I would be careful.

  3. If the dog has not been used to barf before you started it.. try slowly going from his old food to your new diet.

Me personally: I mix a good quality dry dog food with the bones, sardines etc. One thing about the commercial dry dog foods, is that with the research gone into them, they contain (supposedly) the vitamins and minerals the dog needs... which may not be achieved from home cooking. The only time my dogs get a commercial tin food is about once every 6 months to clean them out, or in an emergency when I am out of food (which is not very often)

  4. Truth be told... most viruses are air borne and puppies can still catch it no matter.

I have always taken mine to puppy school, either at the vets or a local private training place without any problems.

Check with your local vets to see if they know of any particular outbreaks. If you take to a vet.. make sure they are clean.

When you think about it.. I sometimes wonder about vet puppy schools.. why do most people take their dog to the vet???? Despite antibacterials and disenfectants.. you have to wonder - you get golden staff from hospitals and they have rigerous disenfecting routines.

The risk of infection compared to an unsocialised puppy?? know what I would choose.

  5. Was not saying to go off it.. We all have our preferences.

It sounded in your earlier post that you may not have known that for Tick treatments... Frontline needed to be applied fortnightly.

Lived on a dairy and small crop farm myself while growing up.. know where you are also comming from.

  6. Jodi b,

With Frontline and Ticks... You HAVE to do it fortnightly anyway.. so for tick treatment you are not "doubling up"...

Just be aware.. do not know how it is in Sydney.. but up here.. Frontline Plus is not crash hot when it comes to tick treatments. According to local vet (I live in Very high tick country).. The main source of tick cases they are seeing in the surgery (other than dogs which arent on any form of treatment) are dogs on Frontline.

  7. bought mine from Conmurra Hydrobaths:

    www.conmurrahydrobaths.com.au

Single tank, heated cost me $1100.

Fidos also sell hydrobaths: Dont know what they are like

    www.fidos.com

Have seen them second hand in the papers for anywhere between $400 and $900 on average. thing to consider would be pump and element (if heated) especially if sold on from a groomer or mobile hydrobath company... they have had a lot of use...No matter what is said

  8. Had a person come out to my place for about 5 years before buying my own..

You can pick them up in the weekend papers/Trading post if you ring VERY early for anywhere between $400 - $900.

Bought mine new for $1,100.... Given I have three dogs...nearly to be four...and it used to cost me $15/dog/fortnight... it will only take me 2 years to pay it off

  9. If dogs were meant to eat cooked meat.. they would have learnt to sit over a fire and cook it. :(

Then why do the Japanese and other asian cultures eat Raw meat??? Gee I wonder why they are not all dead from eating all that live bacteria.

True cooking food takes out the bacteria that live in that medium.. it also takes out a certain amount of vitamins, minerals etc... If overcooked, food as the same nutritional value of eating cardboard..

  10. Vet told me as I sometimes have the problem with my dogs and chicken bones. It goes through them like a dose of epsom saults causing what looks like concrete coloured and consistancy poos.

The bacteria is found naturally in their gut. What they have found is that if during the cleaning and processing of the carcus, the stomach contents get in contact with other parts of the chicken (through poor handling etc), then it is possible to cause the reaction when eating.

Have had it a number of times when I have bought frozen chicken necks from a number of the pet food places mainly. Chicken is one of those meats which you have to be very careful about salmanella poisoning as it is very easy to get. Even for the human grade stiff. Poor hygiene and handling of chicken can cause a dose of the nasties.

  11. Dru,

So does most tick treatments.. many think, they have the collars, the rinses the tablets and think they do not have to do anything more. some also think that once a day is enough.. maybe for a large heavy dog.. but certainly not light weight or small ones. Stil then there is never any guarantee.

Found frontline to be useless against fleas too. (again personal experience) Then again, I do not have any faith in the top spot medications. When the companies say you can put a 40kb pipette on a 5kg dog without any side effects due to the error or margin factored into the product, you have to think about their effectiveness to start with.

At least when we had the dairy... we mixed up the solution to the weight of the animal...you knew what you were giving was the right dose.

  12. I have borders.. Long coats and use Tick Collars. Call me skimpy, but Proban for multiple dogs over 10kg is very expensive unless you can buy a bulk supply at a cheaper rate.. (have not been able to do so yet).

You can also use Frontline in conjunction with tick collars...my personal experience with frontline is that it is not worth the paper it is written on.

If you wash the dog, use something like Fido's or another pryethian flea tick/rinse. Do not use solutions like Malaban, Maldacin etc as these products use the same chemical used in tick collars and proban.. you can overdose the dog on the poison.

Point to remember with tick collars.. it does work throughout the coat, however if you have a long haired dog, it can take up to 10 days to get back through the coat...

For me: tick collars and twice daily checks. I have also cleared the yard of as much scrub and rubbish as I can to limit the ticks. However this does not stop birds from dropping them in the yard. I also do not have a tree corridor for animals like possums to enter my property. I also keep my dogs away from creeks and other scrubby areas. If I take them to the beach, I take it to one which has no scrub nearby. (Sandgate beach is great - unlike Nudgee, which has mangroves nearby the off lead area)

For those Queensland readers: January Issue of Dog world has a two page article on ticks. (Have not heard of a monthly injection either, and our vet regularly posts articles in the local newspaper.. if there was such a thing, I would think that he would have posted it.. But I will stand corrected if there is something new on the market)

  13. Guys,

If there are any people who have any special requirements with regards to their dogs/themselves, please let me know. I have three crates here (2x medium and one large), plus a secure kennel run. Depending on numbers I may need an extra table for lunch..

I also have livestock on the property, if any of those who are comming have dogs that like to chase horses, please let me know as one of the horses here will kick to kill if it is chased.

K9: Is there any special requirements you require? I have a broad jump, high jump, send-a-way box, articles (although would prefer handlers to use their own articles) and weave poles here, for those requiring assistance with open/UD work.

    Cheers

    Tracie

  14. Hi guys.

For those that may not have followed the thread.. I have just changed my name from Huskymiko to Skyes Dalimit.

To cut a long story short, huskymiko was named after a siberian husky I onced owned. Bless her soul she has been dead these last two years and have asked Troy(thankyou Troy) to change my name to that of my brood bitch.

Any people who are interested, please PM me and I will give you the address. There is plenty of parking available. I have a bbq, and am planning on having a bbq lunch, so I would ask BYO meat/drinks and if we can organise everyone who is attending to bring a salady item, that would be lovely and will reduce the cost on everyone else for lunch.

I am at Samford, which is about half hour from the city.

  15. Harleys mum,

Checked with the vet yesterday as I had to get some heart worm stuff. Revolution DOES NOT do ticks.

He also said that do not rely on Frontline for ticks. From what they are seeing it is proving to be ill-effective (we live in Tick country).

Vets main recommendation is proban or collars with twice daily checks. If dog has long coat, clip it.

Have heard the virbac collar is worse for poisoning if eaten/chewed. Then if I had young puppies, I would also be sus about the bayer one too - as pups just love to chew.

  16. Harleys Mum,

I do not know much about revolution, but did not think it did ticks.

Just check the active ingredient as if it is the same/same family as the tick collar you can poison the dog.

Swimming/washing is the worst for tick collars... rain unless they are out in the downpour should not affect it. I am lucky here as I do not have long grass where I am and I do not frequent dog parks that much where there is scrub.
