  1. Idiot. What hope have we got when supposed experts don't even know what they're on about? Were did you get that the vet said 'lock jaw' from? She certainly did not use that term during this interview. The journo said 'lock jaw'. Absolutely correct. However, on the Seven News Melbourne report, the same Dr Sharee Maas states @ 1'19'' 's/he had a lock jaw so he wasn't going to move his head off that dog. I managed to get a vein and anaesthetise that dog'. http://au.news.yahoo.com/vic/latest/a/-/article/17536298/two-women-mauled-in-dog-attacks/ Just saying. I just love your thinking. Discuss the correct use of the wording. Completely ignore the fact the bloody dog still had hold of its victum and wouldnt let go until it was knocked unconsious be it by caving its head in with a hammer as happened in a previous case, or in this case a vet was handy to knock it out by injection. Or in the case in England 23 knife wounds later and dying. It still didnt let go until it was unconsious for god's sake Not even interfering humans around it nor the needle being inserted distracted it from its purpose. You people amaze me. What words wont cause you so much distress? Thank you. I'm only too happy to spread the love. I don't quite understand the phrase you use 'you people amaze me'. What 'people'? I'm only one person. Yet you directed 'you people' at me? Hmmmm... go figure, I'm at a loss. Nothing has distressed me whatsoever - in answer to your last sentence. I tend to think three out of four who found the words used unacceptable constitutes using the plural. Still waiting for an answer instead of more questions though.
  2. Because someone started this thread and put a link with a photo and a news report. To which many here find the words uses highly inappropriate. Then of course and idiot like me asked what words are approprite. To which all the replies seem to be restricted to "ranting" and now "Bizarre" Whatever happened to the art of debate?
  3. Before ANKC's arrived the men and women who left us the legacy of all this different breeds created them by a process called culling. No dog that did not fit their idea of what they believed they wanted was culled. Be it given away as a pet or killed. Poor temprement usually had only one end, killed. Now of course poor temprement is an entire industry of animal behavourists and temprement modification instead. Since this is now the reality, what once never got the chance to make headlines like these IS going to be the norm. Regardless of breed or heinz 57 as they were called when I was a kid. If it got out and was dangerous it was shot. Most of the time it was the breeder or the owner who made the call rather than risk their neighbours or their children. But then everyone knew everyone in the neighbourhood and cared about them. Not so today. Many peoplle now dont even know their neighbours name.
  4. Gee you assumed a lot. I did not end up in hospital and on morphine for two weeks from being attacked by any dog that looked even minutely like the ones being shown in the videos, all large mammals over a pivotal weight can do enormous damage. I can now manage daytime on just Panedine Forte, although my doctors would prefer I used Nerfen forte, but no way I can sleep without Endone much as I hate taking it. So the damage unfortunately isnt just in my mind as I so wish it was just overactive imagination. Its the way those who happen to be unfortunate enough that their pet looks like the ones in the video's that are so vehemetly defending each and every one that looks like theirs because they feel their pet is threatened. Wake up. Your dog is at home. Its not the mutt in the video. Attacking the papers or the press reporters, or the video makers as villifiying their loved breed dog, isnt going to do much besides word fights. Is it? If a mass murderer is arrested and is a dead spit for your husband, wife, or child? Are you going to attack any one who might find the real killer deserves conviction and sentencing because you loved one might also be arrested and sentenced for looking like the real killer? The real killer must go free to protect your look alike family member? Because that is what you are doing even if you do not realise it.
  5. Idiot. What hope have we got when supposed experts don't even know what they're on about? Were did you get that the vet said 'lock jaw' from? She certainly did not use that term during this interview. The journo said 'lock jaw'. Were you "ranting" when you made that comment? It did appear you did not like the term used. So to ask what term is acceptable to you does not elicit a reply as to what is. Can you only find the word "dog" or "ranting" in your dictionary?
  6. The cause of dog attacks, ultimately, is a combination of dog temperament and dog management, plus other factors such as health, child management, and bad luck. There is a large hereditary component to temperament. It is hardly breeder bashing to say that breeders are, to an extent, responsible for turning out pups with antisocial temperament and placing them with people who are likely to manage them poorly. I used Labbies as an example to AVOID breed bashing. They are my chosen breed. They also happen to be a good example of the fact that pedigree breeders are not held to the temperament of their breed standard...despite your assertion that "it has never been a free for all for registered breeders". Nobody is saying that breeders are the whole problem. But breeders are in a position to do their bit to reverse the dog attack problem through being more mindful of temperament and more careful about where they place pups.I would love to see the authorities make an attempt to work out the origins of problem dogs. And if some breeders, registered or otherwise, seem to be behind a string of problem attack dogs, then those breeders need to be held to account. Since I susect 90% if not more of these creatures that get themselves in the headlines cannot be traced to any ANKC breeder even in the first 3 generation if at all ever. The three who took down the jogger are not even a recognised breed in this country. So who is going to cop the rap for breeding them? Faceless, namless Joe public.

What words wont cause you so much distress? Accurate ones. How are you going to define "accurate". What words can you cope with to describe a mammal that does not let go the attacked even while the sedation needle is being inserted and is still hanging on until rendered unconsious? A dog. Ha so the public thinks the vet simply attacked the "dog" with the injection and rendered it unconsious for no valid reason other than it was a dog? Then why didnt she knock out both instead of only one? Joe public would very curious to know the answer to that one.

  9. As I understand it, the issue was the dog wasn't registered in that municipality. I think. And yes, I totally understand where you're coming from, unfortunately. I spend a lot of time assuring SWF owners at my park that no, that SBT isn't a pitbull, and no, it's not going to come over here and rip your throat out. Every bully breed is automatically a baby killer in some peoples' eyes, no matter how well socialised and friendly. (and I'm a toy poodle owner!) Perhaps we need to bann all photos and videos of any attack related incident that way people couldnt be given the chance to perhaps link appearance with danger of a similar repeat? Also ban any breed mention to the generic term dog? No then people may become afraid of all dogs? Perhaps "unidentified mammal" may eliminate the problem. You cant fear something if you dont know what it is or may look like.
  10. So you yourself admit that there is "goodness knows what" breeds mixed in there and yet you will state that they are Pitties? Seems pretty bizarre logic. Why are people so caught up in labeling breeds? As if suddenly knowing what breed the dog MIGHT be will shed light on everything? I have a mixed breed dog, adopted as a puppy from the RSPCA as a Staffy cross. She is now above knee height, has a high waist tuck and is gawd knows what breed mixes. There are so many possible breed mixes that MAY make up her looks. She could be a small "bull arab" mix, an Amstaff X Whippet, a dalmation x staffy... the list goes on and the likelyhood that there are MANY breeds in her genetics stop me from even bothering to guess. Yet everyone is so caught up in labels that they cannot take "Mixed breed" for an answer. We are out walking and someone will comment on how lovely she is and asks, "What breed is she?", I reply with "She is a mixed breed dog"...."Yes, but what breeds?" "Mixed of unknown origins" "Yeah but what kinds...". It is bizarre and can go around and around in circles, most people simply cannot take "Mixed breed" for an answer even though it is the most accurate I can give. Many people believe that their BYB dogs are purebred. The amount of times I have seen someone claiming that their dog or puppies are purebred when you can clearly tell that they are NOT is astronomical. Seen it in Rotties, Neo Mastiffs, Mastiffs, Dobermans, Staffords, Amstaffs, Cavs, Poodles, Chihuahuas... the list is endless. How are we to know that the owners of these three dogs didn't truly believe that they were Staffies, or that their breed was predominantly staffy? They do appear to be Stafford CROSSES and given the huge numbers of "purebred" staffies being BYB, quite often crossed with Amstaffs, the breed confusion is understandable. I have seen people actually advertising pups as PUREBRED Staffies and going on to state that they are bred from "purebred (unpapered I would assume)" SBT mother and a purebred Amstaff father and so therefore they are still "Purebred" Staffies . It defies logic and yet people, who do not educate themselves further, believe it. Yes these dogs looked too tall to be SBT but at the same time they looked to short to be Amstaffs. This thread has been very educational and I enjoyed reading the advice on how to intervene in a dog fight and/or protect yourself and your dogs. Very enlightening. NO dear to save your fragile sensibilities they are hence forth to be described as chihuahua crosses. So? Has anyone contstructive ideas what do we do we need to carry on our person when bluff doesnt work and the attack is in earnest, what do you do next, if we are caught alone with no outside help forthcomming, when these chi x'breds like the ones in the video, or the mega bulk ones that took the jogger down, dont back off and wont let go. You're the one intent on labels. Is it safe to call it a dog then? What can you cope with?

  13. I have or should say had a red nosed gold chihuahua. Do you really think the dog in that video, and those dogs are the ones who did do it. not some generic photo. Are chihuahua's? Drawing a long bow, and decided yep they are. Does that make what happened any less disgusting? Somehow it would have been marvellous if they could have been shrunk to 3 or less kg instead of the 15 to 20 kgs of those in the video, or the 40 or so the jogger had to contend with. I doubt he would have had his heart exposed, or the woman her finger severed if the dog didnt have the size or the strength to do so. Would calling the poor dears chihuahua crosses make you feel better? If so, do so. Then maybe you might be able to think a bit straighter and come up with some solutions to keep these bloody chihuahua crosses capable of these atrocoties off the street instead of defending the little bastards because they look like your darling mutley. Who now (unfortunatley still looks a bit like them) is actually instead going to be thought to be a chihuahua cross anyway.
  14. Maybe if they like the initials let em keep BSL BUT rebadge it Bad Supervisors Legislation?
  15. Just love the way the owners of these dogs prefer to call their darlings "staffies" instead of Pitties. AS if trying to link them to the english staffie will in peoples minds that makes them cuter and cuddlier. I notice one of the dogs had the so much admired red nose in the BEST pitties, as is the "rare" blue in again, pitties and amstaffs just as described and in his photos of his previous much loved ones, that chap who brought me his pittie pup to microchip. Considering probably 90 percent of these dogs dont have a pedigree parent and come from the invisible breeders this is not going to stop. Only CRIMINAL charges against owners might? Although I wouldnt count on that anytime soon. The chap who I met through my friend now has an AVO out against him since she broke up with him, has shown violence and broken twice into he home since she broke up with him. Sounds pretty much like he and his peferred breed are a good match doesnt it? No legislation is going to stop these people from doing as they please, people like him dont respect the law anyway. Protect yourself or pay the consequences might be the real message if you want to stay with any chance of safe. found this blue english staffie photo. notice the difference in the length of the legs? http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Pets-Horses/Dogs/Dogs-for-Sale/AdNumber=TP005594744 I would be making a bet, those mutts are the product of the thousands of invisible breeders with goodness knows what behind them We do need to be more proactive. Neither these dogs or the peope who want and like a dog that can do this and accidents like are happening and them getting out isnt going to go away. Protect yourself or pay the consequences might be the real message if you want to stay with any chance of safe. Although Im not sure what will? Pepper spray is now banned isnt it? I know my husband used to kill dingos by pulling off the stirrup leather and running them down and one swing with the leather and the massive nickel plated 4 bar iron would despatch them in one hit. Dont know if you could try that on foot with these kind of attacks through? Pretty scary that chap in england decided to use the knife and it took 23 times before that dog finally let his dog go, you really have to decide. It would be more sensible, but who could ever be that sensible and walk away and let your dog lose its life and save you from the injuries of these women. Even scarier that jogger didnt have a dog to attract his attackers, they went for him. This is todays reality, it isnt going to go away. What can you carry legally to drive off an attack if standing tall and bluff isnt going to work? Maybe thats what we all need to learn?
  16. The Bull breed is under the microscope like it or not, so highlighting other breeds will do what to save the Bull breeds? The Bull breed supporters if they were sensible IMHO is admit to the fact that people are out there screwing the breed up and some action needs to be taken to stop them doing it. We all know that there are scores of well bred Bullies out there even Pitbulls that WILL NOT ramdomly attack people, there a scores of good dogs out there so: nail the people breeding crap and help get the rubbish off the street. Leave Bully breeding to people who know what they are doing?? Isnt going to happen, read the stats over 58 percent of dogs in this country never found their new home through a pet shop or a registered breeder. Eliminate petshop sales and registered breeders and you still have some 200,000 comming from no known source. That source will never be subject to any forms of control.
  17. Absolutely and totally true, the owners of these dogs are to blame however, the other side of the coin is if these roaming dogs were not aggressive dogs, the people encountering them may have escaped with a good licking instead which creates the breed factor and let's guess the breed.....Bull breeds again, what can you say in their defence when it's the same type of dog over and over again?? I don't advocate to ban the breed, what needs to be done is investigate who bred this crap and who's got them........the old breeding free for all strikes again......law needs to stop these BYB's and random breedings in the hands of people that haven't a clue how to breed a stable dog fit for community habitation. Here you go, some attacks by non bull breeds. Happy now? Ridgeback: http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2013/06/05/243376_local-news.html Cattle Dogs: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-04-03/dog-attack-victim-27let-down27-by-justice-system/4606616 Great Dane x: http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/16434983/call-for-action-on-dog-attacks/ In my googling, I have discovered that attacks by other breeds are seldomly reported more than once and usually stay in the local news. Bull breed attacks get nation wide attention and often multiple articles are written on the same incident. The BH incident involving cattle dogs has been reported on repeatedly though, mostly because of the piss weak sentence the owner received. So is it safe, if they get discussed? Or is that breed bashing too? Or is it only breed bashing if the subject is a bull breed? Again its obvious there is a very common thread. Stay off the streets, they are not safe. "Figures for the 12 months to April revealed 88 people in our region suffered dog attack injuries. More than 50 of those were admitted to Cairns Base Hospital." "There is nothing more terrifying than a stray dog on the street because you don't know if it's going to have a go at you or the kids." "The City of Melville has dealt with 22 dog attacks so far this year. Last year, there were 100 reported dog attacks, including five in which a person was seriously injured and seven in which an animal was hurt. This was up on the 94 reported dog attacks in 2011 and 83 in 2010. Dog attacks also rose in the City of South Perth, which dealt with 51 last financial year, compared with 45 in 2010-11 and 26 in 2009-10. The City of Bayswater had 59 dog attacks last year, including 27 alleged attacks on people. The City of Vincent recorded 44 dog attacks last year - 23 on people. In the City of Mandurah, there have been 48 dog attacks this year, including four where people were injured. "
  18. The trouble with the tight ball theory is the majory of people that die before the ambulance arrives is an artery in either the neck, arm or leg bleeds out before help arrives all of which when down on the ground are within easy reach, regardless of the breed they upset.
  19. American Staffordshire Terrier BACKGROUND The American Staffordshire Terrier is not a new breed. Although it gained American Kennel Club registration and recognition in 1936, it has been developed since the early 1800s as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed that country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead and for general companionship. A number of the early ancestors were also developed for the "sport" of dog fighting. The extraordinary vitality of this breed is a direct result of breeding for successful fighting dogs. This now illegal activity is, unfortunately, more often cited as the early purpose of the dogs rather than the general farm work, and although ancestors of the American Staffordshire were fighting dogs, the selective breeding since the 1930s has been away from the fighting heritage. The American Staffordshire Terrier today is a companion and show dog. AVERAGE LIFESPAN The American Staffordshire Terrier usually lives up to nine years of age but can easily last 11 years if given plenty of loving attention and a good diet. AVERAGE SIZE & WEIGHT 44cm - 49cm 19kg - 23kg BREED PERSONALITY, CHARACTERISTICS & TEMPERAMENT The American Staffordshire Terrier is a stoic and powerful breed. It's nature tends to be courageous and training is recommended. COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PETS The American Staffordshire Terrier can, under some circumstances, show aggressive tendencies towards cats, rabbits and other household pets. With other dogs, it needs to be socialised correctly over a period of time to establish a lasting relationship. The owner of an American Staffordshire Terrier should be ever aware that it will respond to a challenge offered by another dog, and for this reason great care should be taken in the surrounds of an unfamiliar dog, especially if both are male. CARE REQUIREMENTS The American Staffordshire Terrier is a relatively low maintenance dog, requiring minimal grooming of its coat, dry shampooing or bathing only when necessary and rubbing its coat will bring out a good shine. It requires daily exercise. It will also seek and demand attention from its human family, but it will require training to become a good member of the family. A home with a fenced yard or kennel is essential. IN CONCLUSION If you have decided that the American Staffordshire Terrier is the dog for you and you are prepared to keep this animal under close supervision, contact one of the groups listed below: Somehow I suspect the meaning of the word "essential" isnt too well understood. Since this does appear to be the element missing it seems, in just about every incident that hits the headlines. Someone doesnt seem to be doing their breed homework before they get them. I spotted a similar warning in the breed description for American Bulldogs. Somehow it doesnt seem to be a priority to the owners of the dogs that end up in the headlines.
  20. Does this answer your question ? http://www.ozziedoggers.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=32605
  21. I think Ive realised the solution, well for me anyway. Stay off the streets, if you dont put yourself out there to get hurt, no headlines, no innocent breed in trouble because of you, no breed bashing. Problem solved.
  22. By standing in front of my dogs and growling is how I've stopped most dogs but not all. I did this on Christmas Day would you believe, no one around, I had 3 of my littlies on a lead in a local park when suddenly an old guy appeared with his dog and just let it off the lead. It was a very large black GSD/Kelpie type dog. It came running at 100mph towards us, ears down. I did the usual, he didn't even call his dog. The dog turned round and went back to him and because it was Christmas and the dog was still off lead - I said "can you please put your dog on the lead". At which point, he threatened me with physical violence and became menacing. Stupidly i'd left the mobile at home as who'd expect this on Christmas Day?? I told him I was calling the police and he backed off whilst I fumbled in my bag .... I was extremely lucky. This story is horrific and i'm afraid it isn't good for Staffies - can you imagine having to anaesthetise a dog to get it to let go of another dog??? Reading the descriptions of dog attacks by bull breed types, this seems to be a common thread - kicking, punching and using implements doesn't make them let go. Thats because hunting dogs are not bred to let go, they are bred to hang on, no matter what, so the prey doesnt escape. The more they are hurt the more adrelenian released and the harder they will hold. So if its a hunting bred, then the previous advice, "If the dog has grabbed your dog, beat it." isnt going to do anything but make it hang on harder. Wonder what mix of "staffie" is in the one that was so true to its genes only the letal injection got it to let go? Its only mistake was it hadnt latched onto a wild pig. Otherwise it would be a hero. Did anyone read the link about the dog stabbig? 23 times the owner of the 11 year old little terrier, had to before the attacker finally let go with its finally dying body. The reason pig dogs wear armour is so they dont get torn to pieces in their line of duty, cant pass on their excellent genes if their dead. Frankly I intend to keep off the streets myself. I have no intention of joining that poor jogger or any of the other people who put themselves in harms way. Although I am lucky, I live on acerage and if my dogs cant get enough exercise at home, tough luck.
  23. Maybe the injoured wanted to get their names in the papers? Maybe they shoved themselves and their dogs into the mouths of those poor unfortunate puppies? Maybe its about time people stoped stressing these poor dogs, kept right away from the poor things, if you see them, have a heart, keep away, stop provoking them, dont put them at risk of being villified through no fault of their own, if their owner wants them to be free to roam where they please who are you or I to be so mean as to expect to use their streets and paths when they are going about their business? Sureley its about time everyone realised the only way to protect them is to stay off their streets until they decided to go home, surely a bit of patience is all thats needed so they are safe from being upset instead of whats been happening by the up to now uncaring public. Dont know why we ever didnt realise how easy the solution is, stop setting up these poor dogs for bad press, get a concience people, stay home and off the streets, its their turf, stop being so arrogant and think you have the right to walk down their streets, then they can live their lives in peace surely?
  24. ummmmm interesting link not only to early death but agression issues as well http://www.healthy-k9.com/secure/course/breed.php?db=Dogue%20Brasileiro&gclid=CM-U69eM1rcCFUodpQoddWEAww
  25. Wonder if all these are a scam too? http://www.australialisted.com/all-states/all-categories/dogo/ I remember seeing a litter for sale add last year for ten puppies for sale, at a local supermarket tacked up on the for sale wall.
