  1. Bloody Stand for Exam ???? Head trainer gave me a video back in February and doing that increment method has been working outside of class but inclass it's a different more direct approach and Thistle breaks every time (different trainers. First one was too kids gloves but the second one I think is too confronting? ) So I'm hoping head trainer can train all of us next session quickly after class so thistle can succeed at it in class environment. Or at least explain in words I understand what we should be doing ????
  2. Aww his poor eyes. Mayhaps he will surprise you and accept the decline gracefully? Yesterday I did not enjoy obedience much, I was getting lots of conflicting instruction from 2 instructors in class and also from previous class/trainers and even other class mates (who are good trainers and privately I agree with their suggestion). I don't think I explained well the reasoning behind the gradual increments I want to do with thistle. Got myself quite worked up about it at home because I think how we are doing the one position is actually worsening her in class? Or I'm just plain upset because I don't understand what they are doing or what I'm meant to be doing. Thistld has been failing at this for months. If she was going to understand this method she'd have understood by now So I've kind of gone above to the head trainer to ask if he can observe what we are doing. Hoping I have not offended the current trainer but I think the trust between me and thistle is strained because of it and also neither of us is having fun. And I went to obedience to teach her confidence first, obedience second...

  4. Unsure if this book has been mentioned, so I will share! ""Behavior Adjustment Training 2.0: A New Philosophy and Techniques for Dealing with Fear, Frustration, and Aggression in Dogs."" I like it because it sounds like it's got super-simple explanations and illustrations to help get things sticking in my head! Also about time I started doing more stucture BAT than waffling my way along dealing with things as they happen (which has been working but I guess with people as the final hurdle, a more structured and planned out approach to help ME) Understanding BAT: Key Concepts BAT Dog Returns: Peanut's Lessons for Me Quick Fixes: Safety and Management Essentials How to See Trouble Before It Starts Leash Skills for Freedom and Safety BAT Set-ups for Reactivity Up Close and Tight Spaces: Mark and Move Troubleshooting BAT Set-Ups Surprise: Sudden Environmental Contrast BAT on Everyday Walks Love Thy Neighbor: Fence Fighting "Who Is It?" As well as that 101 dog tricks from the trick dog title people
  5. Just left it too, absolutely packed! Only one free dog toy for us, but many bags of dog treats. Won't be buying those for awhile. Lots of competitions to enter as well. I was there from 10am to 2pm. It really started getting packed after about 12. Saw a photo on instagram about 15 minutes ago and the crowd is but it was fun, lots to see and do.
  6. A challenge unlocking her secrets? ;) I look forward to reading the challenges she presents, following along the challenges (and wins!) of other dogs lives is my fave thing :D
  7. Good luck! One of my favourite dogs in my obedience classes is a whippet, he did an advanced rally this last weekend and I'm always blown away watching him work. He also does agility! And one of the few dogs to have lifetime membership. I think your little Italian grey secret has tricks up her sleeve too :) Show them your best!
  8. I like using PositiveK9Training. Classes and one-on-one house visits available.
  9. if that's the criteria, this would be somewhere around the 30th bath, not the third! I should be honest. I only did it because she rolled in one too many dead things. When my nose says it is time, it is time! XD
  10. I took advantage of the really warm day today (last warm day of Autumn? I hope so!) and gave the dog a bath (her third!)...and nail trim... And a good brushing (minimal as that is) followed by wormers, brushed teeth etc The result is a soft and shiny and pretty smelling pup! Looking forward to tonight's cuddles ❤️ Wondering what everyone else's cleaning routine is? Do you do a bit here and a bit there? All at once? All the time or once a year? Obviously the type of dog makes difference XD sometimes short hair is a blessing But then yesterday we had a lovely time with a little Maltese X and I think I could easily be converted to a small white fluffy. Dog and I both loved his soft fur! Like a little cloud ❤️ (Think I can steal him? ;) I would brush him every night! ) Obligatory bath photo:
  11. How worrying the photos in the article, some of those injuries are pretty severe! Especially on the Labrador type dog. And 3 attacks over 8 days? I had no idea there were such struggles with repeat offenders. I'm all for giving dogs second chances and training and obeying rules so I'm disturbed that the Great Dane owner isn't taking advantage of her many chances
  12. This is very sad - be warned! There are images of the injured maltese x and other dogs in the link. The injuries have been cleaned up though and the maltese survived. I would be terrified to live in that area though, looks like the lady with the aggressive great dane hasn't been obeying her dangerous dog restrictions so it keeps on attacking other dogs (unless they've only given it that label on the 5th attack?) :/ Very irresponsible! I hope she attends the obedience classes but I don't think only 6 months would fix such an issue... https://au.news.yahoo.com/a/31418475/dangerous-great-dane-could-kill-shocking-pictures-of-dog-mauling/
  13. Yeah I see they are all over the place. Having a place to put her would let me guide the visitors around in a more oganised manner instead of leaving them to flock all over the yard. It's not in the video (I think) but a few times I told them off - for staring at her or making kissy noises XD Hard habits to break. I am posting because although my dad had left, his boat broke down and needed a replacement. So I picked up the only copy of the item in melbourne then drove allllll the way down to the Peninsula. Seeing opportunity for another meet and more catching up with dad, I brought Thistle with. She barked a bit at first while we sat at the beach, but after lunch we had her walking near him - even on the lead with Dad holding it for awhile. We drove around checking out Flinders and bits of Peninsula we could go to with a dog, and she was checking him out in the car and getting chin rubs, many treats from him. (She REALLY likes the car and is much more forgiving/curious of people in it) Then when hugging goodbye Thistle involved herself and Dad got to properly pat her for the first time! Still worried, but progress! Added bonus, some exposure to things like metal stairs, fishermen, boats, kids on scooters, staying in drop at a cafe as dogs/people walk past (first time we've done this. Much easier than obedience, she did great! I think that pets market we attend helped prepare her) and dingies + motor of a dingy. The exhausted happy feelings from today will be a great buffer when she barks/growls and moves away from the trainer next week and flunks the advanced test as a result XD Tomorrow we have the monthly pets market, late in the day. I'm thinking we will keep it low key, go sit in an out of the way location and just watch people/dogs for 30 minutes. Nothing too challenging after today. Hiding behind the dog trainer stand is always good.
  14. I was going to keep mine but the dog found it first... Never even saw the cover XD I wonder if it's possible to get a replacement. The local listings are so useful :/
  15. The last dog-warmer has arrived, so here is Thistle's new pieces of winter fashion! Followed in the path of DOL's own dididog and went to D & D dog coats It is so soft and warm. Bonus! Can cover cold dog ears! Secondhand lurcher coat from a friend in the UK, funny how dogs can look nothing alike but have same measurements Rocking some warm style over there! Spontaneous purchase because it was 50% off and reversible! Two patterns for one! Handy dandy future layering opportunity. I'm thinking snow and mountains and marysville state forest and layered up after all that The sock is not part of the fashion, I accidentally quicked her quite badly and the sock is to save my floor. and some old ones I already had (some not to be taken seriously) Secondhand uk lurcher raincoat! One dog's trash is another dog's treasure! Bonus, the neck bit rolls up to the ears! The Thundercoat - Good for anxiety AND layering ;) The "I am upset and overcompensating but also don't know anything about keeping my single coat semi-hairless dog warm" jacket aka the first jacket The first jacket sequel: ugly-but-warm raincoat (haha houndstooth) The "f*** off" statement ;) The "what part of the dog is actually warm here" neck-rug ;)
  16. I'm sorry monelite but your responses do not ease my concerns and I'm not convinced the process will work. I am still thinking it is around backwards and in your haste to have more places to access the below issues are being overlooked/hand waved away as fixing themselves. 2. If it can't behave in a quiet street it's not ready for more challenging situations 3. ? On lead let alone Flexi lead are not enforced. What point is the 2n leash rules if people are not currently abiding by them and/or they're currently not enforced? 4. Yes it is, it's a safety issue. More access is more potential for dogs to get lost and I would like a higher % to be identifiable. Especially if the dog is a disturbance in the process. 5. It's a factor of responsibility, especially for areas where people property currently back up on to areas dogs are not allowed. 6. ? Not sure what you mean. I'm listing issues where ppl are currently not obeying rules as is/the rules are not enforced. Adding more rules will just set up for more failure. 7. Awareness raising and education programs would be a good start It doesn't have to be enforceable by law but it is currently an issue. You asked for items I consider issues to be overcome and I am sharing some I don't personally care if your dog can't walk on a lead. I care when it's disturbing other people/animals or you're not attempting to control it from doing such. You are wanting to increase them in shared spaces and that means respecting the other people using it too. Education and obedience can help with that. 8. And I'm saying you can't just open places up to inexperienced ppl and dogs and cross your fingers that it will help them become better. First target the above issues and similar and help them succeed where they currently are now. Then as those areas have a higher level of responsible pet owners - then you start trial runs with new areas to see how people go and adjust from what you learn there. I've no problem with dogs on public transport. There are current working examples of that around the country (including where I live) - so other places can copy off that and try rolling it out. I do think muzzle and leash is a good and safe idea for that (+the rules actually being enforced. Rules being enforced consistently would go a long way to helping owners I reckon)t. Why not start out with a petition on that for your local area rather than blanket increased access? Then it can be assessed and a test, give you a better idea of the challenges specific in your area. But opening up *everywhere* is a recipe for a backlash and I'm concerned by that. Don't get me wrong, I want to take my dog more places but I also want other owners to be as mindful as I would try to be and I don't think the overall culture is at that level yet. Set the dogs and ppl up for success in their own backyards/current allowed places then slowly increase as the population average gets better. Same as training a dog to succeed ;) you don't just throw them in everything and cross your fingers, you test them in other areas first so they don't get burnt. Anyway I'll let this go as I think soon we will be going around in circles. I just wanted to share my concerns and thoughts, hope it is helpful and gives you something to think about and plan around as you move forward with this.

  18. Please give a specific example of current issues, exclude off leash dogs in on lead areas Okay, excluding the most obvious issue that needs to be better enforced/obeyed because it comes with many sub issues like harassing other dogs, people, hidden poop, dangers to health, attacking other animals, bad recall, cars etc 1. People picking up after their dogs 2. Nuscience dogs ie constant barking/flinging self all over the place on lead/jumping on passing people/harassing other dogs 3. Appropriate Flexi lead usage 4. Consistent registration and microchipping 5. Confining dogs/not letting them wander (seperate to intentionally allowed off lead in on lead but it is part and parcel of ownership) 6. Restricted breeds/dangerous dogs. Whether you agree with these or not, you should obey the law with them in the meantime for their own safety and others 7. Obedience and training - most dogs don't seem to have it (or are too excited/scared to demonstrate it) - if they can't walk down a street they're not ready for other challenging locations, let alone should be allowed access to more challenging or fragile locations 8. Peoples overall lack of awareness of their dogs. Not their fault usually (ignorance vs lazy) but an increased sense of responsibility and respect for others in regards to Fido behaviour and locations Etc etc Majority of these are not consistently enforced by areas or obeyed by owners. So both sides need some work before increasing the areas where the issues can happen. Education and enforcement first, consistent improvement from the community before trial running new allowances. Jumping straight to more places without improving current overall responsibility in both enforcement and ownership will just be more areas with more and new issues :/
  19. Thanks Willem This one just came out so no free copies yet. However one of the scientists wrote a plain english article on the study to tide people over in the meantime Neurobiology of Self-Control in Dogs New brain imaging study shows brain region for canine impulse control. Some snippets, worth reading the whole thing for training mpulse control ideas: The science article: Neurobehavioral evidence for individual differences in canine cognitive control: an awake fMRI study
  20. I would think that first to penalise those disobeying in the areas they are currently allowed before increasing the places dogs can go. I think because if a dog is not yet ready to walk down a street politely or owners currently can not obey leash rules as is, they shouldn't be allowed to misbehave in more (challenging) places. I would turn it around so: 1. More consistent rules and penalise issues as they currently are /encourage training 2. Average owner and dogs would slowly get better/ issues decrease / pet ownership culture improve 3. Then allow access to more places 4. Deal with the new issues that occur with out the original issues in the way I think jumping straight to 3 and hoping 1 and 2 follow would backfire on everyone because our pet owning population and dogs are not ready - undo some of the issues first before letting them run on out. For national parks, I don't think dogs should be allowed at all.
  21. I have one more coat on the way then I will share them as an update for my thread. The D&D coat is absolutely lovely! So soft. She will really appreciate it when winter comes on in and after-snow events. I am just waiting on the lurcher one a friend in the uk is sending me. Then I can share all the ridiculous fashion she now has. I seem to have unintentionally gone for a blue theme XD I am envious of those with the ones small enough to make outfits out of cute socks XD she does fit my own hoodies though, leaves that bum cold
  22. Glad she's finding a home. I know some farmers with a couple for fox hunting, their tales of the adventures leave me very impressed in the big work in the little packages.
  23. Thanks Snook. I don't mind hearing all the different approaches (as I figured I was probably doing some things that didn't work but at the time so much was going on that I wasnt sure what), as guests is not a common thing so i have time to think over what I think might work better next time and try to refine what we are doing instead of reacting to her reacting. Would appreciate any behaviourists popping in to comment too. I forgot about rewarding only when quiet :/ woops! Was so focussed on her associating them with good things like chicken popcorn
