  1. We've just started up our agility 'arm' at Pro-K9. Have the 2nd group running through now. We don't insist that you be a Pro-K9 Member or do your training through us, although it seems there are things we teach in our Foundation Obedience Classes that is very handy for people to have learnt and subsequently taught their dogs as they are things that Pro-K9's Agility Instructor likes people to use as part of agility motivation in the learning phase. We do of course need people to have control of their dogs and if that is in question, yes .... obedience training is something they need to give attention to, to be able to proceed past certain levels within Agility and we do reserve the right to insist that people complete our Foundation Obedience Level if we feel it necessary. Whether you wish to train for competition, or just wish to train for fun. Both are fine and we don't discriminate . Our training is suitable for both - even if you start out thinking you only want it for fun but change your mind part way through, what you've been taught will stand you in good stead for competition training if that's what you end up choosing to do. We do train for safety - so it's not just a matter of habituation and then running up and down, over and through the obstacles. You do learn body language and how to use it and also about contact training - ie you learn the finer points to agility training. This especially sets up for when you are beginning to link obstacles together and your dog is running freer but relying on some direction. I especially began the agility component because of the enhancement it provides to the handler/dog relationship. And of course this has a benefit to obedience as well. At the moment our agility beginner levels are run on Sundays. But we do envisage training the higher levels on a weekday/s evening/ at our flood lit grounds in Lyndhurst. And potentially will run most of our agility classes in the evenings during the hotter months of the year. We're in South East suburbs Melbourne - I don't know if that is convenient to you but feel free to email me. My website link is in my signature below.
  2. That's because you skipped an important training phase. First teach the dog the stim is about the barking - not about other things/people/dogs in the environment. It's not just about slapping an anti-bark collar on the dog and letting it work it out for itself. Sometimes they do - but as you found out, sometimes it can go wrong. That's why Victorian law dictates Trainer supervision as one of the two conditions of permitted use for electronic stim collars. The other one is that you need to obtain a letter from a Vet, confirming your dog's health is suitable for electronic collar use.
  3. LOL - and you're not supposed to think of it that way!! The dog's not sneaky. Think of it more along the lines of someone not being smart enough to work the dog out . That's what I do when I have a dog in for B&T that doesn't seem to be 'getting it'.
  4. Not necessarily. Whilst it can be an advantage to see the behaviour occurring, it doesn't mean a good behaviourist can't glean an understanding of it without seeing it. And there are many times where I have picked up on the smallest of body postures/language that owners haven't or don't pick up, that tells me a story without needing to see the full blown behaviour. Apart from which, the behaviourist should be able to assess your relationship with your dog (from your dog's point of view, rather than yours) and tweak anything that might or can be tweaked. Even dealing with things that to the naked eye are not apparently directly related to the behaviour you describe can make a difference and help. Thing is, if you don't expect a behaviourist to be able to help you because the behaviourist isn't likely to see the behaviour, what are you expecting to achieve by doing it via the internet, where observation is completely ruled out?
  5. Eeeeeeeewwwww. Human germies on dog's tongue.
  6. How do you know? When you were happy with her response to the occasional man in a hoodie, you wouldn't have foreseen it to escalating to what it is now (or you would have done something about it back then). So now you think she is "all bluff" and "wouldn't hurt anyone". But it is from this level that the behaviour can spring board. Just like it did from the "occasional man in a hoodie" to a broader range of people and a higher frequency. IMO you should have someone out to help you. Please don't toy with this by trying to train over the internet. This is where the behaviours that land dogs and people in really deep poo, begin. It is worth getting some professional tuition and guidance now - whilst the behaviour is not as bad as it can get and before it gets worse.
  7. We started doing the 3 year protocol 12months ago with annual vaccines. We also have the Nobivac Triennial to keep boarding kennels and training clubs etc happy. We also titre test. Since taking over the clinic 12months ago and changing the protocol, we have seen more people than the previous vet. We average a new client every day. People are recommending us all over the place. I believe it's because our vet is so open and honest with our clients and treat them as individuals and help the client decide for themselves. Many of our clients go boarding so still need to come in for yearly Kennel Cough shots anyway. The thing is with the vaccines, is if they have seroconverted, no amount of vaccines is going to increase their immunity. They either have the memory cells or they don't. If you titre test a dog that's lived inside all it's life, its levels will likely be low. But that doesn't mean it needs another vacc - it just means the body hasn't been challenged recently so there are no antibodies circulating. I don't understand why, if you're dogs have been titre testing and their levels are high, why you'd still vacc every year? My boy is 3yo and hasn't been vaccinated since he was 16wks old. My boss is more than happy to NOT vaccinate him, knowing the potential risks for him in terms of immune mediated diseases, because of his already crapola immune system (allergies). I love you Stormie . You should come down here. I'm tired of being treated by many Vets as though I'm stupid, wouldn't have a clue that what they tell me isn't necessarily gospel and treated as though I'm stupid. And yes - it is about time Vets started EDUCATING instead of dictating. ETA: And did I say that I was tired of being treated by Vets as though I was stupid? LOL
  8. Hhhhmmmm. You don't think Buddy isn't actually the smarter cookie in the cookie jar and just has you struggling/working harder to work out a solution?
  9. I find this a constant source of confusion these days, when conversing about it. Wish they'd put a proper name to the vaccine that has especially been manufactured as a 3-yearly vaccine. Or have they, and I just don't know of it? In the meantime, maybe we could all refer to it as the REAL 3-yearly vaccine, or something??? As for what I'd do in the circumstance you suggest, Malsrock. I think I'd go for a titre test. If the titre shows antibodies then I'd have some peace of mind that there is cover there and I would not re-vaccinate. If it didn't, then I'd most likely give consideration to the fact that the 'cover' is in cell memory (I'm sure I'm wording all of this wrong). Then I'd check around the area I was in and/or going to as far as the 3 core diseases are concerned. And THEN I think I'd make my decision as to whether to re-vaccinate. I'd be doing all that I could to satisfy my mind that I did NOT need to re-vaccinate. The alternative is that you could give the booster and titre 2 weeks later to ensure that you have sero-conversion. Then not re-vaccinate the dog after that. LOL ...... OR you could titre and if it didn't show anything, re-vaccinate, titre after 2 weeks to ensure sero-conversion and then not re-vaccinate after that. That's just me and my thought pattern. ETA: Re-reading, I think I've made your choices more confusing than ever!!
  10. This may be the wrong place to post this - likely as not, it is. But someone feel free to tell me and then copy/paste to the right section of DOL. I have had emailed to me a flier announcing the availability of a DDR - EAST GERMAN SHEPHERD Bloodline Chart. An intro to the flier goes ... "Each Dog Has Its Own Titles and Kör Ratings. Only after many months of remastering each and every photo and negotiating with Australia’s finest printers are we happy to present this beautifully illustrated full colour A-1 (poster size) laminated bloodline chart for your research and pleasure. Better Knowledge = Better Breeding. With this bloodline chart you can now trace your dogs ancestry back to the most influential East German Shepherds and FINALLY - Know Your Dog. ... " If anyone is interested in purchasing or knowing more about this Bloodline Chart, please let me know your email address and I'll send it on to you. This Bloodline Chart has nothing to do with me - ie I have no vested interest in it.
  11. I've only just got in and opened my emails to see I received a copy as well. I've written back via the sender to let them know I thought it was a great letter and to be honest, went that extra step further than I thought they might. So . I actually requested if it was ok to post it up on DOL as I thought it might help to restore a bit of faith lost in the GSDCA, as it did for me. But I see others here have thought just as well of it as I have and that the letter has already been posted here. GSDCA. Good letter.
  12. Sounds like a Grand Mal. They are hugely scarey to watch - that I know. There isn't much you can do during a seizure, K9Angel, save to make sure that there is nothing your dog can hurt himself on while it is happening. Whitey would be "acting strange" because he's in the after phase of the seizure. It's kind of as though they are conscious, but they're in some other nether world with a time warp of sorts. It lasts for a while. My girl's would last for at least half hour to an hour, then she would fall into an exhausted heap and sleep deeply. Seizure activity causes your dog's core temperature to rise. As far as I know it, the longer the seizure, the higher the temperature. I think that's the dangerous part - but I'm not sure, so I'll leave that to someone else here who understands the veterinary/medical/technical side of things better than I. But the rise in Whitey's temperature would be why he is panting. My girl, who normally hated the cold or any hint of it, would take herself outside and lay on her beanbags on the verandah after the "after phase" of a seizure had started wearing off. And this would be in the early hours of a frigid cold morning. I used to sit with her for a while but when I could no longer, I left her be with a blanket to stop her from freezing over, and the front door open for her to return inside if she wished. Her bean bag where she then slept deeply was under my bedroom window, so I could hear her if I needed to. Kal also frothed, urinated and lost bowel control. This part of a seizure - especially the larger ones - is normal. One of the things I learnt from my experiences with Kal's seizures was to not try to force them to stop doing what they seem to 'need' to do, but just to let them play it out. Just keep an eye to make sure they are safe from physical harm. Keeping things quiet and darkened is good. ETA: for you. Stay strong and calm for Whitey.
  13. And stop saying the command until you've got this happening regularly and you know that it will occur. Otherwise "line out" will come to mean nothing to your dog.
  14. No - but it means another org could apply for FCI membership.
  15. I'm thinking the same. And if ANKC is considering their FCI membership (ie to abandon it) then I would think that is pretty indicative that it is still quite strongly erring towards removal of Working Titles from pedigrees.
  16. Never had that occur to me, Cramet. Not with the HS brand. I've only had this happen with the "fur-saver" checks, and sometimes the cheap quality chains. Is it a Herm Sprenger that you use?
  17. This is what I received, Star .... Same as you but clearer, by degrees. What is presently "under consideration" is what I don't know. Are they considering upgrading to FULL Membership, or are they considering dumping their Membership all together? Hhhhmmmm ETA: Sorry Star. Pretty much wrote what you wrote. In previous post, you mention the ANKC meeting is in November. Was that a mistake? I thought the meeting was October.
  18. Oh Lord. I told you the reason. It was MIDNIGHT. I needed to get the letters done then so I could get them out today. I was only after an address, for heavens sake. Speaking of which, I'm off to post them on my way to a job. This is not directed to Tapferhund ...... What is the deadline date for ANKC to receive objections by, for them to be read and noted in time for their October meeting? It might have been said here, but I've been out for the bigger chunks of days and have potentially missed the post. Or maybe it hasn't been said ???
  19. Dogs can't lick their own chin That's the whole point. Put it somewhere else so they can lick rather than where you want it left on. It's worked for me - sometimes.
  20. Now THAT really makes me laugh, Tapferhund. Oh - and btw. Have a look Tapferhund. I posted in this thread before you. Don't flatter yourself to think that I only post because I have any interest in you. So what happened? :D ..... Tapferhund. :D I am a bit gobsmacked by what you've written. Not what I think at all - I don't really care whether you are "kicked off" ("kicked off" what .... DOL? I don't know what you're talking about - you're not making any sense ..... at least, not to me - perhaps others will recognise it.). You're not that much of a worry to me. But you are sounding paranoid. Is this why you dog (pun unintended) my posts? And now you're talking about knives??? And "hidden agendas"? I've always been open about my 'agendas', so again, I don't know what planet you stepped out on. I really am guffawed by your astounding revelations here, Tapferhund. Relax. I don't care where you are nor whether you stay or not. Would be nice if you weren't so unpleasant towards me though.
  21. Letter sent by email from here to : ANKC DogsVic Sending CC to FCI tomorrow (by email) Hard copies going out to ANKC and DogsVic tomorrow.
  22. And my crime is?????? .... You're spending quite a bit of time het up about the fact that I have not driven down to KCC Park to ask them for the ANKC address but have instead asked if anyone here knows it. I suspect you do, Tapferhund. But I don't expect you would share it to help out. That doesn't seem to be your style. But as I've already told you, I've gleaned the address from the listing on the FCI Website. I think it is time for your nanny nap now .
  23. at the above. You write offensively Tapferhund. It is as simple as that. And you direct your offensiveness towards me most of the time. In fact, I'd prefer it if you didn't even respond to any of my general posts. Would be nicer for me. But hey. It's a free Country. I can't stop you doing what you want to do or how you want to address people (me inclusive). I guess it floats your boat. Whatever.
  24. But as is often the case, you do and are . I already googled the ANKC address it is not available from its website. I flipped through a couple of the VicDog magazine editions to see if it might be listed there. Couldn't find it (glancing through). But I did just glean it from the FCI website. I hope it is a current one. If I had so much time as to be making trips (regardless of proximity to All Breeds Boarding Kennels where I train - not that I am ONLY at that venue ) during the day, I wouldn't need to be up at midnight trying to get these things done. Get over yourself, Tapferhund. So big deal that I don't know or remember names at DogsVic.
