  1. The website doesnt list suppliers. Any idea where it can be purchased?
  2. Epi-soothe is the only one that really does 'soothe' in my experience. The Fido's one was the least effective of the three.
  3. Wow - what fantastic achievements from everyone! (and a special congrats to Poodlefan and FHR ) We are not at trialling level yet, but still : Peebs: went from level 1 to level 3 agility training (where we've been for 6 months ) Nessie: Passed intermediate obedience in a 'private' test held for her without any pesky strangers . She has started agility now. My highlight for her this year is seeing the joy on her face when we go to agility class (as opposed to the fear when we went to obedience) Blossom: Well what can I say ... we repeated PUPPY class :p (probably the first time in the club's history) but by the time we got to beginners all her 'small dog' issues were gone . She's my shining star in obedience, and she loves it too. Her focus is great, and she manages to make me laugh even during boring stays For next year: Peebs and I will be LEARNING TO WEAVE if it kills me ;) Nessie will continue in level 1 agility training for as long as it takes. I dont really expect her to get to level 2. Blossom still havent decided. Probably Advanced and transition obedience ... then who knows - it depends what she likes once we get to that stage. I had planned to take her through agility - she has the spunk and probably the desire, but maybe not the physical ability.
  4. No cicada's around my area this year, but several years ago they were *everywhere*. You couldnt move without stepping on one. And the canine and feline crunchies made me . The lovely kitties used to bring them to me in the night, in various stages of being eaten, from not eaten at all and still fluttering about to just one wing and some slimy stuff left. Boy I'm glad it will be 5ish years till the next uprising!
  5. Kitties love them too. Crunch Crunch. :D
  6. What does this do Arolf? (in terms of stopping the tear staining)
  7. Slippery Elm 'recipes': To give internally, mix about 1/4 teaspoon of Slippery Elm bark powder with cold water for every 10 pounds (4.5kg) of body weight. For very small dogs, it is fine to use the same 1/4 teaspoon dose. The bulk powder may be very fluffy, so pack it down as much as possible to measure it. Author Anitra Frazier gives the following recipe for Slippery Elm Bark syrup in her book, The New Natural Cat, which applies equally well to our canine companions when adjusted for weight: Into a small saucepan place 1/2 cup cold water and 1 teaspoon powdered slippery elm bark. Whip with a fork. Bring to simmer over low flame, stirring constantly. Simmer 1 or 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Cool and refrigerate. Keeps 7 or 8 days. Give a teaspoon of syrup (5 cc) for an average-size cat (again, about 10 pounds (4.5kg) ) 5 minutes before a meal to minimize diarrhea, or to soothe and heal mouth ulcers. Juliette de Bairacli Levy 'Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and the Cat', slippery elm - the dose for a puppy is roughly a heaped teaspoon mixed in hottish water, you can add some natural honey to make it more palatable, and cool down. You will need to give at least twice a day for at least 3 days. You may also want to think about adding some finely chopped parsley to the puppy's meals it may help with digestion and soothe the stomach
  8. Satin Balls Recipe's (for putting weight on dogs) From Norskgra: 500g ground beef (one with plenty of fat in it) 250g pkg cream cheese 1 jar all natural peanut butter 1 jar (smaller of the sizes) wheat germ 1 doz egg yolks 1 cup or so of flaked oats soaked in heavy cream Mix up, form balls, freeze, feed as treats or food supplement. from Cala 5kg Cheap hamburger meat {high fat content} Lg box of Sustain Cereal Lg box of uncooked oatmeal 1 jar of Wheat Germ 1 1/4 cup of veg oil 1 1/4 cup of unflavored molasses 10 eggs 10 pks of unflavored gelatin Garlic to Taste 1 cup of flaxseed...ground up. 2 scoops of Source/Kelp Take all dry ingredients and place in a bowl. I crunch up the Sustainl while still in the box, and then pour all the other dry ingredients over it In a another large bowl put the hamburger meat and the wet ingredients. Mix each bowl well, then half each so that it is easier to mix. Mix just like you would a meatloaf I then take it raw, and place in freezer bags and put in the freezer, thaw out a bag as needed. feed raw. I use this not only as a quick weight gain, but as a everyday supplement for my dogs this recipe has been tested and analyzed by several universities and was found to be a total canine diet a dog could live on this without added kibble or any other supplements...this was before I added the Garlic and the Flaxseed and Kelp I have long hair black dogs, and this recipe really keeps their coat black/soft/long since I have...the past 6 months I have had no vet bills...and my dogs coats are wonderful, you need to watch how much you feed it will put weight on a slim dog in a matter of a few days. It will also make an easy keeper fat in just a short period of time. Try it, your dogs will love it!!! One other thing, I have just started to add Kelp to it also, just for the added Iodine, may be good for those dogs that have a lower normal thyroid function. You can make this recipe in what ever amount you need/want by just halving the recipe down to what you want. from WithEverythingIAm 5kg hamburger mince or Chicken Pet Mince 1 box of Sustain or Just Right-Just Grains 500g Oatmeal #1 cup of Wheat Germ 1 1/4 cup vegetable oil #1 1/4 cup of Un-flavored Molasses 10 raw eggs + eggshells 100g of Un-flavored Gelatine #1 cup of flax seed* 6tsp Powdered Kelp* 3tsp Crushed Garlic* 3tsp Apple Cidar Vinegar* Add all dry foods together - mix. in another Larger bowl (I bought a HUGE Bucket/Basket thing from The Warehouse - $8), mix all wet foods together including crushed up eggshells. Add Dry foods into the wet container (this is where it gets messy), and mix with fingers. Make into balls, and devide into bags.
  9. I thought I'd start a thread for all those general bits of information that are good to have handy (like which spot-ons cover which parasites, the recipe for 'Satin balls', what to do when your dog is stung by a bee, symptoms of tick paralysis, etc etc) - prompted by me always hunting for this info Going to see if Troy will make it a sticky First topic is ..... drumroll .... Frontline V Advantix V Advantage V Advocate This is a run down of what each one (spot on treatments) covers: DOGS Frontline Plus - fleas and ticks Advantix - fleas, ticks and mosquitos Advocate- fleas, heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm, lice and ear mites Revolution - fleas, heartworm, ear mites, hookworm, sarcoptic mange Advantage - fleas CATS Advocate - heartworm, fleas, ear mites, hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, lice. 10. Scissoring legs and muzzles (beards), and around eyes. My dogs are all pretty small 4-7kg so I dont want to get anything too big, but want them big enough to do legs without having to chop, chop, chop (like I do now with the teeny $5 detail scissors I use for everything )
  11. Another question is the size, ie 10inches, the blade size? I found an older thread about scissors, and Poodlefan mentioned 10" scissors - this would be bigger than my hedge trimmers if it is the blade size
  12. The WAHL ones that I found (the 'Italian series, Ice tempered' ones) said they are "Catch cut with finely serrated edge". Wouldnt the serrated edge mean that they cant be sharpened? http://www.petnetwork.com.au/cgi-bin/shopp...;cart_id=440856
  13. I want to get a set of straight and curved scissors for grooming, and want them to work (duh!) and be able to be sharpened if (when) they get blunt. Any ideas on what brand/type to get?
  14. Blossom used to do this (still does :D ). I use the 'screaming wounded person technique' (ie scream in pain like a sibling puppy would). I also used the 'this can work for me too' technique and built on it to teach her a trick. Now when I say 'take my socks off' she duly does just that with great enthusiasm and gets a treat at the end. But she doesnt get a treat unless she is *asked * to do it. I'd definately be getting her to stop it asap. I know someone with holes in all of her pants and her dog is now over 6
  15. I didn't know this either. Next time I go in I can ask for something for the dog, and something for me to take away the headache the dog has given me .
  16. Noooo :D My vet had to arrange with a particular chemist to give out medication for a dog, and my vet also had to write a script (in my name) for me to take to that chemist. I'm assuming that the pharmacist did a bit of looking at options between the time he gave the price and when I went in, because I got more tablets for less money (so yes, brand substitution). Mind you, with the amount of crap email I get every day, I probably could have ordered several tonnes of Prozac AND viagra over the net for only a few dollars .
  17. The chemist ended up giving me a different brand which cost $28 for 28 tablets, so it turned out to be even cheaper. SAS: One site that I read about treating with anti-depressants, said that the medication wont help if the dog is carrying out the behaviours because he wants to (as opposed to because he is having an abnormal reaction to stimuli). Also, there are many different types of SSRI's, and just as with people, you may have to try the dog on several before you find which one works.
  18. OK, I've heard back from the vet. Non PBS fee is $33, which is only marginally more that the PBS cost for those without a health care card. This is for 20 tabs which will last either 80 or 40 days depending on how he goes with the lower dose.
  19. Different things. Clomicalm is commonly used for compulsive behaviour disorders, anxiety - I dont know what else. Prozac (ie the seratonin reuptake inhibitor family of anti-depressants) is used where the dog has aggression problems (Clomicalm is contra-indicated for agression problems (ie it can make the aggression worse)) and also for anxiety, etc. Clomicalm is also the only one that is approved (tested) for animal use.
  20. Bumping ... anyone? (still waiting to hear back from the vet ;))
  21. glad to hear that he seems to be OK ;) You can relax tonight with some teabags of your own
  22. Does anyone know the approximate cost of prozac when prescribed for dogs? My vet is looking in to it, but I thought I'd save her the trouble if it turns out to be so expensive that I couldnt afford it anyway.
