  1. Someone told me when I picked up my puppy that for most dogs, the day they leave their mum is the worst day of their life. Your little one is just missing her mum and her littermates. She will settle, for now don't fuss over her too much, make her crate nice and safe for her (sounds like you are already doing well there- maybe along with the hot water bottle put a ticking clock in there to replicate mums heartbeat?), just make sure she has a nice full tummy, doesn't need to toilet and leave her be and wait for the sleepless nights toilet training! She will be fine in a few days. She is beautiful- do you have any more photos? the cross is a bit strange, I can't figure out physically how the mating would occur!
  2. poor things What is flyblown? You guys put up with alot
  3. Erny, I haven't been posting but have been following. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. :D RIP Kal.
  4. We will definetely be there, is a whippet too big for lure racing?

    Zac Attack

So sorry Ish, Run free Zac
  6. I know it has been said enough, but yep, bee sting. Same thing happened to my girl a few months ago- ever seen a whippet come sharpei? Luckily it went down quickly, but it will be worse every time.
  7. I accidentally trained to toilet on command when I was house training because everytime i put him outside i would say the word, then when he went I would make a huge fuss saying the word and 'good boy', now he sort of knows. If I had have known I could use it I would have picked a better word though- last night I was at the park, got him out of the car and onto the grass and was saying 'wee wee zig, good boy, wee wee' while a pack of footballers ran past training ;)
  8. Thinking of you and your family Stella.
  9. Shek- mine does everything- they have a seperate door and waiting room for the greys and the other dogs and fluffy animals, birds etc go in another room. First time I went in there was a cat, a guinea pig and a JRT waiting
  10. I use the greyhound vet- Just under $30 (with the greyhound discount) for my grey, I'm pretty sure they don't charge more than $35 for all other breeds. I don't know exactly- cost me $34 all up for a C5, frontline treatment, big tin of advance food and 2 worming tabs. I wish I had have known when I got my whippie done, hers was $65 for the vacc alone at the chain store type vet

    Puppy Sleeping

Grab a puppy kong- they won't be able to rip bits off and they are softer for puppy teeth. Once they are older upgrade to an adult one Squeaky toys are always good, I get mine from the reject shop. Just make sure you only get them out for play time because my dogs ted to rip bits off them if I leave them out. Pigs trotters are good, last longer than ears and take a bit more work. Chicken frames keep them occupied for quite a while too.

    Puppy Sleeping

Let them sleep as long as they want- its good for you and they grow while they sleep. I got my greyhound pup at 6 weeks (rescue situation) and he was only awake for about 3 hours a day in half hour blocks for the first 2 weeks. What you are planning on feeding sounds good- if you do a search on BARF here you will find alot of info on a raw diet. Like shoemonster said, bash it first while they are still young- I started giving them as is at about 10 weeks, but by that time he was gutsing them so I switched to wings. As for your second question, jus monitor their play and if it gets too rough, clap or distract them with a calmer game of fetch or a pigs ear or kong each to chew. Once they get older and their adult teeth come through a nice big tug toy will keep them amused and playing nicely for a while. At the moment they are still babies, so when they have had their needles start taking them out and socialising them- when they meet lots of other dogs, older and younger, bigger and smaller, they will start to learn the acceptable types of play. They will always probably be rougher with each other but at the moment they haven't learnt what is too rough.
  13. Forgot to add- while s/he is still a pup, it is a good idea to block off some of the crate so they can't pee in one corner and sleep in the other
  14. I would get a medium- I have a large for my female whippet which according to the breed standard is about 6cm average taller than a miniature schnauzer, and I like to have room for them to stetch out so I get slightly larger than what is recommended. According to the rudducks site, medium is suitable for cocker spaniels and beagles (76x54x61): http://www.rudducks.com.au/pdf/Dog/Port-A-Home & Port-A-Pen.pdf
  15. It helped me- the lady selling tickets said to try and get Coco psyched by watching other dogs run to get the idea since it was her first time. She wasn't interested until Caber went in there and got her attention
  16. Awww but Caber is soo cute! The entertainment value before he gets in is great, but then the sounds that come out of his mouth once he gets up to a certain speed after the lure :D Would love to meet the grey though :D I am an evil dogmum, I get all mine desexed ASAP- I was petrified Coco was going to come on heat
  17. Spikespuppy- I'll bring Ziggy if I can convince someone to come to hold onto him for me! If he does come it will be his last outing entire, he will be getting his manhood removed sometime during the week after *evil laugh* I don't know if he will be old enough for a run, at the moment he is too clumsy to run a straight line
  18. Yay! :D I'll be there with Coco and maybe Ziggy if he is behaving by then! Spikespuppy- Can't wait to see Iko run again, he was great. And Cabers little tanty as he waits his turn
  19. canned food is about 85% water, and I'm no expert but 3.1kg at 8 weeks seems a little light? Lab people? I'd switch to a good quality dry food soaked. you are feeding him 3 times a day?
  20. The whippet 5 phone chargers 2 computer charger cords 1 hair straightener about 11 shoes a cat scratch pole ripped up the corner of the couch 2 doormats 1 dog bed 5 blankets shredded 1 telephone book 1 novel 2 brooms 1 mop several water bowls Luckily she isn't into clothes Grey pup Helped with one shoe and a broom 1 potplant I think we learnt our lesson with the whippet.
  21. There is an ignore button Vivien. I suggest you use it if you think kaywoman is as 'hateful' as you say. Please also consider the fact that after a few days in a wire cage in very stressful surroundings Ginger may handle it differently than you expect, especially after being poked and prodded in vet checks and temp testing. My dog is always being cuddled and loved on the street, she has been heavily socialised and is extremely friendly. However if she was somehow hurt and ended up in a cage, with strangers trying to handle her, I know she would be shy and withdrawn and nervous. I don't know if she would bite because she has never been in that situation- regardless of that she would probably fail. You can't predict what she will do when she hasn't been in that situation.
  22. Vivien- I think kaywoman68 is just concerned and not trying to offend you. Anyone who has had one puppy knows how hard it is in the first few weeks/months, let alone having two puppies to work with, not to mention 3 young dogs if Ginger returns (and I am sincerely hoping she does) I think the first thing you have to work with is making them happy to be seperated. I agree that the crating may not work in your circumstances. I think the best way to do it is to make sure both of them are having fun with humans seperately. How old are they? When you start lead training, maybe you can take one for a walk and have your OH stay home with the other and pay special attention to it- playing/treats etc. Split them up, only for 5-10 minutes at first and then longer, just making the individual time special so they learn that being apart is not a bad thing. Ignore whinging, let them know it won't get them attention (in the case that one is shut off somewhere) I think for now, besides the basic sit, I would be working on keeping them happy when seperated. When you have achieved this, then you don't have to worry about the sooking and can train them seperately for longer with more advanced things.
  23. It is difficult when you have 2 pups as they get very attached to each other rather than you. May I ask why you decided to get 2 pups at the same time? You have to spend time with them individually, and seperate them occassionally so they learn to be alone- at first for short periods then lengthening. While you are working with one, leave the other with a kong or pigs ear or even a chicken wing, whatever they like and will keep them distracted, then swap. You can even feed on their lunch in the laundry and train the other one, then swap. Once they are both doing whatever you teach them alone reliably, they will do it together however when teaching new things it will be a while before you can teach together. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon
