Beward Of Pups Who Dont' Drink Enough!

Hi all.

I am a new user and the proud owner of 2 six month of staffy pups. Our girl became quite sick after we got her and the vets could not work out what was wrong. she underwent all sorts of test and had them completely puzzled.

They finally worked out that she suffers from a rare puppy disorder which causes her not to drink water. We had pointed this out to vet on several occasions but they thought little of it. She was displaying a limp, runny nose, puffy eyes and a cough. Because she wan't drinking any fluids the sodium levels in her body were dangerously high and she was being poisoned. She is on the road to recovery now as we add water to all of her meals and give her plenty of milk diluted with water.

Just thought it would be worth sharing this info with others. If you notice that your pup isn't drinking and is displaying signs of illness - please talk to your vet!!!

Thanks to everyone who has listed toilet training advice. We are still struggling but the advice provided has been invaluable!

Apparently they don't really know enough about it although they think that it isn't hereditary. There are 4 vets at our surgery and it took them 3 weeks or so to sort it out with the help of a pathologist and they said that on their vet's forum there was only 2 mentions of it listed. There is a specialist in Adelaide who deals with this sort of thing and we are going to see him in a couple of months after observing how Neko is getting on - as she 'may' grow out of it. I have the name at home and will hunt it out so others can search the web for it.

Aside from the limp, it sounds remarkably like a simple dose of Kennel Cough... which wiol also cause pups to stop eating and possibly drinking if they feel bad enough.... which in turn leads to dehydration... increase in sodium levels as well as putting other levels outta whack.

Please post the name of the condition.. would love to read up about it!

Hi - Yes, very similar. They initially thought it was kennel cough and possibly even distemper due to her runny nose. They also thought it was a problem with her kidneys too... to be honest, .

Will definitely have the name tomorrow.

The name of the condition is Primary Hypodipsia.

Hypodipsia means lack of thirst (for a number of reasons). It probably means that the mechanism that makes the dog thirsty is faulty.

Hypernatraemia is the condition that made her sick (sodium too concentrated in the blood) which happened because she didn't drink.

I have been involved with 1 dog with this condition & it got worse & worse until it was PTs.Maybe about 10 yrs ago.

We boarded & groomed this dog.With grooming the session had to take time as the dog got very tired quickly & tongue would turn blue,they could also be very active but with them not drinking you had to skin fold checks & keep the fuild supplement up constantly & then ensure they where also peeing

The dog litterly will not drink even if 40 degrees.It is very different response to not just wanting to drink they litterly have no clue that they need to drink,they still eat well but any form of fluid is like it doesnt exist.

This dog was constantly feed small meals with fuild in it which often resulted in runny poos.He was also syringed hydrating fluids .

The dog through time ended up with other issues .

It is very rare

Oh dear. Neko has controlled amounts of water added to each meal (60mls for each 1kg) which she laps up happily and seems to be doing well although we have no clue how it will affect her in later life. There is a specialist in Adelaide who we are planning to see in the next couple of months.
