vpeewee Posted August 2, 2007 Share Posted August 2, 2007 Hi All, We took our 10 month old Giant Schnauzer to his first obeidence training last night and it went really well. He has never been to nay kind of formal training before and wasn't very socialised so even though weh ad tought him the basics (sit, drop etc) I was a bit worried about how he would go. He was excellent! With so many dogs around I was really happy with how he went, he still listened to me and did the 'sits' and 'drops' perfectly. He met a couple of other dogs (got a bit excited then) and he was the most 'vocal' in the class but even when he was barking he was just lying on the ground so it wasn't threatening or anything. Just had to share how happy I was (and proud of him ) Although, we have found out that we have a lazy dog. Every time we stopped he just wanted to lie down. Sometimes I would tell him to sit and he would but then slide down into the laying position. I wasn't reallly that worried though, he is a big dog and if he wants to lay down its fine with me! Poodle wrangler Posted August 2, 2007 Share Posted August 2, 2007 . He was probably tired . Perfect time for teaching stays and drops when the dog's tired, says out instructor. My pup's about 8 months and is exhausted after training. Where's a piccie? My dog's best mate at training is a mini schnauzer called Jerry . You don't see many giants around. You just click and drag photos to upload. http://www.flock.com/photobucket/start/ When you want to post a pic, you open the pic, copy the bit below "IMG Code - Forums & Bulletin Boards". Back on DOL, you click on the "insert image icon" - 2 to the right of the smiley face above this post- and click paste. When you preview, the photo comes up. Hope that helps. He was amazing, a wonderful dog, but definately very full of beans!!! A great dog for the kids, they all grew up together and the kids got flattened pretty often whilst learning to walk!! We had our first obedience class last weekend (5 month old Australian Shepherd) at the local community dog obedience club, and although it was just a run through of the very basics (walking to heel, sit at heel, stand at heel) and we were in the "first timers" class, we both enjoyed it. This weekend we go to puppy class, then once he's 6 months old we go to beginners. He can already sit, drop, roll over, shake hands and fetch, but doing it in the company of other dogs and people is very different to doing it at home with me. I was very happy about being shown how to get him to walk to heel on a loose leash and we've been practising all week and now he can do it! My boy lays down on the job too. I have taught him to sit at the kerb before we cross the road and if there's traffic coming, he gives a big sigh and settles down stretched out on the grass to wait! LOL!
