Teaching Children Dog Etiquette

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My SIL is looking at buying a puppy.

She is wondering if there is a good book or DVD explaining dog body language aimed at children. The kids have never owned a dog before and I know she wants to make sure they try to understand pack etiquette.

Her four kids are 3 to 12 years, so a wide age range!

Thanks.

Hi Daxilly,

I don't know if I am allowed to do this but there is a fantastic website called K9 Events. It is an Australian based website and is chock full of information. You will find some terrific articles on kids and dogs and also I am sure that a couple of very knowledgable folk in Melbourne put a booklet together about the topic as well. You will find that on the website too. Not sure if I can mention names etc. Anyways, go and have a look and you will come up with more information than you dreamed of!!

I hope this helps

Cheerio

There is a book called Training Ralph, I haven't seen it but is written as a story and does cover body language etc - see this link http://www.k9events.com/Aunty_Kaye's_Books.htm

Also Kintala make a book Kids & Dogs which is more suited to your older child, lots of information there - http://www.kintala.com.au/books.htm - I have also seen this book in bookstores so you might be able to get one locally

This book is written by an Australian autor and deals with how to approach dogs:

"Can I Pat That Dog?"

A non-fiction picture book that aims to teach children how to behave safely around dogs and thereby hopefully reduce the risk of being bitten.

'Learning how and under what circumstances to approach a dog are vital lessons for your child. It can mean the difference between a lifelong love of animals or a lifelong fear. This book provides children with an excellent introduction to understanding dog behaviour' - Dr Hugh J Wirth, AM, KSJ, BVSc (Melb), FAVA - Veterinarian and President, RSPCA Australia

The text takes children through a series of situations in which it would be inadvisable to pat a dog, and then teaches them how to pat a dog correctly and how to deal with situations in which dogs can get out of control.

Ages 4-8

I have seen it for sale in Big W here in SA as well as Angus and Robertson.
