My Dog Doesn't Want To Walk

I tried to take one of my 8 week old JRTs for her first walk today. She has no trouble with the lead but as soon as we got into the front yard she lay down on her belly and didn't want to go any further. I tried picking her up and carrying her out down the street a bit but as soon as I put her down she dropped to her belly again. Is this usual and how do I overcome it?

I thought that might be a problem with my pom, so instead I put his collar and lead on and carried him to the local park (no other dogs about). Then I set him down in the middle of the park and let him mosey along on the lead. It worked well. I also tried to teach him to respect the collar a bit. When he didn't want to come along I would give a pulling tug on the collar and then release, and small ones too, trying to keep the lead loose and help him grasp what as wanted. He screeched the first couple of times he was 'woman handled' :) but he got it really quick and now he will walk along nicely.

I would not be taking any 8 week old baby puppy out for walks in the street, she is too young. Parvo is rife at this time of the year and your pup would have had only one vaccination.

Walk the pup around your own property where she is safe.

She's actually had two vaccinations. I did ask somewhere else if 8 weeks was old enough and the response was that was fine but I'll wait a little while longer, at least til she's had her third vaccination.

Why has she had two vaccinations by age 8 weeks!?

Well actually they're about nine weeks old. They had their 2nd vaccinations a couple of days before I got them.

Where did you get these pups? Did they come with a vaccination certificate?

Edit: as has been stated, 8 week old pups do NOT need to be taken for walks. Apart from the risks of parvo, natural play in their own yard is plenty of exercise.

Yes they did come with a vaccination certificate. They are due for their third one on the 28th of Jan.

So what type of vacc did they have, and at what ages? Just curious, as the usual protocol is 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks, and they are not fully covered until two weeks after the final vacc.

Where did you get the pups from?

I ve never heard of a vet giving 2 vaccinations by the time a pup is 8 weeks either.

I think you need to check there vaccination certificates to see what they have actually been vaccinated for.

And vaccinations need approximately a fortnight to kick in so they should still not be going anywhere unless carried.

Bomber, did you get these pups from registered breeders? I note you have mentioned they came from 2 different litters so I'm presuming they didn't come from the same breeder.

I find it very strange indeed to hear that two breeders would vaccinate a pup twice within a couple of weeks. Would you mind posting the details of exactly what they were vaccinated against, please.

bomber..8 weeks is very young to be walking out&about..especially for a little dog breed.

To get her more confident..do lots of short sessions in the yard, with leash and collar..training her to walk at heel, and to 'sit'..make it just a few minutes, and end on a fun note :)

Then, when she is old enough and strong enough to walk 'outside' she will already be comfy with the leash...

This thread is interesting to me as I am getting my 8 week puppy this weekend. I had my last puppy about 9 years ago and we were in England. Either times have changed or things are just different over here because I don't remember having to wait so long before taking my last pup out. Do you really have to keep them in until they're 18 weeks? Sorry to sound so ill informed :) , but do friends who have dogs need to stay away also? I guess what I'm aiming at is an understanding of how parvo etc are spread so that I can do the right thing by my puppy but still socialise him if possible.

My apologies. The breeder who sold them to me told me they were eight weeks old. I just checked their health certificate and it turns out that they are 12 weeks old. Not sure why she would tell me that they are 8 weeks old. :)

:) senior moment?

nah..I would still recommend doing the cbasics in your yard at first, until she is very happy to walk around with the lead and collar on.

Then go a few houses up and back... then increase to a block...etc.

Have fun!

You seem to be changing the story a bit here. Was this a registered breeder? If so, what do their pedigrees say about date of birth?

Bomber in regards to her not wanting to walk.

She is a baby and has worked out that if she stops moving she doesnt have to walk.

Try having a treat and urging her forward with it.

My jack Mitchi had no probs. SHe wanted to explore, mind you before we went for her first walk i had taken her so many places adn carried her so she was safer from bugs,

Also she may be unsure about the lead.

Was it the first time you put it on her?

If so i would out it on her whilst youare watching her and let her wander aroudn with it on for a few minutes - about to about 15 so she gets used to it.

Then take her walking in your yard so she gets more used to it.

After she is doing that happily then graduate outside.

Good luck. Would love to see pics!

I'm getting a bit confused too. These pups are from different litters you said in an earlier post, but I gather they are from the same breeder so this breeder had two litters at the same time?

Did you get these pups from a registered breeder. If so your paperwork should tell you their date of birth. There is also a very noticeable developmental difference between and 8 week old and a 12 week old pup.
