RubyStar Posted March 2, 2011 Share Posted March 2, 2011 The owner asked how much I had paid for my puppy and when I said $1100, she said that's why they went to a BYB to get their puppy. I'm surprised their pup was "cheaper", BYB's usually charge as much as registered ones! And the main reason they go for a BYB is cos they can get one now and don't get screened. Each to their own, eh? That is most of the dog owning population! At our local park, where there are sometimes up to 20 dogs there at any one time, I could count on one hand who bought their dogs from registered breeders. It's quite sad and I don't see it changing any time soon. I'm really proud of my sister. She is after a puppy. We viewed some pups the other week and after deciding that this litter wasn't for her, I thought she'd either get one of the pups anyway just so she doesn't have to wait or give up because it's all too hard. But my views on buying from registered breeders (or getting a rescue) must be taken notice of, because she is now on the list for a pup hopefully to be born towards the end of the year She decided waiting for a pup from a registered breeder she felt comfortable with was the better option to get a dog that will fit in with her family This coming from a family who usually try to get me going by saying they're all going to get a dog from the pet shop Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

LOLHow old should a puppy be before you taking him to training class? Yep, a tad far for you Between 8 and 12 weeks is the most critical socialation period so I would recommend to get booked in for one as soon as know when you are getting a puppy. I went to 2 classes, we started one of them the same day I picked my puppy up! The breeders weren't altogether happy about that because it was at our local vets (and they were concerend about the puppy picking something up) however I was happy with the risk factor, knowing the socialisation is so important. RubyStar Posted March 2, 2011 Share Posted March 2, 2011 I am still in 2 minds about a pup, I want one but I want it to sleep through the night and be fully toilet trained before it comes home I have to remember that the new one should not be as bad as Mason, because he was allergic to his food he got up like 6x a night for the toilet. ...... Yes that was quite weird him getting up so many times! If only you knew about the allergies then! Ruby slept through the night after a few nights home. I kept getting up to her and waking her up to take her out for the first week she was home, but by the second week I didn't bother and no accidents She was pretty easy to toilet train, the crate is a wonderful thing Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I took Ruby to puppy preschool at the vets 2 days after she came home, and she was the shyest one of the lot Seriously!!!! But by week 2 she came out of her shell I won't do puppy preschool for my next dog, but I will be taking it places as soon as I can for lots of socialisation. I only did it for Ruby as she had no other dogs (besides little old maltese Chloe) to socialise with, and I was extra paranoid about socialisation because Chloe got none as a youngster outside the home so she used to just bark at people and other dogs (now she's too blind to see anyone to bark at She always hated men, too, and would bark extra long at them!!) Ruby can stay damp for hours even after many towel rub downs and taking a hair dryer to her. Millie dries in no time. My next dog will possibly be coated so it won't go to waste if I splurge one day! But I rarely bath the dogs anyway i have a Dryer for Misha but i also do sunnie after has had a wash and he dries in a matter of minutes with the dryer its soo handy!! I think new boy will be waiting until he has had his vacs to go to NS puppy school like I did with Mason, and Mason had no issues with waiting - he is very social and he was NEVER shy !!! It is 5 weeks. And I think you should make the trek! It took me 30 minutes each way, but if you got on the Highways, you could do it in 45 minutes I reckon. Especially because it's non peak hour on weekends. Seriously, she is worth the trip. And I would still recommend puppy classes to anyone even if you have another dog (I had one already obviously) but there's different tips and bits and pieces of info you pick up, plus it is hard to find public places that would be safe for an unvaccinated puppy to be socialised. Definitely will be food Although I think on Saturday and Sunday we might do the fast food run Names... my son (who is 11) has decided that "Spike" should be the name of our new pup. And I would still recommend puppy classes to anyone even if you have another dog (I had one already obviously) but there's different tips and bits and pieces of info you pick up, plus it is hard to find public places that would be safe for an unvaccinated puppy to be socialised. I just find I get a bit irritated with some of the advice thrown out there at these things, so would rather avoid it I had to shut my mouth and bite my tongue many times because so much I already knew, or as was the case at the vet classes, I disagreed with so much! However, I kept going because it was good socialisation for the puppy and that was my main priority at the time. I could have read a book for the info part, but the puppy doesn't gain much from that. We have finally organised to have a holiday after all the hard work building new house and are looking at hiring a camper trailer and spending 10 days down south west WA in May. Has anyone got some recommendations for pet friendly camping and places to explore?
