Hi Vesper12!

Another question - how do you know if you are too soft to have a black russian? Or tell if someone else is.

Thanks,

ChristineX

Hello ChristineX

If you allow your dog to manipulate you, and you do not understand the consequences of this - BRT is not the best breed for you. As the leader, it falls to you to set the rules, boundaries, and limitations for life inside and outside the house. If you can not enforce your dog to follow this rules boundaries and limitations the BRT is not the best choice.

If you are not 100% sure that you are strong enough you can get female.

Thanks for those. If I may say, they look so much better without the long tail.

Yes I agree with you, that is why BRTs with long tail are not very popular in Russia. Usually breeders leave the tail for very promising pups, and they can get more titels in Europe

This is a link to one of Russian kennels, there is an article about BRT's Grooming on English.

No I do not show my dogs in Australia, not yet, because my dogs are still in Russia. I do not have a profile on dogzonline, but I hope you will have a chance to see them when I bring them into Australia.

Yes all dogs on photos are Russian dogs, except the first photo of male with tail- this is Ukranian dog.

My dogs prefix - iz Russkoi Dinastii

All photos I have not so good to show them, because these photos are from show rings and quiet small.

Unfortunately import from Russia is so complicated and so expensive :thanks: that I am not sure when exactly I will bring them, definetely not in next year.

Guest belgian.blue

I want a BRT one day :thanks:

Can you keep them in the Australian heat without clipping their coat? I have a Groenendael with a full coat and she copes very well.

You do not have to clip BRT if you do not want to, but remember they need to be trimmed quiet often. If BRT looks like a bear this is not right, and it is extremely difficult to keep very long coat in a good condition. And take a look on a previouse page, I told there what you can do with coat during the summer. :)

I am still learning how to trim for shows, I have wonderful advice from my girls breeder, and and amazing lessons from friends and Judges here in Australia,

it makes it hard when I have only ever seen, handled or helped groom 5 BRT's in Australia, and my girl is 99% of the time the only BRT

being shown in NSW, her breeder lives in QLD, so most of my grooming tips are via emails, lol with only a couple of actually hands on lessons in 3 years :cheer:

It also doesnt help when judges have differring opinions on what they think is correct coat, some think they should be groomed like a poodle, some left with a long coat to the point of being shaggy,

I even had a judge only a month ago say when she looked at my girl for a minute when we walked in ," so whats the go with the white hairs??" its a bit of a battle, lol,

What are there energy levels like, is half hour to an hour walk a day enough? if you skip a day is that fine?

Are they constantly on the go? pacing and running around?

How are they inside? energetic or relaxed?

Do they have a doggy smell?

Are they very noisey? bark at every sound they hear?

They are not noisy, and they don't bark at every sound.

They do not have a doggy smell, if they are healthy and you take care about the coat properly. But fungus infection on the beard can cause specific smell.

So you need to keep beard clean and dry.

They are calm and relaxed dogs with medium energy level.

In my opinion 0,5 - 1 hour for walk a day is not enough. I would say 1,5-2 hours a day, plus very long walk on weekends. Do not forget, they need a work ( even to follow you on walks), if they will be bored and do not have a work, you can have serious behaviour's problems with them.

All the ones I have met including my girl live happily with other breeds

she is by no means dominant with the other dogs she is nearly 3 and until recently was the youngest dog here, and ruled over by our 6 BC's, and the two pet JRT's who rule the whole household, lol :(

as long as they are well socialised etc outside the home as well, there shouldnt be a problem.

she happily plays with friends dogs at shows she knows, aussie shepherds, newfies etc.

dont know about cats as we dont own cats. :D

and yes they can be crate trained,

my girl is only ever in her 48 inch crate at dog shows,

when at home she lives in the house with us never in a run or crate.
