One dog has an autoimmune disease which was giving her an ongoing dry cracked nose and vet said to increase oils in her diet.I did aslo give her flaxseed oil as well at the same time but have since swapped to vit e and has done the trick.Other dog has a bit of arthritis as well as fish oil being good for thier coats Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Pugmum Posted February 24, 2010 Share Posted February 24, 2010 I found some conflcting and confusing info when looking at fish oil for my pugs - eventually got the doggy specialist at the referral centre here in Adelaide to give me the correct dose. 1000 mg per 10kg dog weight (per day) for general wellbeing - up to double that per day for a dog with heart problems. He told me I could give my 9 kg pug between 1000mg and 2000mg per day safely. I dont know what too much would be, but you are certainly not over dosing your dog at the level you are giving them now. You'll notice it in soft stools if you're giving too much, you usually need to work up to the full dossage. You must give Vit E if you're giving Fish Oil, you can get some Fish Oil Capsuals with Vit E in them. Most of the resources I have found regarding Omega 3 and 6 say the same thing - that most pet food contains enough Omega 6 but not enough Omega 3. Jake is on a raw diet. Would that have enough Omega 6? One site said that if dogs don't have enough Omega 6 they can have dry skin, and I don't want that to happen. The label says one capsule per ten kilograms of body mass per day. Is the liquid in the Ethical Nutrients capsules the same strength as the concentrated oil? Most dogs love them on their own. My dogs are enthusiastic about "fish lollies" as they are about any other treat. Then again... they are labradors. Fox (20 kgs) has one a day to keep his skin soft and dandruff free (before F.O., he had heaps of dandruff). Link (18 kgs) has two a day to help with his dry skin and coarse hair, but will drop down to one per day when I'm happy with his coat. All my dog's LOVE their caps and eat them like lollies! cazxxz; grass-fed raw meat provides ample amounts of Omega 3, 6 and 9. You only really need to supplement with Omega 3 (FO) if you feed a lot of chicken or grain-fed animals or want to provide extra for a health condition. I've heard you can't really overdose on Fish Oil - the body just ships out what it doesn't use, so the dog'll get oily droppings if you feed to much.
